These dozen and a half songs span the couple years on either side of Chenier's big introduction into the blues world at the 1966 Berkeley Blues Festival in California. Immediately embraced by this audience, the Bay area label Arhoolie began recording him regularly. What's reassuring is how the intense and honest power of his Texas recordings was maintained in these new environs. Working with his core band (most notably his brother Cleveland Chenier on rub-board), the were a well-seasoned unit made strong from playing endless dances throughout the Bayou region. The album's title is a succinct bit of truth in advertising--it is indeed a winning set of blues and zydeco. Besides being a wonder on the accordion, Chenier possess a voice equally at ease with bluesy balladry and boastful strutting.
Zodico Blues & Boogie by Clifton Chenier (CD - 04/15/1993)
"Zodico Blues & Boogie" (04/15/1993) Cajun Chenier, Clifton, Specialty RecordsZODICO BLUES & BOOGIE includes 12 previously unreleased alternate takes. Personnel: Clifton Chenier (vocals, accordion); Phillip Walker, Lonesome Sundown (guitar); Lionel Prevo (tenor saxophone); James K. Jones (piano); Louis Candy (bass); Wilton Siemen (drums); Cleveland Chenier (scrub board). Principally recorded at Master Recorders and Ted Brinson's Studio, Los Angeles, California between April and September 9, 1955. Includes liner notes by Ray Topping. Digitally remastered by Kirk Felton (1993, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). This set was assembled in 1992, five years after the death of Clifton Chenier, the proclaimed King of Zydeco and the man most responsible for the spread of the music's popularity. The twenty tracks date from 1955 and are some of his earliest national recordings. These were all recorded for the Los Angeles-based Specialty label, and came after previous records on regional based outfits in his Bayou homeland of Louisiana and Gulf Coast Texas. It's easy to see why there was interest in presenting him to a wider audience, as these largely blues-based songs are both invitingly friendly and irresistibly danceable. His band was well seasoned from constant road work and the recordings capture the warm and intuitive interplay. rhythmically dynamic, one of their secret weapons was the scrub board playing of Clifton's brother Cleveland.

Live! At the Long Beach and San Francisco Blues Festivals by Clifton Chenier (CD - 11/23/1993)
"Live! At the Long Beach and San Francisco Blues Festivals" (11/23/1993) Cajun Chenier, Clifton, ArhoolieClifton Chenier & The Red Hot Louisiana Band: Clifton Chenier (vocals, accordion); Sherman Robertson (guitar); C. J. Chenier (alto saxophone); Warren Cesar (trumpet); Alonzo Johnson, Jr. (bass); Robert St. Judy (drums); Cleveland Chenier (rubboard). Recorded live at The Long Beach Blues Festival, Long Beach, California in 1983 and at The San Fransisco Blues Festival, San Fransisco, California in 1982. Includes liner notes by Chris Strachwitz. Originally released in 1985, this set offers a dozen songs recorded at the Long Beach Blues Festival in 1983 and another seven from the San Francisco Blues Festival a year earlier. While Chenier made some remarkable studio recordings, he was at his best live. Joined here by his Red Hot Louisiana Band, the seven musicians are a non-stop rhythmic groove machine. Chenier's accordion and vocals are the glue that holds it all together, and his good natured manner shows him to be the perfect host at every turn. The band works its magic on traditional zydeco fare such as "Cher Catin" and "Zydeco Cha Cha," as well as rocking R&B numbers like Ray Charles's "What'd I Say?" The ensemble sports just two horn players but their smart and sassy parts bolster like a whole platoon.

French Blues * by Nathan Abshire (CD - 06/02/1993)
"French Blues *" (06/02/1993) Cajun Abshire, Nathan, ArhooliePersonnel: Nathan Abshire (vocals, accordian); Ernest Thibodeaux (vocals, guitar); Will Kegley (vocals, fiddle); Dewey Balfa, Little Yvonne Le Blanc, Jake Miere, Roy Broussard (vocals); Jim Baker (bass); Oziet Kegley (drums). Compilation producer: Chris Strachwitz. Includes liner notes by Chris Strachwitz. FRENCH BLUES represents Abshire's earliest known recordings. Highly influential Cajun hits, recorded between 1949 and 1956, but sounding for all the world as if they were cut two or three decades earlier, both sonically and musically. This is fiddle- and accordion-driven party music, pure and simple, and if it occasionally seems to veer drunkenly out of control, with Abshire essentially yelling lyrics that might be indecipherable even if you spoke Creole, well, that's part of its charm, as is the oddly tuned pedal steel guitar that decorates many of the tracks.

