If the massive lens assembly, hefty magnesium body and included shoulder pad aren't enough to clue you into the fact that Canon is aiming its XL1 camcorder at the "prosumer" market, then the price tag should clear things up. At a list price of $4699, the XL1, the flagship model in Canon's digital video (DV) fleet, is obviously meant for users who take videography very seriously. You do get substantial high-end features for all of that dough, however. The XL1's most noteworthy is its 3-CCD imaging system. All camcorders record images using a light-sensitive chip called a charge coupled device (CCD). Most consumer models use only one such chip, but upscale cameras like the XL1 use individual CCDs for red, green and blue. This separation allows for asharper final image.Another nice high-end extra is Canon's SuperRange optical image stabilization system. Most camcorders stabilize video by processing the footage digitally -- which degrades the image. Optical stabilization actually uses microprocessor-controlled prisms to compensate for camera shake, yielding much sharper results. Finally, the XL1 also features an interchangeable lens mount system for greater versatility. A 16x optical zoom lens comes standard, but you can replace it with a variety of optional accessory lenses, such as Canon's 3x wide-angle assembly. You can also get an optional adapter that allows you to use lenses and filters sized for standard 35mm cameras.Other specs worth noting are the six-mode program auto exposure (AE),the detachable stereo microphone, and the redundant sets of recording controls -- one set positioned on the side of the camera, the other mounted on top for more comfortable low-angle shooting. -- RM

While prices for digital video camcorders have been steadily dropping to more consumer-friendly levels, there are still a number of high-end models aimed at serious amateurs and small-business "prosumers" that cost as much as a decent used car. Case in point: Sony's DCR-TRV900.The most conspicuous design difference between this camera and mass-market models is the trio of image-forming CCDs. Typically, DV camcorders have just one CCD, which packs hundreds of thousands of light-sensitive pixels into a quarter-inch area. High-end cameras, however, use separate CCDs for red, green and blue, to produce superior color fidelity.Another high-end feature is the progressive scan capability of the PV900's CCDs. Because progressive scanning captures an entire frame in one pass rather than in the two passes need for interlaced scanning, you can get sharper stills if you're capturing JPEG images from motion video. (You can capture still images at 640 x 480 resolution onto the tape or an optional PC card.)The TRV900's 12x optical zoom is respectable for a DV camcorder, though it's hardly Guinness material. It's high enough, though, that you'll appreciate the image stabilization function, which minimizes the high-Richter effects of a shaky hand. Sony uses an optical system that tends to yield better results than digital image stabilization. Also available from Sony is the DCR-PC1, a more affordable single-CCD design.
