"Putumayo Kids Presents: Dreamland - World Lullabies" (05/20/2003) Children's Various Artists, PutumayoPerformers include: Angelique Kidjo, Carlos Santana, Zulya, Beatriz Pichi Malen, Claudia Martinez, Letterstick Band, Fortuna, Sibongile Khumalo, Erick Manana, The Sanshin Cafe Orchestra, Virginia Rosa, Teresa Doyle, Tanja Solnik, Lynn Morrison. Liner Note Author: Jacob Edgar. Illustrator: Nicola Heindl. Arrangers: Lynn Morrison; Sibongile Khumalo. Putumayo's Dreamland - World Lullabies & Soothing Songs gathers a baker's dozen of diverse but restful songs aimed at -- but not restricted to -- children. The collection takes care to represent as many countries and continents as possible, and likewise presents its liner notes in four different languages (English, Spanish, French, and Dutch) and offers phonetic pronunciations of the artists' names and song titles. However, the eclecticism and egalitarianism of the album feel anything but forced, as calming but beautifully distinct songs such as Ang?lique Kidjo & Carlos Santana's West African-inspired "Na?ma," a lullaby written for and named after Kidjo's daughter, and Eric Manana's ode to his mother and his homeland of Madagascar, "Ny Fitiaavako An'I Mama," flow into each other. At other times the album makes unique cultural and musical contrasts, putting Teresa Doyle's wintry "A Lullabye," a traditional Scottish-Canadian song, next to the considerably warmer and softer "Thula Mama" by Sowetan vocalist Sibongile Khumalo. Not surprisingly, the Brazilian lullabies -- Virginia Rosa's "L  Vai Algu?m" and Fortuna's "Durme Durme" (which also reflects her Sephardic heritage) -- are among the most elegant on the collection; the Sanshin Cafe Orchestra's playful lullaby from Okinawa, Japan, "Cradle Song," is possibly the most creative, musically speaking. All of the songs on the album are so lovely and so invested with the artists' heritage that it's somewhat surprising that most of these songs were culled from other albums instead of being recorded for this project. Lynn Morrison's Scottish lullaby "Cradle Spell of Dunvegan" is a song she learned to sing her son to sleep, and tells the story of a man who marries a fairy and has a son with her; the fairy disappears, but returns when she hears the child crying in the night and soothes him. Tanja Solnik's Jewish lullaby "Numi Numi," Beatriz Pichi Malen's Argentinian "Canci¢n Para Dormir a un Ni?o," and Zulya's Russian "Lullaby" have a similar bittersweet beauty, while Claudia Martinez's "Arriba del Cielo" and the Letterstick Band's aboriginal Australian lullaby "Yi-Rrana" are more on the cute and charming side. Along with offering many different ways to go to sleep, Dreamland - World Lullabies & Soothing Songs is a fascinating, educational collection of music for music fans old and young alike. ~ Heather Phares

"Happy Birthday Little Girl" (02/03/2004) Children's Various Artists, Name SakesComposers: Richard Kimmings; Andy Green. Personnel: Ingrid DuMosch (vocals). Illustrator: Ian Triggs. Happy Birthday Little Girl is a generic, but fairly pleasant, collection of singalong songs aimed at young children. Aside from "Happy Birthday to You" and the original song "My Birthday," the collection isn't really all that birthday-oriented; the rest of the album focuses on songs that lend themselves to games and activities, such as "Ring Around the Rosy," "The Itsy Bitsy Spider," and "Sally Go Round the Sun." "Five Speckled Frogs," "Old MacDonald," and "Baa Baa Black Sheep" are some of the other highlights. Happy Birthday Little Girl isn't a bad collection, but in an age where families can make customized birthday mixes for their kids, it may not have enough personality. ~ Heather Phares Happy Birthday Little Boy is a generic, but fairly pleasant, collection of singalong songs aimed at young children. "Baby's First Classics: Classical Treasures [Slipcase]" (10/01/2005) Children's Various Artists, Denon RecordsBaby's First Classics: Classical Treasures features classical pieces that suit a variety of settings and moods, from playful to restful, for babies and young children. The album has a more focused approach than many classics-for-babies collections do; it features excerpts from Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, Debussy's Children's Corner, and Bach's Orchestral Suite, No. 1 in C Major, along with smaller pieces like Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata: Adagio Sostenuto, and Dukas' The Sorcerer's Apprentice. This collection is lower on lullabies than many other baby-oriented classical music collections, but it's still a fine album that should appeal to babies and their parents alike. ~ Heather Phares

