"Fantasize *" (09/11/2001) Cajun Bone, Ponty, Loudhouse RecordsPersonnel includes: Ponty Bone, Spencer Jarmon, Wash Hamilton, Justin Hess, Mike Gersmann, Booka Michel, Traci Lamar, Connie Hancock, Charlene Hancock, Ed Vizard. Personnel: Ponty Bone (vocals, accordion); Spencer Jarmon (vocals, electric guitar); Andrew Halbreich (Hawaiian steel guitar); J.J. Barrera (bajo sexto); Ed Vizard (saxophone); Smokey Joe Miller (baritone saxophone); David Hernandez (trumpet); R.C. Banks (piano, organ); Julie Gardner (keyboards); Tony Murillo, Mike Gersmann (drums); Booka Michel (percussion); Traci Lamar, Connie Hancock (background vocals). Audio Mixer: Ponty Bone. Recording information: Eugene Brown's Studio, Austin, TX; Flashpoint Studio; Parrot Tracks Studio. Arranger: Ponty Bone. A master of melding genres ranging from Texas blues to Cajun to soul to Tejano, it takes little time for Ponty Bone to get into his realm on the infectious "Baby U Got It (Spin the Top)." Mixing accordion with saxophone, the song instantly hits a nerve with the listener. With a large ensemble supporting each song, the album maintains a level of cohesiveness, although a few songs break little new sonic ground, particularly "Ain't Got No Sweet Thing." There's also a hint of old rock & roll in the delivery on "Me, Myself & I," resembling Fats Domino in his heyday. What is especially intriguing is how two of the three instrumentals should be the catalyst for a more upbeat feeling bordering on rowdiness. But with the exception of "Clifton's Boogie," most tend to stagger along at a very leisurely pace. A reggae beat is also added in the title track, having the desired effect and a perfect spot in the song order. On the album's liner notes, Flaco Jimenez describes the music as "soul accordion," which seems a very fitting description. Although lacking a bit of jump, the album still jives. ~ Jason MacNeil

Photographers: Joanne Savio; Paul Harris . Hip-O's 2000 retrospective The Ultimate Collection may fall short of the promise of the title, but it comes damn close, offering 19 tracks of prime Buckwheat Zydeco from the late '70s, '80s, and '90s. Sure, there are some great tracks missing, and it could be argued the label-specific compilations give a more focused listening experience, but this is the best-available overview of his entire career and nearly as good an overview as could be hoped for. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"The Best of Clifton Chenier" (07/22/2003) Cajun Chenier, Clifton, ArhooliePersonnel: Clifton Chenier (vocals, accordion); Paul Senagal (guitar); John Hart (tenor saxophone); Elmore Nixon (piano); Joe Brouchet (bass); Robert Peter (drums). Recorded between 1964 & 1983. Includes liner notes by Chris Strachwitz. Personnel: Clifton Chenier (vocals, accordion); Elmore Nixon (vocals, piano); Bob Murphy (vocals, drums); Elvin Bishop, Antoine Victor, Felix Benit, Paul Senegal, Sherman Robertson, Cleveland Keyes, Ray Monette (guitar); Morris Chenier (fiddle); John Hart (saxophone, tenor saxophone); C.J. Chenier (alto saxophone); Warren Ceaser (trumpet); Stephen Miller (piano); St. Judy (drums); Cleveland Chenier (rub-board). Liner Note Author: Chris Strachwitz. Recording information: Bill Quinn's Gold Star Studios, Houston, TX (02/08/1964-??/??/1983); Grant Street In Lafayette, LA (02/08/1964-??/??/1983); Houston, TX (02/08/1964-??/??/1983); KPFA, Berkeley, CA (02/08/1964-??/??/1983); Long Beach Blues Festival, Long Beach, CA (02/08/1964-??/??/1983); St. Mark's Hall, Richmond, CA (02/08/1964-??/??/1983); Studio In The Country, Bogalusa, LA (02/08/1964-??/??/1983); Wally Heider Studios, San Francisco, CA (02/08/1964-??/??/1983). Editor: Chris Strachwitz. The origins of zydeco are traceable to one man: Clifton Chenier, who started blending Cajun music with blues and R&B back in the '50s. He recorded for the Arhoolie label over a nearly 30-year span, and The Best of Clifton Chenier is (yet another) collection of his music culled from his Arhoolie sides. People familiar with the sound of contemporary zydeco may be surprised at how prevalent the blues influences are on some of these tunes. Tracks like "Brown Skin Woman," "It's Hard," and "Why Did You Go Last Night" are quite bluesy, while "Ay, Ai, Ai" sounds like what is called zydeco today (and it's the oldest cut on the set). Actually, this variation in style helps with the pacing of the album, providing some stylistic relief from the homogeneous zydeco of some latter-day bands. The inclusion of a previously unissued take of "Zydeco Sont Pas Sale" and a 15-minute interview conducted by Chris Strachwitz make this release of interest to Chenier fans, but it's also a good starting point for someone new to him or someone who wants to investigate the origins of zydeco in general. ~ Sean Westergaard

