Underdog [Blu-ray Disc]
To save the day, here comes Underdog, a 1970s Saturday morning cartoon transformed to glorious, semi-CGI animated life; it's a talking animal live-action film--à la BABE--with wisecracks aplenty. Voiced by Jason Lee, Underdog is the joke of the K-9 police force after his weakness for ham disrupts a public ceremony. Dejectedly, he lets himself get abducted for an animal experiment by a mad scientist, Dr. Simon Barsinister (Peter Dinklage). He escapes, doused in experimental chemicals, to become a dog with 80 times his normal strength. Jim Belushi embodies the sad-sack security guard at the laboratory who finds Underdog and takes him home as a playmate for his alienated tweener son (Alex Neuberger). The fact that chaos follows will come as no surprise, but what may is the genial tone the film maintains throughout. UNDERDOG blends its CGI animation and live action with finesse, and with performances that are breezy and in-on-the-same-joke. Lots of the humor in Underdog plays off the fact that he needs to curb his baser habits, since he's the type to dig bones deep into the earth, fly through walls, and shatter glass with his bark. Dinklage plays the evil scientist with a welcome restraint and Malkovich-ian archness; his evil assistant (Patrick Warburton) makes good use of a thesaurus for his evil declarations. Taylor Momsen plays the neighborhood tweener damsel in distress, who happens to have a cute girl dog, voiced by Amy Adams.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (Sensormatic) [DVD]
Angelina Jolie stars as Lara Croft, a tough, sexy, heavily armed adventurer, in this action film based on the wildly popular video game series of the same name. As Lara's quest becomes increasingly dangerous, it begins to shed light on the life of her deceased father, Lord Croft (Jon Voight, Jolie's real-life father), and a secretive group known as the Illuminati. Director Simon West's film boasts an energetic techno soundtrack and a charming performance by Jolie, who blasts her way past various monsters, villains, and pitfalls, smirking all the while. (In one of the film's most memorable sequences, she battles dozens of deadly assassins while suspended from a bungee cord in her pajamas.) Perfectly cast as the voluptuous heroine (and sporting a fine British accent), Jolie's commanding presence carries this fast-paced blockbuster, which will appeal to hardcore video game junkies and action movie fans alike.

Crank: High Voltage (Digital Copy Included) [DVD]
Committed to delivering A.D.D. movies for the music-video and video-gaming generation, directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor turn the action and antics levels up to "11" in CRANK: HIGH VOLTAGE. The film picks up where its cult-hit predecessor left off, with hunky hit man Chev Chelios (Jason Statham) falling to his death on the streets of L.A. But fate and Chelios?s vengeful enemies have other plans, implanting him with an artificial heart while preparing him for more extensive organ harvesting. When Chelios?s escape reduces this temporary ticker to internal battery power, the quest for his own heart must be sustained by any electrical charge available. This includes everything from dog shock-collars to high-voltage transformers to a very public display of electron transferral with ex-girlfriend Eve (Amy Smart). Aided by good friend Doc Miles (Dwight Yoakam) and the Tourette's-suffering Venus (Efren Ramirez), Chelios cuts a frenzied path of destruction on his way to a final shoot-'em-up showdown with the Ferret (Clifton Collins Jr.). Will it be in time to restore the aggrieved assassin?s heart, or will Chev Chelios find that his tankful of tenacity is finally on empty? An adrenaline-fueled rush from start to finish, the film revels in its whiplash violence and vulgarity without ever taking itself too seriously. And with Statham further bolstering his dashing-while-deadly bona fides, CRANK: HIGH VOLTAGE is action-packed, Colisseum-pleasing entertainment in its purest form.
