"Wiggly Safari" (06/24/2003) Children's Wiggles (The), Koch Records (USA)On this release, the Wiggles joined forces with The Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, which makes sense since they are all from Australia. For the most part the music is pure Wiggles with added comments from Irwin and his wife, Terri Irwin. The Wiggles are smart enough to not stray away from their popular formula, but by adding Steve Irwin they are able to keep their music and CDs interesting. The Wiggles write perfect children's music. The songs are short, bright, and peppy with strong beats and repeated lyrics. Children will love this, as will adults. They are sort of the Beatles for kids with a great deal of humor. The melodies are strong and the songs are about animals -- great music for the family. All of the regulars are here: Captain Feathersword, Dorothy the Dinosaur, and Henry the Octopus. And the standard Wiggles fare is here. Jeff Fatt even manages to fall asleep and needs to be woken, as usual. The CD closes with a wonderful medley of their hits, which makes a great way to conclude this fun CD. ~ Aaron Badgley

Audio Mixer: Robin Gist. Liner Note Author: Anthony Field. Recording information: Electric Avenue Studios, Sydney, New South Wales, Austr. Arrangers: Gregory Page ; Jeffrey Andrew Caddick; Anthony Field; The Wiggles; Steve Machamer; Murray Cook; Jeff Fatt; Dominic Lindsay; Angelo Lindsay; Margaret Lindsay. For Go to Sleep Jeff, the Wiggles put aside their usual high-energy fare and present a set of lush lullabies. The tracks are first presented with spoken introductions -- in the form of explanations, scene setting, or guided meditations -- and then repeated without the intros. Suffused with dreamy orchestration and soothing backing vocals by the Manzillas, this mix of songs and instrumental pieces (with the emphasis heavily on the former), comes right out of the sandman's own record collection. And, in keeping with the foursome's multi-cultural philosophy, they've included traditional tunes from Australia, Ireland, Poland, and Greece. There's also an adaptation of "Brahms' Lullaby," as well as a strong quota of Wiggles' originals. Lyrics have been included, so parents can sing along to their child. A superb sleep-time album for the young ones. ~ Adrian Zupp

"Hoop-Dee-Doo! It's a Wiggly Party" (06/24/2003) Children's Wiggles (The), Koch Records (USA)The Wiggles: Greg Page, Mark Punch, Paul Paddick, Carolyn Ferrie, Morgan Crowley, Fernando Moguel Sr., Fernando Moguel Jr. (vocals); Murray Cook (guitar, bass guitar); Anthony Brahe (guitar, background vocals); Anthony Field, Terry Murray (guitar); Maria Schattavits (violin); Angela Morrison (viola); Margaret Lindsay (cello); Dominic Lindsay (trumpet); Roy Ferrin (trombone); Natalie Morrison (double bass); Jeff Fatt (bass guitar); Tony Henry (drums); Paul Field (background vocals). The Wiggles' fifth album, Hoop-Dee-Doo! It's a Wiggly Party, features more of their sing and dance-along songs and distinctly down under sense of humor. From traditional favorites like "La Cucaracha" and "Marie's Wedding" to quirky originals like "Move Like an Emu," Hoop-Dee-Doo! It's a Wiggly Party offers plenty of activity for young Wiggles fans. Dorothy the Dinosaur, Wags the Dog, Henry the Octopus, and Captain Feathersword -- as well as Greg, Murray, Jeff, and Anthony -- all have star turns on songs like "Dance the Ooby-Doo (With Dorothy the Dinosaur)" and "Play Your Guitar With Murray." Playful, diverse, and energetic, Hoop-Dee-Doo! It's a Wiggly Party is just as charming as the Wiggles' show and other albums. ~ Heather Phares