"Cajun Music: The Essential Collection" (11/12/2002) Cajun Various Artists, Rounder SelectIncludes liner notes by Scott Billington. Digitally remastered using HDCD technology. This is part of Rounder Records "The Essential Collection" series. An installment of Rounder's 30th anniversary celebration, this album showcases the best of Cajun music available on the label since the beginning. This album, like its zydeco counterpart, attempts to cover all of the major aspects of Cajun music over the course of the track listings. Here, the time line stretches from the very beginnings of Cajun with a cover of Am?d? Ardoin's old work by Geno Delafose & French Rockin Boogie, up to the present day in the Bluerunners' rock-informed sound, with all points in between touched upon. The fusion of Coteau provides a nice halfway point, with a deep influence of country thrown in, and the next group featuring Michael Doucet, Beausoleil, is also featured with an even higher step of fusion, with electric guitars working their way in. Where necessary, the accordions play a stunning bit of work, and the fiddles stay in the rhythmic accompaniment section. Where necessary again, the vocals take a strong stance in front of the instrument lines. All of the greats of contemporary Cajun music are represented with a song or two, and all of the styles that have come and gone over the history of Cajun are represented by an artist or two. As far as introductions to the genre are concerned, this album is certainly a worthwhile pick. For someone already acquainted with Cajun music, the album may perhaps be better passed up in favor of single-artist albums by the artists on the compilation for further breadth. ~ Adam Greenberg

"60 Minutes with the King of Zydeco" (11/30/1993) Cajun Chenier, Clifton, ArhoolieIncludes liner notes by Chris Strachwith and Michael Goodwin. Personnel: Clifton Chenier (vocals, accordion). Liner Note Authors: Chris Strachwitz; Mike Goodwin. Recording information: Face To Face Studio, Southfield, MI; Studio A, Recording, Inc., Dearborn Heights, MI. Editor: Chris Strachwitz. Photographer: Heather Hafleigh. This album's self-explanatory title, 60 MINUTES WITH THE KING OF ZYDECO, is precisely what listeners get. In the 1950s, Clifton Chenier put together a high-octane mixture of Arcadian two-step and R&B that defined the genre with which he would always be associated, and that earned him the well-deserved "King of Zydeco" moniker. 60 MINUTES collects some of the best work Chenier put out on Arhoolie (and there has been quite a bit of it). All of it bears the hallmarks of Chenier's style, a soulful, high-energy party music that boogies as fiercely as any New Orleans R&B, yet flaunts its regional, Creole-centric hallmarks via clattering washboards, pumping accordion, and French-language singing. Since 60 MINUTES covers a large chunk of Chenier's recording career, it serves as an excellent retrospective of the zydeco legend.

