The bargain solution is Denon's DCD-1650, which skimps on the gold plating and rampant overbuilding while still managing to provide some very similar separates-grade statistics.Denon's ALPHA processing used some convoluted math to provide 20-bit resolution from 16-bit CD sources, although it's different from HDCD which does essentially the same thing. Your HDCDs won't be properly decoded on this Denon (try the DCM-370 for that), but your standard CDs may sound up to 20 percent better, especially in the area of low-level detail.The 1650 also sports a beefy 20-bit 4-DAC converter, as well as 8x oversampling for a processing section that's difficult to beat. In case you find a better processor, Denon included both optical and digital outputs, which make digital recording a high-fidelity snap.On the transport side, the loading mechanism is centered to maximize stability. Jitter-reducing damping and an automatically adjusting digital servo should keep playback rock-steady.The 1650 also sports a peak search to identify the CD's highest levels for easy recording, and auto edit to optimize program time according to a cassette's length. The LCD display can be dimmed so as not to disturb the late-night listener.