"Sailing Around the World" (06/21/2005) Children's Wiggles (The), Koch Records (USA)The Wiggles: Greg Page, Anthony Field, Murray Cook, Jeff Fatt. Personnel: Fernando Moguel Jr. (vocals, guitar); Gregory Page (vocals); Mark Punch (guitar, manzello); John Field , Anthony Field, Robin Gist (guitar); Craig Abercrombie, Sam Moran, Ryan DeSaulnier, Paul Paddick (manzello); Dominic Lindsay (brass, keyboards, percussion); Jeff Fatt, Steve Blau (keyboards); Tom Henry, Tony Henry (drums). Arrangers: Murray Cook; Jeff Fatt; Anthony Field; John Field ; Gregory Page ; Sam Moran; Dominic Lindsay. Available as an album, a DVD, and a summer 2005 concert tour, SAILING AROUND THE WORLD is the Wiggles' SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND. A concept album with an appropriately descriptive title, SAILING AROUND THE WORLD is a 30-track tour around the globe. (The album's 15 songs, with 15 spoken intros, are programmed separately so that impatient kids can skip over them). Each song is about a specific location, and most are in a Wiggly approximation of the predominant musical culture, so "Hula Hula Hula (Nothing Could Be Cooler)" is semi-Hawaiian and "Agapame Tin Athena (We Love Athens)" has a surprisingly authentic bouzouki sound. As always, the Wiggles' music is just clever and funny enough that most parents won't mind hearing the album up to three or four times per day.

"Whoo Hoo! Wiggly Gremlins!" (06/08/2004) Children's Wiggles (The), Koch Records (USA)Personnel: Sam Moran (vocals, background vocals); Gregory Page , Fernando Moguel Jr. (vocals); Colin Watson, John Field , Anthony Field, Robin Gist (guitar); Dominic Lindsay (brass); Steve Blau (keyboards); Tony Henry (drums); Steve Machamer (percussion); Craig Abercrombie, Simon Pryce, Brenda Clarke, Paul Paddick (background vocals). Recording information: Electric Avenue Studios, Sydney, New South Wales, Austr. Arrangers: The Wiggles; Dominic Lindsay. In conjunction with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's "For Kids" programming comes the Wiggles' Whoo Hoo! Wiggly Gremlins! This time around, the album theme seems to be a Wiggles TV show. Murray Cook, Jeff Fatt, Anthony Field, and Gregory Page are up to their usual antics, presenting their poppy songbook of kid-friendly songs with the usual round of wacky introductions. "Welcome to Network Wiggles!" gets everyone involved tidying up the studio for the show to begin, while "Bit by Bit (We're Building a Set)" is a pleasant, '60s-style pop ditty about constructing a television at home. Later there's the funny "Where's Jeff?" ("Is he sleeping outside?" a deep voice asks), as well as the spazzy hot jazz update "Wiggly Sports Theme," which is sure to tire out even the most hyper kid. Dabba dabba dop dop, dabba dabba dop dop, bop bop dabba doo bow! ~ Johnny Loftus

And what would a Wiggles party be without Dorothy the Dinosaur, Captain Feathersword, Wags the Dog, and Henry the Octopus along? The title track promises tons of fun and the crew delivers with adventures on the sand, in the water, and eventually some in space. Anthony, Murray, Jeff, and Greg even light up the barbie on the beach. As with all the Wiggles discs, Wiggle Bay is packed with enough song, dance, and fun to please any child. ~ Donn Stroud

"Splish, Splash, The Big Red Boat!" (06/27/2006) Children's Wiggles (The), Hit EntertainmentThis 2006 album by the Wiggles finds the wildly popular Australian group performing nautical-themed songs for children such as the jaunty "Big Red Boat" and the breezy "Take a Trip Out on the Sea," along with other fun-filled tunes. Primarily geared towards younger kids, SPLISH SPLASH BIG RED BOAT features enough catchy melodies and good-natured jokes to make it appealing to older children and parents, too.