"Hang It High, Hang It Low *" (03/07/2006) Cajun Nathan & the Zydeco Cha Chas, Rounder SelectNathan & the Zydeco Cha Chas: Nathan Williams (vocals, accordion, piano); Dennis Paul Williams (guitar); Nathan Williams Jr. (keyboards); Robert Leblanc (bass instrument); Herman Brown (drums); Mark Williams (rub-board). Despite the devastation caused to his native New Orleans by 2005's hurricane Katrina, award-winning accordionist Nathan Williams' musical message of good times remains undiminished. On this collection of mostly self-penned, uptempo zydeco, Williams' big-hearted voice, virtuoso accordion playing and expansive exhortations to "Think About the Good Times" are both an antidote to life's smackdowns and a reason to get down and boogie. He turns Otis Redding's "Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa (The Happy Song)" into something like a ska outing, while the title track is a crowd-pleasing romp, and songs like "Don't Worry 'Bout the Mule" and "Your Love Last as Long as Your Money" are candid slices of homespun wisdom as well as great dance material.

"Happy to Be Here" (08/26/2003) Cajun Rigney, Tom, ParhelionPersonnel includes: Tom Rigney (vocals, fiddle); Jerry Cortez (electric guitar); Caroline Dahl (piano); Pat Campbell (bass); Ian Hoffman (drums); Lloyd Meadows (rub board); Vince Littleton (percussion). Recorded at Rigomania Studios, Berkeley, California. Personnel: Jim Nunally (acoustic guitar); Danny Caron, Dennis Geyer, Jerry Cortez (electric guitar); Caroline Dahl (accordion, piano); Jimmy Sanchez, Ian Hoffman (drums); Vince Littleton (congas); Lloyd Meadows (rub-board); Steve Parks (background vocals). Audio Mixer: Tom Rigney. Photographer: Tom Rigney. Rigney is a very experienced and able fiddler; there's no doubt about that. And he loves his Louisiana music, as is evident from several of the selections here. On top of that, he has a very capable band behind him. Everything's fine on songs like "Maman Rosin" and "Co Fa," but when they step out into covers of "Boppin' the Blues" or Hank Williams' "Jambalaya," they come across as a good bar band, nothing more. To be fair, they do mix it up a bit, including material like "Annie's Reel" and "Firefly Waltz," and finishing up with a barnstorming version of the standard "Orange Blossom Special." Too often, though, this seems like less than the sum of its parts -- well-played, good material, but it never comes together and to create something greater than itself. Very likely they're better live, but this time in the studio a certain little magic is missing. Not bad, but not outstanding, either. ~ Chris Nickson

"Metamorphosis" (09/24/2002) Cajun Rigney, Tom, ParhelionPersonnel: Valerie Rose (vocals); Joe Paquin (acoustic guitar, accordian, rubboard); Nina Gerber (acoustic guitar); Danny Caron, Jerry Cortez (electic guitar); Dix Bruce (mandolin); Tom Rigney (violin); Jim Rothermel (clarinet, saxophone); Norton Buffalo (harmonica); Paul Rodgers, Ron Borelli (accordian); John R. Burr (piano, organ, keyboards); Steve Evans (bass); Jimmy Sanchez (drums); Michael Spiro (tambourine, percussion). Audio Mixer: Tom Rigney. Recording information: Rigomania Studios, Berkeley, CA. Photographer: Pat Johnson . A lot has changed since the mid-'70s when Tony Rice and David Grisman started playing new acoustic music. 25 years later, the genre has expanded to include electric instruments and a broad range of musical styles. Violinist Tom Rigney and his bandmates take advantage of this eclecticism on Metamorphosis. The opener, "New Moon," is highlighted by Latin percussion, acoustic guitars, and lovely violin work, while "Guiness and Gumbo" adds electric guitar, saxophone, and congas. An organ creates a nice atmospheric backdrop for "Mazatlan," while a clarinet inserts an Eastern European flavor into "The Hour of the Cat." These pieces, and Rigney's overall approach, is unassuming. It's also odd, in a good way, that all of these diverse instruments -- clarinets, accordions, and electric guitars -- blend so well together. One imagines that Danny Caron's electric guitar would be incongruous -- too loud -- for "The Hour of the Cat," but instead it adds an unexpected and welcome touch. Metamorphosis also works well because of Rigney's constant shifting of arrangements. Obviously individual arrangements were chosen because they worked well with a particular instrumental, but the juxtaposition of acoustic and electric arrangements keeps the music fresh. Fans of new acoustic music with a broad approach will enjoy Metamorphosis all the way to the final track. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr.
