Canon's ZR10 is an affordable DV (digital video) camcorder that has enough features to satisfy most home videographers. The 0.25-inch CCD (charge coupled device) in this camcorder offers 460,000 pixels. You can monitor what you are filming on the 2.5-inch LCD (liquid crystal display) viewscreen, which swivels into and away from the camera body, or via the traditional color viewfinder. The ZR10 also packs an image stabilizer to keep your shots steady. The ZR10 leads a double life, as it functions as a digital still camera as well, storing up to 700 photos. You can add a six-second commentary to each image. This camcorder has 10x optical and 200x digital zoom. As for connectivity, there are S-video and A/V jacks, as well as an IEEE 1394 (FireWire) interface. The latter lets you transfer your footage to a similarly equipped computer for editing. You might use the analog A/V inputs to put your old videotapes onto DV tape. Also notable are the digital effects and faders for image manipulation. Effects include black-and-white, sepia-tone, mosaic and art (solarization). -- BN