"Here Comes the Big Red Car" (01/10/2006) Children's Wiggles (The), Koch Records (USA)Personnel: Emma Buter, Gregory Page , Paul Paddick (vocals); John Field , Anthony Field, Terry Murray (guitar); Greg Truman, Gerry Brady, Sam Moran, Ryan DeSaulnier (manzello); Jeff Fatt (keyboards); Andrew Bignall, Tony Henry (drums). Audio Mixers: Phil Judd ; Anthony McKenzie; Robin Gist; Chris Brooks. Audio Remasterer: Don Bartley. Recording information: Struggle Street Studios, Bellevue Hill, Sydney, New Sou; Tracking Station Studios. Unknown Contributor Roles: Alex Keller; Sarah McCloskey; Leeanne Ashley; Tony Rioseco; Kate Tibbertsma; Kim Clelland; Sharyn Garrad; Mike Conway; Paul Field. Arranger: Dominic Lindsay. Those with children of a certain age are probably already familiar with the Wiggles, an Australian quartet who are basically the Beatles for the preschool set. The comparison is not quite as outlandish as that sounds, because on Here Comes the Big Red Car, as on their earlier albums, the songs have a maturity of composition and arrangement that's far beyond what most other artists in their genre are doing. This is a slightly roundabout way of saying that although the Wiggles' lyrics will never be mistaken for Elvis Costello's (the title track is extremely insistent on the importance of wearing one's seat belt), the poppy, catchy tunes are melodically sturdy and interestingly arranged. In other words, when the kids want to play this album five times in one afternoon, it'll be considerably less annoying than the average children's music album of weedy acoustic guitar or characterless, rinky-dink synths. ~ Stewart Mason

"Top of the Tots" (02/10/2004) Children's Wiggles (The), Koch Records (USA)The Wiggles: Greg Page (vocals); Anthony Field (guitar, keyboards); Jeff Fatt (keyboards). Additional personnel: John Field, Robin Gist, Colin Watson (guitar); Dominic Lindsay (brass); Steve Blau (keyboards); Murray Cook, Chris Lupton (bass); Tony Henry (drums); The Manzillas (background vocals). Recorded at Electric Avenue Studios, Sydney, Australia. It's another lighthearted collection of well-made children's music from the Wiggles. The Australian combo is quite skilled at writing songs simplistic enough for kids to follow, but with enough depth that they don't dull the brains of adults. Top of the Tots features the usual spoken song introductions, and Murray Cook, Jeff Fatt, Anthony Field, and Greg Page are in a rambunctious mood, calling to each other midsong. Musically, Tots is a rousing set of breezy piano-led, harmony-drenched pop/rock. "Central Park New York" has a sort of South Pacific lilt, and contains the classic line "G'day squirrels!"; "Fly Through the Sky" and "Feeling Chirpy" channel the bold bubblegum of Ohio Express or Starland Vocal Band; and "New York Firefighter" could be indie darlings the Lucksmiths. This is what makes the Wiggles and Top of the Tots so enjoyable. Sure, the songs are goofy ("We love to work all day/Laying bricks the brickie way," from "The Bricklayers Song"). But the songwriting is strong, varied, and relatively adventurous for children's music. Other topics covered on Top of the Tots include gardening, cowboys, going to the doctor, kneading dough, and walking on the moon; a full lyric sheet is included. ~ Johnny Loftus

Recording information: Albert Studios, Sydney, Australia. Arrangers: Christine Anu; Murray Cook; Dominic Lindsay; Gregory Page ; Anthony Field; The Wiggles; Jeff Fatt. While all Wiggles albums share common elements -- tons of verve, infectious singalong melodies, the power to create pictures in young minds -- Wiggly, Wiggly World! finds the Australian kids music kings at the top of their game. A combination of sprightly originals and adaptations (co-presented by the original artists), this album skips along at a peppy pace. There's some great variety here, but it all gets the Wiggles treatment, making the disc as seamless and coherent as the foursome's more thematic albums. Kids with any affection for the Wiggles' music -- and that's a big club! -- will be enthralled by Wiggly, Wiggly World! from start to finish. It's ultra bubbly, mucho catchy, and, yes, educational. Not to mention ethnically diverse. Australian country legend Slim Dusty chips in with his hearty hit "(I Love to Have a Beer With) Duncan," which here becomes "I Love to Have a Dance With Dorothy." Meanwhile, Torres Strait Islander Christine Anu sings the traditional song "Taba Naba" and former Split Enz frontman, New Zealander Tim Finn, gets Captain Feathersword quite excited with his pop hit "Six Months in a Leaky Boat." For some fair dinkum Aussie fun, Rolf Harris breaks out his famous wobble board for his Down Under classic "Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport," while Japanese singer Atsuko Arai presents the beautiful "Haru Ga Kita." And of course the boys in the bright-colored skivvies bring plenty of their own songs to the party. It's a kiddie disco with irresistible numbers like "In the Wiggles' World," "In the Big Red Car We Like to Ride," and the hilarious "Blow Me Down." Highly recommended for ages one to 100.
