King of the Delta Blues Singers Vol. 2 [Remaster] by Robert Johnson (Mississippi) (CD - 08/10/2004)
Description:
"King of the Delta Blues Singers Vol. 2 [Remaster]" (08/10/2004) Blues Johnson, Robert (Mississippi), Legacy RecordingsContains 1 bonus track. Personnel: Robert Johnson (acoustic guitar, slide guitar). Liner Note Author: Pete Welding. Recording information: San Antonio, Texas (11/23/1936 - 06/20/1937). Along with its predecessor, this companion to KING OF THE DELTA BLUES SINGERS accounts for most of Robert Johnson's small but staggeringly influential output. Recorded in Texas hotel rooms during a handful of 1936 and 1937 sessions, these cuts capture Johnson's brilliant guitar work (its churning bass line, rhythmic invention, and melodic embellishments still sound fresh), his textured, keening tenor voice, and--most importantly--the subtle, complex interplay between the two. But what makes Johnson's music immortal is that he always exceeded the sum of his technical expertise (which is considerable). With their incisive poetic vision and their themes of longing, displacement, and suffering, Johnson's songs tap into a wellspring of universal emotion. Though capable of expressing sheer exuberance ("They're Red Hot"), Johnson at his best ("Love in Vain;" "Ramblin' on My Mind") told the story of the human soul seeking purchase. As an album, VOL. 2 may have the edge on VOL. 1, but all of Johnson's work is essential because it mirrors life at its most intense. His music still has the power to mystify, dazzle, and enrich the listener's life beyond measure.

Father of the Delta Blues: The Complete 1965 Recordings by Son House (CD - 06/30/1992)
"Father of the Delta Blues: The Complete 1965 Recordings" (06/30/1992) Blues House, Son, Legacy RecordingsContains 9 tracks previously released on Columbia as THE LEGENDARY SON HOUSE: FATHER OF FOLK BLUES and 12 previously unreleased and/or alternate takes from the same session. The set also includes liner notes in which Son House relates a story about Robert Johnson. By the time his name was spreading through the collegiate blues circles of the early '60s, Eddie James "Son" House, Jr. had been retired for nearly 20 years. Son House was already legendary for a small collection of live field recordings made by folklorist Alan Lomax in 1941 and 1942-and for having taught some important licks to both Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters. Tracked down by his new fans in 1964, Son House regained his chops and went out on the college blues circuit for several years, showing worshipful youngsters just why he deserved the title "Father of the Delta Blues." In 1965, Son House recorded the 21 tracks featured on FATHER OF THE DELTA BLUES for Columbia Records. Whereas the nine songs on disc one were released that year as THE LEGENDARY SON HOUSE, the 12 alternate takes and previously unissued songs on disc two, including an elegy called "President Kennedy," remained unheard until this 1992 release.

King Of The Delta Blues [10/18] *
"King of the Delta Blues" (10/18/2005) Blues House, Son, Fuel 2000 RecordsPersonnel: Son House (vocals, guitar). The title King Of The Delta Blues is usually reserved for Robert Johnson, generally considered to be one of the 20th century's most influential blues performers. But the musician who was Johnson's biggest influence (and who ended up outliving him by five decades) was the extraordinary singer and guitarist Son House. Made in 1942 by famed folklorist Alan Lomax for the Library of Congress, these sides were House's first recordings since releasing four songs for Paramount in 1930. In a set of astonishing power, he is often accompanied by mandolin, harmonica, and second guitar, plus various atmospheric background noises like the sound of a train whistle (the field transcriptions were made on a portable recording device in rural Mississippi). But it's the later tracks featuring the master musician performing solo, like "Depot Blues" and "The Pony Blues," that best capture his remarkable authority and charisma, displaying a youthful vitality absent from his next recording (and first full-length album), FATHER OF THE DELTA BLUES, made some two decades later.

The Original Delta Blues by Son House (CD - 06/30/1998)
"The Original Delta Blues" (06/30/1998) Blues House, Son, Legacy RecordingsAll tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of Legacy's Mojo Workin' series. Eddie James "Son" House, Jr. was originally legendary in blues circles for a small collection of live field recordings made by folklorist Alan Lomax in 1941 and 1942--and for having taught some important licks to both Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters. But much of his present blues immortality rests on 21 tracks recorded in 1965, after his "rediscovery" on the college blues circuit. Son House showed worshipful youngsters how his modal acoustic blues and stabbing style of bottleneck slide guitar, heard to best advantage on tracks like the chilling "Death Letter," earned him the title "Father of the Delta Blues." The first nine tracks on THE ORIGINAL DELTA BLUES were issued in 1965 as THE LEGENDARY SON HOUSE, which has been repackaged endlessly under various titles. The remaining two inclusions are outtakes from those sessions that previously appeared on the 1992's FATHER OF THE DELTA BLUES compilation.
Founder of the Delta Blues: 1929-1934 by Charley Patton (CD - 03/28/1995)
"Founder of the Delta Blues: 1929-1934" (03/28/1995) Blues Patton, Charley, YazooCompilation producers: Richard Nevins, Don Kent Recorded between 1929 and 1934. Includes liner notes by Stephen Calt. Digitally remastered by Robert Vosgien (1995). For starters, Yazoo's Charlie Patton compilation FOUNDER OF THE DELTA BLUES is of great historical import. It provides a document of the man that influenced--whether directly or indirectly--every blues musician who followed him, including Son House, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, and Howlin' Wolf. Beyond that, however, the music is purely brilliant. Patton played with an intensity, rhythmic sophistication, and fierce exuberance that burns across the years through the crackle of these 78s. FOUNDER collects some of Patton's best performances, representing the full range of his repertoire, which included rags, gospel songs, ballads, and traditional blues. Featured here are "Pony Blues," "Mississippi Bo Weavil Blues," and "A Spoonful Blues," among others. In addition to Patton's gravelly, soulful singing, his guitar playing--with its spit-fire slides, chattering high/low interplay, popped and thumped bass strings, and insistent primal pulse--writes the blues guitar textbook. Dynamic, thrilling, heartbreaking, and as fresh now as when it was recorded, Patton's music will sear its way into the heart and mind of anyone fortunate enough to hear it. FOUNDER is, quite simply, one of the most important blues records in existence.
