As always, the Wiggles' music is just clever and funny enough that most parents won't mind hearing the album up to three or four times per day.

Those with children of a certain age are probably already familiar with the Wiggles, an Australian quartet who are basically the Beatles for the preschool set. The comparison is not quite as outlandish as that sounds, because on Here Comes the Big Red Car, as on their earlier albums, the songs have a maturity of composition and arrangement that's far beyond what most other artists in their genre are doing. This is a slightly roundabout way of saying that although the Wiggles' lyrics will never be mistaken for Elvis Costello's (the title track is extremely insistent on the importance of wearing one's seat belt), the poppy, catchy tunes are melodically sturdy and interestingly arranged. In other words, when the kids want to play this album five times in one afternoon, it'll be considerably less annoying than the average children's music album of weedy acoustic guitar or characterless, rinky-dink synths. ~ Stewart Mason

The Wiggles are smart enough to not stray away from their popular formula, but by adding Steve Irwin they are able to keep their music and CDs interesting. The Wiggles write perfect children's music. The songs are short, bright, and peppy with strong beats and repeated lyrics. Children will love this, as will adults. They are sort of the Beatles for kids with a great deal of humor. The melodies are strong and the songs are about animals -- great music for the family. All of the regulars are here: Captain Feathersword, Dorothy the Dinosaur, and Henry the Octopus. And the standard Wiggles fare is here. Jeff Fatt even manages to fall asleep and needs to be woken, as usual. "Wiggly Wiggly World [16 Tracks] [Blister]" (06/24/2003) Children's Wiggles (The), Koch Records (USA)While all Wiggles albums share common elements -- tons of verve, infectious singalong melodies, the power to create pictures in young minds -- Wiggly, Wiggly World! finds the Australian kids music kings at the top of their game. A combination of sprightly originals and adaptations (co-presented by the original artists), this album skips along at a peppy pace. There's some great variety here, but it all gets the Wiggles treatment, making the disc as seamless and coherent as the foursome's more thematic albums. Kids with any affection for the Wiggles' music -- and that's a big club! -- will be enthralled by Wiggly, Wiggly World! from start to finish. It's ultra bubbly, mucho catchy, and, yes, educational. Not to mention ethnically diverse. Australian country legend Slim Dusty chips in with his hearty hit "(I Love to Have a Beer With) Duncan," which here becomes "I Love to Have a Dance With Dorothy." Meanwhile, Torres Strait Islander Christine Anu sings the traditional song "Taba Naba" and former Split Enz frontman, New Zealander Tim Finn, gets Captain Feathersword quite excited with his pop hit "Six Months in a Leaky Boat." For some fair dinkum Aussie fun, Rolf Harris breaks out his famous wobble board for his Down Under classic "Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport," while Japanese singer Atsuko Arai presents the beautiful "Haru Ga Kita." And of course the boys in the bright-colored skivvies bring plenty of their own songs to the party. It's a kiddie disco with irresistible numbers like "In the Wiggles' World," "In the Big Red Car We Like to Ride," and the hilarious "Blow Me Down." Highly recommended for ages one to 100. Get it?), Anthony Field, Murray Cook, Jeff Fatt, and Greg Page get out the bandannas, western shirts, and Stetsons for a ride on "The Wiggly Trail," as well as other adventures. Opener "We're the Cowboys" is a nice country & western singalong; it also introduces the "Yee-HAH!" and "Yipeee!" western whoops that pepper Cold Spaghetti Western. "Master Pasta Maker (From Italy)" introduces an Italian chef friend of the Wiggles'; he sings in Italian as the track gets faster and faster, and continues the Italian lessons through the funny introduction to "Follow the Bird." "Hey Now, Let's Have a Party!" is a nice mix of Caribbean and Latin styles, and "Fiesta Siesta" teaches kids the Spanish words for both party and nap. Cold Spaghetti's best moments feature Wiggles guests Fernando and Fernandito Moguel. The Moguels speak mostly Spanish during their introductions, but despite only minimal translation from the Wiggles, they're remarkably easy to understand. They perform the Mexican traditionals "Cielito Lindo" and "El Pato," furthering the international flair of the Wiggles' western trek. But it's their conversations that are key, since they become subtle lessons in linguistics for curious kids. ~ Johnny Loftus

In conjunction with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's "For Kids" programming comes the Wiggles' Whoo Hoo! Wiggly Gremlins! This time around, the album theme seems to be a Wiggles TV show. Murray Cook, Jeff Fatt, Anthony Field, and Gregory Page are up to their usual antics, presenting their poppy songbook of kid-friendly songs with the usual round of wacky introductions. "Welcome to Network Wiggles!" gets everyone involved tidying up the studio for the show to begin, while "Bit by Bit (We're Building a Set)" is a pleasant, '60s-style pop ditty about constructing a television at home. Later there's the funny "Where's Jeff?" ("Is he sleeping outside?" a deep voice asks), as well as the spazzy hot jazz update "Wiggly Sports Theme," which is sure to tire out even the most hyper kid. The Australian combo is quite skilled at writing songs simplistic enough for kids to follow, but with enough depth that they don't dull the brains of adults. Top of the Tots features the usual spoken song introductions, and Murray Cook, Jeff Fatt, Anthony Field, and Greg Page are in a rambunctious mood, calling to each other midsong. Musically, Tots is a rousing set of breezy piano-led, harmony-drenched pop/rock. "Central Park New York" has a sort of South Pacific lilt, and contains the classic line "G'day squirrels!"; "Fly Through the Sky" and "Feeling Chirpy" channel the bold bubblegum of Ohio Express or Starland Vocal Band; and "New York Firefighter" could be indie darlings the Lucksmiths. This is what makes the Wiggles and Top of the Tots so enjoyable. Sure, the songs are goofy ("We love to work all day/Laying bricks the brickie way," from "The Bricklayers Song"). But the songwriting is strong, varied, and relatively adventurous for children's music.
