"Kidz Party Songs" (03/18/2003) Children's Various Artists, Big Eye MusicKidz Party Songs is a strange album. Ostensibly a collection of well-known pop radio hits redone by unknown studio musicians, its stated purpose is to be a singalong album for kids. But this isn't cheesy synthesizers, Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laaa, and Po. This isn't even Raffi. Kidz Party Songs is a street-smart, well-produced presentation catering to smart, media-savvy kids who carry cell phones to peewee soccer practice. Pink's "Get the Party Started," Avril Lavigne's "Sk8er Boi," and Jennifer Lopez's "Love Don't Cost a Thing" are just a few of the ultra-modern pop artists featured. Each song is meticulously re-created, down to the G-funk organ in "Party"'s chorus and "Sk8er Boi"'s overdriven guitars and pitch-shifted vocal line. Barring a few slight tempo adjustments likely to make the vocals more lucid, the 15 tracks making up Kidz Party Songs are as radio-/MTV-ready as the originals. This might be a problem, since J-Lo isn't exactly Marlo Thomas. It's true that the original artists do not appear on Kidz Party Songs -- but their distinct, larger-than-life personas are what helped each of these songs become hits in the first place, and the faithful versions included here only drive home artist images, no matter how inappropriate they may be. No Doubt's "Hey Baby" -- an ode to the ease of backstage lovin' -- is included here, complete with a replication of Bounty Killer's mid-song chat. Sure, Bounty Killer is a world-famous dancehall artist. But attaching his after-image to an album meant for children is a bit odd. Relatively innocuous tracks like the Beach Boys' "Fun Fun Fun" and the interminable "Who Let the Dogs Out?" fill out Kidz Party Songs. But with its cartoon cover art and a promise to donate 25 cents from each album sold, the album's creators might have more clearly marked the line between singalong fun and surreal pop music fantasy. ~ Johnny Loftus