"Really Rockin': Classic Rock for Kids by Kids" (10/25/2005) Children's Various Artists, Music For Little PeopleIllustrator: Toni Pawlowsky. "These classics are performed by award-winning tween and teen singers with new style and flare!" exclaims the back cover of Really Rockin': Classic Rock for Kids by Kids. The awards they may have won are never detailed, but the kids singing these oldies radio favorites from the Beach Boys, Elvis, and others keep the mood light and the performances slight. Their breezy, carefree takes on songs like the Beatles' "All You Need Is Love" ("Nothing you can say but you learn how to play the game...it's eeee-zeeee!") fall somewhere between elementary school recital and singing along with the radio, making Really Rockin' an enjoyably easygoing way for kids to explore the music of the baby boomers and flower children. ~ Johnny Loftus

"Favorite Children's Songs [Sony 3 Pak] [Box]" (08/10/2004) Children's Various Artists, Sony Music Distribution (USA)Sony's Favorite Children's Songs packs a whopping 90 kids' songs onto three CDs. Virtually every popular children's song is represented, including "Baa Baa Black Sheep," "Clementine," "I've Been Working On the Railroad," "Hokey Pokey," and "The Eensy Weensy Spider," among many, many others. The productions and arrangements are fair to decent, featuring a child vocal group and session musicians who don't get in the way of the songs too much. The collection has only a couple of drawbacks: it doesn't offer quite as much personality as a more individual album of children's songs would, and its track list is too scattered, moving from energetic singalongs to lullabies without much notice. Still, if you need kids' songs in bulk, you could do a lot worse than Favorite Children's Songs. ~ Heather Phares

"Nick Holiday" (11/01/2005) Children's Various Artists, Nick RecordsArrangers: George Acogny; Hal Waite. It's a very Nickelodeon Christmas with SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora, Jimmy Neutron, the Fairly Oddparents, the Rugrats, and the Backyardigans. Nick Holiday opens with SpongeBob and his pals singing "Very First Christmas"; they rhyme the made-up word "loverly" with the phrase "harm you bodily" and still maintain their holiday spirit. Dora contributes backing vocals to "Feliz Navidad," with a friendly male voice leading, and the Rugrats baby-talk their way through "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer." The impersonated infant voices are pretty grating -- at least to grown-up ears -- especially when they start yelling "Here we go here we go!" over "Rudolph"'s hip-hop beat. But like the rest of Nick Holiday, the song is bright and irrepressibly happy, perfect for keeping kids occupied while you finish wrapping their presents. ~ Johnny Loftus

"Nickelodeon Kids Choice" (03/22/2005) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Nick RecordsAudio Mixers: Eric Valentine ; Mike Shipley. Arrangers: Sam Watters; Louis Biancaniello. The nominees for 2005's Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards cover relative newcomers (Ryan Cabrera and Skye Sweetnam), as well as tried-and-tested stars, including Britney Spears, Alicia Keys, and Avril Lavigne. Keys's entry, "Diary," featuring ultra-smooth backing vocals courtesy of 1990s superstar R&B outfit Tony Toni Tone, is an appropriately sophisticated after-hours confection, in contrast to AMERICAN IDOL winner Kelly Clarkson's high-energy "Miss Independent," which shows the talented singer at her passionate best. Fantasia's epic ballad "I Believe" is an emotive tour-de-force, while Good Charlotte contributes the catchy up-tempo rock of "Predictable." Jessica Simpson's remake of Berlin's 1980s hit "Take My Breath Away" further cements the star's pop credentials, and Lavigne's forceful delivery of "My Happy Ending" marks her as a vocalist with staying power. In addition, Switchfoot's swaying anthem "Dare You to Move" is a poised entry from a Christian band with pop smarts and rock moves in abundance.
