Flashdance ("I Love the 80s" Edition; CD Included; Sensormatic) [DVD]
In Adrian Lyne's FLASHDANCE, a young woman, Alex (Jennifer Beals), strives to achieve success as a classical dancer, but economic forces require her to work as a welder by day and an exotic dancer by night. Standing in her way is an abundance of profound social obstacles, not the least of which is her boss at the welding factory, Nick (Michael Nouri), who is also her boyfriend. Alex strives to be accepted into a prestigious ballet academy, and she is furious when she realizes that her boyfriend might be pulling strings for her behind the scenes. Along the road to self-discovery and independence, Alex also struggles to accept love, come to terms with her own stubbornness, and find the inner strength to turn her lofty dreams into reality. Edited for maximum rhythmic impact, FLASHDANCE is full of glistening bodies and metallic surfaces, powered by Giorgio Moroder's throbbing music and one hit song after another: Michael Sembello's "Maniac," Karen Karmen's "Manhunt," and, notably, Irene Cara's Oscar-winning theme song, "Flashdance...What a Feeling." FLASHDANCE marks the first coproduction between Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson, who geared the film toward the MTV generation.
Unfaithful (Full Frame) [DVD]
Connie Sumner (Diane Lane) travels to New York City from the suburban home she shares with her husband Edward (Richard Gere) and young son Charlie (Erik Per Sullivan). It is a very windy day and, caught by a particularly savage gust, Connie falls and bumps into bookseller Paul Martel (Olivier Martinez) in the process. She scrapes her knees, and Paul invites her into his apartment. She stays only briefly, leaving after attending to her knees. She passes the accident off as trivial to Edward. But, she is drawn to the younger man and soon returns to his apartment with eventually disastrous results. UNFAITHFUL is based on Claude Chabrol's classic LA FEMME INFIDELE (1969). The drama has been shifted from Paris to New York City by scriptwriters Alvin Sargent and William Broyles Jr. Beautifully lit by director of photography Peter Biziou, UNFAITHFUL is staged with rare subtlety by director Adrian Lyne. Diane Lane gives an extraordinarily fine performance, viscerally conveying how torn Connie is between her attraction for Paul and her love for Edward and Charlie. There is excellent support from Gere, Martinez, Sullivan and Zeljko Ivanek. UNFAITHFUL is the rare case of a remake that measures up to, and maybe even surpasses, the original.

Jacob's Ladder (Special Edition) [DVD]
Adrian Lyne's JACOB'S LADDER moves in time and space between Vietnam and New York with hallucinatory force. Something bad happened on the Mekong Delta, on October 6, 1971, and it is still affecting war veteran Jacob (Tim Robbins) in Brooklyn as he attempts to live a normal life with coworker and girlfriend Jezzie (Elizabeth Peña). Louis (Danny Aiello), an understanding chiropractor, tries to help him cope with his nightmarish visions--some of which occur at night, while others intrude into his daily life. When Jacob gets a call from Paul (Pruitt Taylor Vince), who was with him in Vietnam, it seems that Jacob is not alone in his visions. The film offers impressive and compelling performances by Peña, Aiello (no ordinary chiropractor), and Ving Rhames and Eriq La Salle (the latter of ER) as Jacob's comrades from Vietnam. Macaulay Culkin appears uncredited as Jacob's young son, Gabe. Director Lyne also guides an unerring interpretation of Bruce Joel Rubin's screenplay in Robbins's powerfully restless, searingly searching performance as Jacob; brilliant editing additionally rounds out this engrossing, disturbing film. JACOB'S LADDER is a jolting experience that is not easily forgotten.

Foxes [DVD]
FOXES, director Adrian Lyne's first feature, is set in Los Angeles. It centers on Jeanie (Jodie Foster) and her teenage friends Annie (Cherie Currie), Madge (Marilyn Kagan), and Dierdre (Kandice Stroh), who spend more time with each other--often sleeping in Jeanie's bedroom--than they do with their families. They young women represent a spectrum of teen behavior: the outgoing Dierdre is flirtatious; the overweight Madge, shy; and Jeanie, as the mature caretaker of the group, is quite concerned about Annie, whose negative relationship with her policeman father tempts her to self-destructive acts. Madge falls for the wealthy Jay (Randy Quaid), and when he leaves town for a few days the four take over his place. They hold a party, but things get out of hand--Annie ends up in the hospital, and Jay is furious. When Annie escapes from the hospital, Jeanie sets out to find her. In FOXES Lyne and scriptwriter Gerald Ayers explore the lives of the girls, their relationships with their parents, and how they deal with boys, sex, and drugs. The movie is backed by Giorgio Moroder's score and features strong performances, especially by Foster, Currie, Sally Kellerman as Jeanie's mother, and Scott Baio as Annie's friend.

Black Rain/ Fatal Attraction [DVD]
BLACK RAIN: Director Ridley Scott's international crime thriller stars Michael Douglas as Mike Conklin, a New York detective under investigation for corruption. When yakuza hit man Sato kills two American mobsters in New York, he's extradited to Osaka to face trial, with Conklin and Charlie Vincent (Andy Garcia) as his escorts. Mistakenly turning over their prisoner to yakuza disguised as police, Conklin and Vincent realize, after running down some blind alleys, that they have no chance of finding Sato in the unfamiliar city and enlist the services of Japanese desk cop Masahiro "Mas" Masumoto (Ken Takakura). As they continue the search for Sato, the scrupulous, methodical, and civilized style of Japanese police work rubs the improvisational, rule-breaking Americans the wrong way. But when Vincent is murdered, Mas and Conklin realize that success will come only through a blending of investigative and cultural styles.
