"Start Singing With Barney" (11/11/2003) Children's Barney (Children), Koch Records (USA)Principal cast: Dean Wendt (Barney); Julie Johnson (Baby Bop); Patty Wirtz (BJ). Barney, Baby Bop, and BJ return with Start Singing With Barney, a 23-track collection of lively singalong material. There's plenty of silly fun to be had here -- in Barney's world, phrases like "Diddle-daddle doo," "On your tummy now," and "Hi, little ducks! Waddle, waddle, waddle! So cute!" take on new resonance. Everything's a good time, from reading ("I Love to Read!/Books Are Fun!") to pitching in ("Clean Up"). But Barney isn't all about making mundane things magical. He and his dino-riffic pals also like to dance for their inspiration. "Bumpin' Up and Down," "Gaggle, Giggle, Wiggle Dance/The Dino Dance," and a country-flavored take on "Old MacDonald" all bop along at a kid-friendly pace perfect for following along at home. To that end, Start Singing With Barney includes a full lyric sheet in its liner notes. Album standouts include "The Popcorn Song," "The Clapping Song," and that perennial favorite and set-closer, "I Love You." ~ Johnny Loftus

"Free to Be...You and Me" (05/09/2006) Pop Vocal Various Artists, Sony Music Distribution (USA)Additional guest artists: Dick Cavett, Carol Channing, Billy De Wolf, Rosey Grier, Shirley Jones, Bobby Morse, The New Seekers, Diana Ross, Diana Sands, Tommy Smothers. Recorded at A&R Studios in New York City. Various Artists/Marlo Thomas: Bobby Morse, Rosey Grier, Dick Cavett, Harry Belafonte, Jack Cassidy , Alan Alda, Marlo Thomas, Mel Brooks, Shirley Jones , The New Seekers, Tom Smothers, Diana Ross, Billy DeWolfe, Carol Channing (vocals). This soundtrack album to the Emmy Award-winning 1974 children's TV special has become something of a classic over the years, and with good reason--its kid-friendly message of tolerance still resonates. More importantly, the songs, including contributions from Broadway vet Sheldon Harnick and Dr. Hook auteur Shel Silverstein, are cute without being cloying--"My Dog Is a Plumber" and "Don't Dream Your Cat in an Apron" are particularly endearing--and the cast is pure '70s variety-show heaven. Frankly, any album featuring Alan Alda, Mel Brooks, and Carol Channing is doing something right from the get-go.

"Sings Traditional Christmas Carols" (09/01/2002) Children's Seeger, Pete, Smithsonian Folkways RecordingsAdapter: Marion Hicks. Personnel: Pete Seeger (vocals, guitar, banjo). Liner Note Author: Leslie Shephard. Photographer: John Vachon. Arranger: Marion Hicks. Though they often get overlooked in the holiday blitz of Bing Crosby's "White Christmas," Brenda Lee's "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree," and the Beach Boys' "Little Saint Nick," there are few holiday treasures more satisfying than traditional Christmas carols. Pete Seeger's 1967 collection of yuletide traditionals, simply titled TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS CAROLS, is one of the best. Seeger sings these tunes alone, accompanying himself on banjo and guitar. Some of them are hundreds of years old, and they're rendered with grace and reverence. From familiar tunes like "The First Noel" and "What Child Is This?" to more obscure carols like "Lo How a Rose E'er Blooming" and "12 Gates to the City," Seeger's choices are exquisite. The two versions--vocal and instrumental--of the lovely "Carol of the Beasts" are as beautiful as holiday sings get.
