This is an excellent router. I have owned it since it first was released. One nice thing is that the firmware is upgradeable, so it's internal software is always up to date. The internal web server makes it easy to configure.

The units come out of the box with a 1.0.11 firmware.
This firmware has bugs that cause the unit to hang, the dual-WAN feature to not work, and the admin interface can hang.
If you update to the latest firmware rev (1.1.5 as of July 1 2004) all the hangs go away but you will find that the firewall does not work.
You can see/configure the firewall rules, but the rules are ignored and all ports, from all IP addresses are allowed in.
Linksys is aware of the problem and will not let us send in the units for repair or to have them replaced. We are stuck with units that cannot use the firewall features, and they are subsequently of no use to us without a security layer.
We have spent 5 weeks with our 3 units and still cannot find a firware rev that allows us to avoid the hangs and lockups while still having firewall functionality.

I spent 2 days on the phone with Linksys trying to make this thing work. It just does not.
The router/switch/firewall features work fine. When it comes to VPN... forget it. It is NOT compatible with any respectable IPSec VPN client.
Authentication options are not suited for mobile users with Dynamic IPs (you can not specify to connect from just any IP address) and their own VPN client (QuickVPN) is incompatible with Nortel and Cisco VPN clients (they can not be installed on the same computer) so if you are using these software to connect to other VPNs bye bye. The setup is involved to get all the Ts crossed and Is doted, but it is well worth it. The instruction book is one of the best I have seen and if followed exactly step by step it works. My ROUTER is hooked to 3 computers and the internet. It has alsotaken a load off of each computers firewall utility with less intrussions or hits of suspicious sites . The LED indicaters are also handy showing the state of your network. After NETWORK is up and running the only problem I have ever had is caused duringmy system power up sequence . JUST PUSH THE ROUTERSRESET BUTTON AND ALL IS WELL.

Let my start by saying that I am no Linksys fan. I have had problems in the past with Linksys, and I feel stupid to have bought this router. I should have known better.
I did a lot of research before buying this router. I was looking for something that could handle a lot of concurrent sessions, and has QOS traffic shaping. I discovered that finding the NAT table size was incredibly difficult for any router under $300. This router has a 266 Mhz Intel processor, and 32MB or RAM. I was quite impressed. I was nervous to buy a Linksys because 5 years ago I had 2 Linksys routers quit on me within an 8 month period. Linksys customer support was so horrorable, and getting these things replaced under warranty was not worth the trouble. I was hoping that since Cisco bought Linksys, I thought that maybe now Linksys makes a better product. I was telling a friend of mine this today, and he said “What would make you think that? Cisco never made a good product either!” I have worked... ( See all reviews)

Featured Review by Online Shopper:
I've done some research into various brands and models for a firewall enabled router and have heard nothing but woes from other reviews with people dealing with Linksys. Netgear I ended up choosing in part due to a great rebate offer and the features. Asit turns out it installed so easily without any problems and tested fine through two different remote security sites as invisible. The only shortcoming was the hardware is vulnerable to personal data extraction but the so-called 200 software firewall it comes with deals with that. One should look to still include a software firewall in addition to a hardware one to deal with outgoing issues such as spyware or personal security issues. I highly recommend this router!
