"Free to Be...You and Me" (05/09/2006) Children's Thomas, Marlo, Sony WonderAdditional guest artists: Dick Cavett, Carol Channing, Billy De Wolf, Rosey Grier, Shirley Jones, Bobby Morse, The New Seekers, Diana Ross, Diana Sands, Tommy Smothers. Recorded at A&R Studios in New York City. Marlo Thomas & Friends: Bobby Morse, Rosey Grier, Dick Cavett, Harry Belafonte, Jack Cassidy , Alan Alda, Marlo Thomas, Mel Brooks, Shirley Jones , The New Seekers, Tom Smothers, Diana Ross, Billy DeWolfe, Carol Channing (vocals). This soundtrack album to the Emmy Award-winning 1974 children's TV special has become something of a classic over the years, and with good reason--its kid-friendly message of tolerance still resonates. More importantly, the songs, including contributions from Broadway vet Sheldon Harnick and Dr. Hook auteur Shel Silverstein, are cute without being cloying--"My Dog Is a Plumber" and "Don't Dream Your Cat in an Apron" are particularly endearing--and the cast is pure '70s variety-show heaven. Frankly, any album featuring Alan Alda, Mel Brooks, and Carol Channing is doing something right from the get-go.

"Kidz Bop 8" (08/02/2005) Children's Kidz Bop Kids, Razor & Tie MusicRecording information: 2005. Like a version of NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL MUSIC! overrun by children, the unstoppable KIDZ BOP series features youngsters singing pop hits while backed by adult musicians and vocalists. On KIDZ BOP 8, the kids get particularly rambunctious on U2's surging "Vertigo" and, oddly enough, Franz Ferdinand's post-punk single "Take Me Out," which features enthusiastic shouting at random intervals. For other tracks, the Kidz Bop crew mellows out a bit, most notably on the Frankie J slow jam "Obsession (No Es Amor)" and Gwen Stefani's shuffling "Rich Girl," while Avril Lavigne's "Nobody's Home" allows the ensemble to take on a sad-yet-soaring power ballad. For those who thought that the KIDZ BOP collections were a passing fad, 2005's KIDZ BOP 8 shows that these pint-sized vocalists have serious staying power.

"Catch That Train!" (05/16/2006) Children's Zanes, Dan, Festival Five RecordsThis is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Additional personnel: Kronos Quartet, Nick Cave, Blind Boys Of Alabama. By the time of this 2006 outing, former Del Fuegos frontman Dan Zanes was more renowned for his children's albums than for his regular pop/rock recordings. Like his fellow Brooklynites They Might Be Giants, Zanes has a knack for crafting whimsical tunes that are geared towards kids, but are equally enjoyable for parents, as revealed on the jangly title track and the breezy, laid-back "Summer Wind." Like his past releases for youngsters, Zanes invites a few guest stars aboard, including the Blind Boys of Alabama (the jubilant, inviting "Welcome Table"), Natalie Merchant (the lilting, rustic "Loch Lomond"), and, oddly enough, Nick Cave (the charming, waltz-like "Sweet Roseanna"). Dynamic and thoroughly entertaining, CATCH THAT TRAIN! is sure to please Zanes's fans of all ages and win over some new admirers as well.

"House Party" (10/07/2003) Children's Zanes, Dan, Festival Five RecordsPersonnel includes: Dan Zane (vocals, guitar); Philip Glass, Deborah Harry, David Jones, Angelique Kidjo, Bob Weir, The Rubi Theater Company, Barbara Brousal, Rankin' Don. Best known as the front man for the rock group the Del Fuegos, Dan Zanes turns to children's music on HOUSE PARTY. Quite simply, this is warm and fuzzy American roots music. Most of the tunes on this album are cute ditties that draw from country, folk, and bluegrass. Use of mandolin, acoustic guitars, fiddles, and accordion give this recording a rustic feel and Zanes's many special guests add charm to this already inviting disc. Zanes performs a duet with Deborah Harry (from Blondie) on the classic folk song "Waltzing Matilda." Even though the lyric to this tune revolves around stealing, a near arrest, and an implied suicide, listeners have long embraced the silliness of these lyrics about a swagman (roving farmhand) and a jumbuck (sheep). Another 19th-century tramp song, "Wabash Cannonball," is performed here by Zanes and Grateful Dead singer Bob Weir. The words to this piece recount the mythical transcontinental train known as the Wabash Cannonball. This hobo classic is given an upbeat bluegrass treatment and Zanes and Weir really invoke the mystique of the lone boxcar drifter.

"Sailing Around the World" (06/21/2005) Children's Wiggles (The), Koch Records (USA)The Wiggles: Anthony Field, Greg Page, Murray Cook, Jeff Fatt. Available as an album, a DVD, and a summer 2005 concert tour, SAILING AROUND THE WORLD is the Wiggles' SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND. A concept album with an appropriately descriptive title, SAILING AROUND THE WORLD is a 30-track tour around the globe. (The album's 15 songs, with 15 spoken intros, are programmed separately so that impatient kids can skip over them). Each song is about a specific location, and most are in a Wiggly approximation of the predominant musical culture, so "Hula Hula Hula (Nothing Could Be Cooler)" is semi-Hawaiian and "Agapame Tin Athena (We Love Athens)" has a surprisingly authentic bouzouki sound. As always, the Wiggles' music is just clever and funny enough that most parents won't mind hearing the album up to three or four times per day.

