The optional slide-in module provides full SNMP support, as well as a number of advanced automated capabilities aimed to make your life easier. In addition to full SNMP support, the management module delivers remote monitoring, analysis, thresholding, and self-healing action-on-event capabilities through its Smartagent embedded software agents and full nine-group RMON support. Remote Monitoring (RMON), a superset of SNMP MIB II, and TranscendWare SmartAgent software combine forces to reduce the processing burden on your management station, minimize traffic, and save time by automatically monitoring and analyzing your network. RMON tells you at a glance how the network is performing and who is using it, while TranscendWare SmartAgent software provides RMON's benefits without the associated processing and memory costs. The hub's management module provides full RMON support, including LAN statistics, time-based statistics for trend analysis (History), threshold alarms, statistics by MAC address (hosts), ranked statistics by MAC address (HostTopN), source-destination traffic analysis (matrix traffic), events reporting, packet selection (filter), and packet capture against filter (packet capture). 3Com's graphical Transcend network management applications for Windows and UNIX support the managed hub. Web-based management software is provided free with the management module. It allows easy graphical configuration and direct access to management information from anywhere on the network with a few clicks of a Web browser. Additionally, the Dual Speed Hub 500 supports Telnet interface for easy hub and port configuration, system information access, ping and TFTP agent upgrade. The 'smart' auto-sensing 10/100 feature (available by the middle of 1998) enabled by the management module enhances the standard auto-sensing feature by recognizing not only the cable speed (10 or 100 Mbps), but also the cable quality (incorrectly/correctly installed Cat 3, 4 or 5 cable) and maximizes the throughput. When enabled by the user, the hub will automatically verify the quality of the connection at each port, and set the port at the maximum speed that can be reliably achieved for that specific cable installation. For example, a 10/100 NIC-equipped PC connected by Category 3 cabling (rather than the standard Category 5 required by Fast Ethernet rules) would not normally be allowed to run with Fast Ethernet hubs or 10/100 hubs. Smart auto-sensing allows this PC, in certain situations, to reliably transmit data at 100 Mbps, achieving a 10 times increased throughput! On the other hand, when linked over a seriously substandard Category 5 cable, the installed 10/100 NIC-equipped PC would normally try to run at 100 Mbps, causing errors and connection slowdown. Smart auto-sensing automatically sets this link at 10 Mbps, once again maximizing the real throughput, and advising the network manager to check the connection. Once enabled by the user, smart auto-sensing allows you to forget about the cable category issues because the hub determines the optimal setting. 3Com's patented LAN Security Architecture (LSA) comes standard with the hub's management module delivering advanced security features to protect your valuable network resources. Features such as Need To Know (NTK) protects sensitive data on the network by preventing passive listening to sensitive information, and Disconnect Unauthorized Device (DUD) automatically detects and/or disables unauthorized devices and then notifies the network management station. The Cisco 2500 series routers provide a variety of models designed for branch office and remote site environments. These routers are typically fixed configuration with at least two of the following interfaces: Ethernet (AUI), 10BaseT Ethernet hub, Token Ring, Synchronous serial, Asynchronous serial, ISDN BRI.Cisco 2500 routers come with Flash EPROM technology for simplified software maintenance. These systems support a variety of Cisco IOS software feature sets, so you can choose a feature set that supports your specific protocol environment. The software feature sets range from an IP and bridging-only to the full array of Cisco's software functionality, including APPN and RMON. Mission-specific models contain less memory and less hardware functionality to support a subset of protocols. Each mission-specific model can be upgraded to full router capability by downloading a new Cisco IOS software feature set and, if necessary, adding memory. (More)
