Kid
Charlie Chaplin's first feature is a sad comedy about a woman who abandons her child with the intention of commiting suicide. The little Tramp finds the baby and takes him under his wing. When the woman, Edna, turns out to be an opera star five years later, she spends her extra time doing charity work for youngsters who live in the slums, hoping that she will find her son. Eventually, the truth comes out and the authorities take the baby away from Chaplin. He steals the child back, but is soon discovered and separated once again from him. A reunion at the mother's mansion resolves things happily, yet the earlier somber tone prevails, making this sweet and heartwarming story resonate for the viewer.
Monsieur Verdoux [DVD]

Limelight
Silet film legend Charlie Chaplin plays an aging music-hall comedian who befriends a young dancer (Claire Bloom) who has attempted suicide. Highlights include a famous Chaplin-Buster Keaton comedy skit as the two comedians portray faded stars seeking an audience in a changing world. This bittersweet film wasn't released in America until 1972.

Circus

Modern Times
Charlie Chaplin bid farewell to silent comedy with this funny and poignant masterpiece. Here Chaplin stars as a factory worker fed-up with the job and his tyrannical boss (who keeps an eye on all his employees via a big-brother TV monitor). When he meets and falls in love with an orphaned street waif, the two dream of a nice suburban existence...but the cops are never far behind, chasing the vagabond couple.
Great Dictator
Charlie Chaplin has a dual role in this film, his first with dialogue. He plays a sweet-natured Jewish barber and a murderous Hitler-type dictator with such satirical impact that it counterbalanced the oratory of Adolf Hitler. Particularly delectable comic scenes are Hynkel's balletic "pas de deux" with a globe, and a cream cake fight between Hynkel and Napoloni, the dictator of Bacteria.
Gold Rush
This Chaplin classic finds Charlie in the Klondike searching for gold. Maintains a careful balance of masterful slapstick, romantic tenderness, and wry social satire. Also contains the celebrated "dancing dinner rolls" gag. Re-release in 1942 featured sound narration. Academy Award Nominations: 2, Best Sound Recording, Best Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture.