"Kidz Bop 9" (02/21/2006) Children's Kidz Bop Kids, Razor & Tie MusicKidz Bop Kids: Amelia (vocals); Vasco (guitar); Tammy (bass guitar); Jessica (drums); Eli (programming). The KIDZ BOP series, which features choruses of children reprising contemporary pop hits, has raised a few hackles among parents concerned about the lyrical appropriateness of some of the songs. Should kids be singing along to sexy songs of seduction? Whatever one's position, KIDZ BOP is a huge hit, and the ninth addition to the series carries on the fun, frolicsome tradition. KIDZ BOP 9 includes such mid-2000s singles as Rihanna's reggaeton-flavored "Pon de Replay" and Gorillaz's "Feel Good Inc.," the sound of which does, in fact, make one feel good, and no less so when a bunch of youngsters take the mic. Detractors will find more to complain about with this one, but those already sold on the concept will find plenty to enjoy.

"Some Assembly Required *" (09/27/2005) Children's Chapin, Tom, Razor & Tie MusicPersonnel: Tom Chapin (vocals, 12-string guitar, autoharp, 6-string bass); Jon Cobert (vocals, harp, accordion, piano, organ, synthesizer); Michael Mark (vocals, kazoo, bass guitar); Ira Siegel (electric guitar); Eric Weissberg (dobro, banjo); Larry Campbell (mandolin, fiddle); Joanie Madden (whistle); John Forster (synthesizer, programming); Clint deGanon (drums). Additional personnel: Dan Zanes, Laurie Berkner, Vanessa Williams, Victoria Ambrose, Warren McKinzie, Rachel Melton, Janie Owens, Michael Roy, Gail Royster, Keith Artez Smith, Jane Sylvester, Charlene Weaver (vocals). Harry Chapin's younger brother Tom has had a successful career of recording songs for children since the late 1980s. Bridging the gap between songs for the very young and bubblegum music, Chapin's unpretentious material is both entertaining and intellectually stimulating, predating late-'90s kid-oriented artists like They Might Be Giants and the Del Fuegos' Dan Zanes. His appealing SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED consists of a variety of folksy songs about puppies, astronomy, shoes, and, in a duet with Zanes, ecology.

"The Johnny Cash Children's Album" (05/16/2006) Children's Cash, Johnny, Legacy RecordingsPersonnel: Johnny Cash; Larry Gatlin, Carl Perkins. Recording information: 1975. Issued on CD for the first time in 2006, this 1975 outing finds country legend Johnny Cash offering up a charming set of kid-oriented songs. Many of the tracks sound like other Cash classics, albeit with the Man in Black singing about dinosaurs (the whimsical "Dinosaur Song") and bears (the jaunty "Tiger Whitehead") rather than heartbreak and prison. By no means a novelty recording, the disc is actually better than some of Cash's regular albums from the '70s, making it ideal for his devoted fans, as well as kids and their parents.

"Kidz Bop 3" (03/04/2003) Children's Kidz Bop Kids, Razor & Tie MusicCompilation producers: Aaron Brotherton, Nicole McHugh, Dean Babin. This is part of Razor & Tie's "Kidz Bop" series. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Or so the thinking goes for the Razor & Tie folks who've put together KIDZ BOP 3, another collection of recent hits delivered by a gang of children doubling as session vocalists. No pop stone is left unturned, as there are songs by older artists like Sheryl Crow ("Soak Up the Sun") and Mary J. Blige ("Family Affair"), alt-rock groups P.O.D. ("Alive") and the Calling ("Wherever You Will Go"), and boy-band pin-up Justin Timberlake ("Girlfriend"). Music fans whose tastes run more along the R&B tip get shiny, kid-friendly versions of songs by Ashanti ("Happy"), Pink ("Don't Let Me Get Me"), Nelly ("Dilemma"), and Usher ("U Don't Have To Call"). Skate-punks also get a tip of the hat via covers of Avril Lavigne ("Complicated") and No Doubt ("Hey Baby"). There's even a representation of young divas-in-training Michelle Branch ("All You Wanted") and Vanessa Carlton ("A Thousand Mile") along with American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson ("A Moment Like This").

"Kidz Bop 6" (08/10/2004) Children's Kidz Bop Kids, Razor & Tie MusicRecording information: 2004. The sixth installment in the wildly popular KIDZ BOP series presents more kids singing pop and R&B songs (with some help from adult vocalists and musicians). Jessica Simpson's romantic "With You" is first up on this Kidz Bop Kids outing, followed by Maroon 5's amazingly catchy "This Love." As always, the children's vocals are at the forefront, backed by grown-up singers and synthesizer-based music. Other highlights of KIDZ BOP 6 include Beyonce's determined "Me, Myself & I," a string-filled take on Sheryl Crow's version of "The First Cut Is the Deepest," and a lively remix of Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful." This energetic sampling of popular kid-appropriate tunes is sure to please both children and their parents.
