"Kidz Bop, Vol. 3" (03/04/2003) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Razor & Tie MusicCompilation producers: Aaron Brotherton, Nicole McHugh, Dean Babin. This is part of Razor & Tie's "Kidz Bop" series. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Or so the thinking goes for the Razor & Tie folks who've put together KIDZ BOP 3, another collection of recent hits delivered by a gang of children doubling as session vocalists. No pop stone is left unturned, as there are songs by older artists like Sheryl Crow ("Soak Up the Sun") and Mary J. Blige ("Family Affair"), alt-rock groups P.O.D. ("Alive") and the Calling ("Wherever You Will Go"), and boy-band pin-up Justin Timberlake ("Girlfriend"). Music fans whose tastes run more along the R&B tip get shiny, kid-friendly versions of songs by Ashanti ("Happy"), Pink ("Don't Let Me Get Me"), Nelly ("Dilemma"), and Usher ("U Don't Have To Call"). Skate-punks also get a tip of the hat via covers of Avril Lavigne ("Complicated") and No Doubt ("Hey Baby"). There's even a representation of young divas-in-training Michelle Branch ("All You Wanted") and Vanessa Carlton ("A Thousand Mile") along with American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson ("A Moment Like This").

The title track promises tons of fun and the crew delivers with adventures on the sand, in the water, and eventually some in space. Anthony, Murray, Jeff, and Greg even light up the barbie on the beach. As with all the Wiggles discs, Wiggle Bay is packed with enough song, dance, and fun to please any child. ~ Donn Stroud

"Start Singing With Barney" (11/11/2003) Children's Barney (Children), Koch Records (USA)Principal cast: Dean Wendt (Barney); Julie Johnson (Baby Bop); Patty Wirtz (BJ). Barney, Baby Bop, and BJ return with Start Singing With Barney, a 23-track collection of lively singalong material. There's plenty of silly fun to be had here -- in Barney's world, phrases like "Diddle-daddle doo," "On your tummy now," and "Hi, little ducks! Waddle, waddle, waddle! So cute!" take on new resonance. Everything's a good time, from reading ("I Love to Read!/Books Are Fun!") to pitching in ("Clean Up"). But Barney isn't all about making mundane things magical. He and his dino-riffic pals also like to dance for their inspiration. "Bumpin' Up and Down," "Gaggle, Giggle, Wiggle Dance/The Dino Dance," and a country-flavored take on "Old MacDonald" all bop along at a kid-friendly pace perfect for following along at home. To that end, Start Singing With Barney includes a full lyric sheet in its liner notes. Album standouts include "The Popcorn Song," "The Clapping Song," and that perennial favorite and set-closer, "I Love You." ~ Johnny Loftus

"Wiggly Safari" (06/24/2003) Children's Wiggles (The), Koch Records (USA)On this release, the Wiggles joined forces with The Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, which makes sense since they are all from Australia. For the most part the music is pure Wiggles with added comments from Irwin and his wife, Terri Irwin. The Wiggles are smart enough to not stray away from their popular formula, but by adding Steve Irwin they are able to keep their music and CDs interesting. The Wiggles write perfect children's music. The songs are short, bright, and peppy with strong beats and repeated lyrics. Children will love this, as will adults. They are sort of the Beatles for kids with a great deal of humor. The melodies are strong and the songs are about animals -- great music for the family. All of the regulars are here: Captain Feathersword, Dorothy the Dinosaur, and Henry the Octopus. And the standard Wiggles fare is here. Jeff Fatt even manages to fall asleep and needs to be woken, as usual. The CD closes with a wonderful medley of their hits, which makes a great way to conclude this fun CD. ~ Aaron Badgley

Audio Mixer: Robin Gist. Liner Note Author: Anthony Field. Recording information: Electric Avenue Studios, Sydney, New South Wales, Austr. Arrangers: Gregory Page ; Jeffrey Andrew Caddick; Anthony Field; The Wiggles; Steve Machamer; Murray Cook; Jeff Fatt; Dominic Lindsay; Angelo Lindsay; Margaret Lindsay. For Go to Sleep Jeff, the Wiggles put aside their usual high-energy fare and present a set of lush lullabies. The tracks are first presented with spoken introductions -- in the form of explanations, scene setting, or guided meditations -- and then repeated without the intros. Suffused with dreamy orchestration and soothing backing vocals by the Manzillas, this mix of songs and instrumental pieces (with the emphasis heavily on the former), comes right out of the sandman's own record collection. And, in keeping with the foursome's multi-cultural philosophy, they've included traditional tunes from Australia, Ireland, Poland, and Greece. There's also an adaptation of "Brahms' Lullaby," as well as a strong quota of Wiggles' originals. Lyrics have been included, so parents can sing along to their child. A superb sleep-time album for the young ones. ~ Adrian Zupp

"Hoop-Dee-Doo! It's a Wiggly Party" (06/24/2003) Children's Wiggles (The), Koch Records (USA)The Wiggles: Greg Page, Mark Punch, Paul Paddick, Carolyn Ferrie, Morgan Crowley, Fernando Moguel Sr., Fernando Moguel Jr. (vocals); Murray Cook (guitar, bass guitar); Anthony Brahe (guitar, background vocals); Anthony Field, Terry Murray (guitar); Maria Schattavits (violin); Angela Morrison (viola); Margaret Lindsay (cello); Dominic Lindsay (trumpet); Roy Ferrin (trombone); Natalie Morrison (double bass); Jeff Fatt (bass guitar); Tony Henry (drums); Paul Field (background vocals). The Wiggles' fifth album, Hoop-Dee-Doo! It's a Wiggly Party, features more of their sing and dance-along songs and distinctly down under sense of humor. From traditional favorites like "La Cucaracha" and "Marie's Wedding" to quirky originals like "Move Like an Emu," Hoop-Dee-Doo! It's a Wiggly Party offers plenty of activity for young Wiggles fans. Dorothy the Dinosaur, Wags the Dog, Henry the Octopus, and Captain Feathersword -- as well as Greg, Murray, Jeff, and Anthony -- all have star turns on songs like "Dance the Ooby-Doo (With Dorothy the Dinosaur)" and "Play Your Guitar With Murray." Playful, diverse, and energetic, Hoop-Dee-Doo! It's a Wiggly Party is just as charming as the Wiggles' show and other albums. ~ Heather Phares

"Christmas" (09/01/2002) Oldies Spice Mice, CMH RecordsAs hard as it might be to believe, Spice Mice somehow have made a oddly listenable Christmas album. Taking on the characters of three snowboarding mice singing rock versions of Christmas standards, this album is a cute, funny album for children. Adults may find themselves slowly going crazy from the vocal effects used to make the singers sound like mice, but the songs are surprisingly well-done and completely appropriate for children. They even have a few Latin-flavored numbers on the album, proving that there are endlessly bizarre variations on Christmas songs. Children will definitely enjoy this; adults should already know that this is not meant for them. ~ Bradley Torreano