Zydeco Blues by Clifton Chenier (CD - 06/08/2004)
"Zydeco Blues" (06/08/2004) Cajun Chenier, Clifton, Varese Sarabande (USA)Liner Note Author: Bill Dahl. Drawing from 1960s and '70s recordings, this is an intriguing assembly of songs by the revered "King of Zydeco." Clifton Chenier essentially invented the zydeco genre single-handedly in the late '40s and early '50s by blending Cajun two-step and the French folk music of the Bayou with hard-driving R&B. ZYDECO BLUES focuses specifically on interpretations of traditional blues with a zydeco twist. The instrumentation is pure zydeco, with Chenier's accordion in the foreground, rub-board rhythm accompaniment (from his brother Cleveland Chenier), and a guitar/bass/drums combo providing support. Down-tempo numbers "Ain't No Need of Cryin'" and "Trouble in Mind" seem out of keeping with Chenier's usual boot-stomping aesthetic, but an excellent cover of Boozoo Chavis's "Paper in My Shoe" and a tongue-in-cheek version of Glen Miller's "In the Mood" keep things in a fun-loving mode. Though showing signs of age here, Chenier's voice is still full of celebratory spark, and his accordion playing is as dynamic and agile as ever. ZYDECO BLUES is a fine later recording by the bayou legend.

Bayou Blues by Clifton Chenier (Cassette)
"Bayou Blues" (n/a) Cajun Chenier, Clifton, Specialty RecordsProducer: Art Rupe. Compilation producer: Barret Hansen. Includes liner notes by Barret Hansen. Digitally remastered by Little Walter DeVenne. Clifton Chenier's recordings for the Los Angeles-based Specialty label in the fifties are among his earliest. What these dozen tracks make clear is that he was creating a music that has the same clarity and sense of purpose he'd have over the next thirty years. Combing his homeland Cajun music with blues, he created an alluring blend that was at once hypnotic and danceable. By the late sixties his success spilled over into the rest of the world, making him the first bona fide Cajun star. As both an instrumentalist--on his accordion--and a singer, he was never short of impassioned. This set is a bracing look at his strong beginnings. For his recordings of a decade later, try BON TON ROULET! or LOUISIANA BLUES AND ZYDECO.
Zydeco Blues Party by Fernest Arceneaux (Cassette - 04/16/1995)
"Zydeco Blues Party" (04/16/1995) Cajun Arceneaux, Fernest, Mardi Gras RecordsPersonnel: Fernest Arceneaux (vocals, accordion); Paul "Lil' Buck" Senegal (guitar); John Hart (saxophone); Alonzo Johnson, Jr. (bass); Joseph Edwards (drums); Dalton "Del" Arceneaux, Rockin' Dopsie, Jr. (washboard). Recorded at Ultrasonic Studios, New Orleans, Louisiana in 1994. Includes liner notes by Jerry Embree. ZYDECO BLUES PARTY, Fernest Arceneaux's first widely distributed release, reveals how much Arceneaux's style has been influenced by Clifton Chenier and Buckwheat Zydeco. This is hard, bluesy zydeco, what Stanley Dural of Buckwheat Zydeco called "zydeco with an African trim." The recording also demonstrates why Arceneaux has been appreciated in Southwest Louisiana as a master accordionist for so long. The band's version of "Jolie Blonde," the virtual Cajun national anthem, is a hot one. Rockin' Dopsie Jr.'s frottoir (rub board) playing gives drive and character to the rhythm section. Hopefully, this marvelous disk will let everyone outside of Louisiana know that this band ranks with the very best zydeco ensembles. This is music for dancing!
