"Ten Little Monsters" (08/27/2002) Children's Countdown Kids (The), Madacy KidsThis CD is part of Madacy Kids' "Silly Songs" series. Despite its title, which would suggest a larger theme, Ten Little Monsters is a relatively straightforward collection of children's music that doesn't focus on monsters much beyond its title track. Songs such as "Yankee Doodle Dandy," "Ring-A-Ring-A-Roses," and "Jack and Jill" share space with fun singalong material like "There's a Hole in the Bottom of the Sea" and "Aiken Drum." The piano and gleeful children's voices that lead most arrangements do get tiresome after a bit, but since only one song breaks the three minute barrier, it's difficult for anything on Ten Little Monsters to become unbearable. A full lyric sheet is included with the album. ~ Johnny Loftus

"Hey Diddle Diddle [Madacy]" (08/27/2002) Children's Countdown Kids (The), Madacy KidsThis CD is part of Madacy Kids' "Silly Songs" series. Hey Diddle Diddle is another in Madacy's seemingly never-ending series of cheerful children's music albums. But while most of the collections draw from the same tired song list, this particular release deserves credit for at least searching around a bit. Although classics such as the title track, "Sing a Song of Sixpence," and "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" are fine, it's the more rarely heard songs that resonate here. "There Was a Bee-I-Ee-I-Ee," "Knees Up Mother Brown," and "A-Goong Went the Little Green Frog" are all standouts. In addition, Hey Diddle Diddle accentuates its piano and children's choir-led arrangements with instrumentation like bassoon and harmonica. The additions might be as synthesized as the album's percussion; nevertheless, they make the release more unique than its cookie-cutter peers. A full lyric sheet is included inside. ~ Johnny Loftus

"Little Red Caboose" (08/27/2002) Children's Countdown Kids (The), Madacy KidsThis CD is part of Madacy Kids' "Silly Songs" series. Heading out of the station with one of the world's best singalongs ("John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt"), Little Red Caboose keeps on shoveling the coal with "Polly Put the Kettle On" and employs a banjo and synthesized harmonica to give an express version of "I've Been Working on the Railroad" plenty of steam -- and that's just the first three songs. While a few tracks in the middle of the set slow things down, the jaunty piano breaks and fun wordplay of "Hunk of Tin" get things moving again, setting up a strong finish that pairs "I Wish I Were a Little Bar of Soap" with "A Peanut Sat on a Railroad Track," two songs that should have junior engineers everywhere laughing in their overalls (the former, after all, does say "heinie" in the chorus). Overall, Little Red Caboose is more consistently entertaining and fun than many of Madacy's children's music releases because it tries its best to vary its instrumentation while keeping its more precocious qualities to a minimum. A full lyric sheet is included with the album. ~ Johnny Loftus

"Shoo Fly" (08/27/2002) Children's Countdown Kids (The), Madacy KidsThis CD is part of Madacy Kids' "Silly Songs" series. Rated for ages two and up, Shoo Fly is a collection of whimsical songs that should easily appeal to young children. It's unclear from the album's liner notes whether the featured vocalists are young or old, which is strange, because it's equally difficult to tell from their cloyingly high voices. While this is a little disconcerting for adults, children likely won't mind. The collection remains upbeat throughout, with the faux bluegrass of "Oh Susanna," "Arkansas Traveler," and the title track standing out. "Roll Over (Six in the Bed)" is a fun singalong, and even if the percussion is synthesized throughout, it gives the songs some much-needed bottom end. ~ Johnny Loftus

"Do Your Ears Hang Low" (08/27/2002) Children's Countdown Kids (The), Madacy KidsThis CD is part of Madacy Kids' "Silly Songs" series. Do Your Ears Hang Low? presents 12 songs based loosely around animal themes. Besides the title track, there are the stories of "Five Little Monkeys," the humps on "Alice the Camel," and "A Ram Sam Sam," which -- even if it's really just gibberish -- is likely the most fun song here. Simple piano arrangements abound, and the tunes are sung by a happy-go-lucky group of child vocalists who rarely overstay their welcome. "Peas Pudding Hot" might be the best track; it features a burping horn accompaniment that's as novel an instrumental turn as it is a funny sound to get young listeners laughing. Do Your Ears Hang Low? is rated for ages two and up, and includes a full lyric sheet. ~ Johnny Loftus

"The Ants Go Marching" (08/27/2002) Children's Countdown Kids (The), Madacy KidsThis CD is part of Madacy Kids' "Silly Songs" series. Illustrator: Romel Velasco. Madacy's The Ants Go Marching is a collection of singalong favorites rated for ages two and up. Based loosely around a theme of animals, it's upbeat and enjoyable, even if the age and identity of the vocalists are unclear. "The Horse Went Around" and "Skinamarink" are standouts, as is the banjo and fiddle accompaniment of "Skip to My Lou." Best is the classic "Little Bunny Foo-Foo," "Scoopin' up the field mice and boppin' 'em on the head." The spoken word, good witch portion of the verse is an album clincher, if only for the witch's threat to turn Little Bunny Foo-Foo into a duck. A lyric sheet is included with The Ants Go Marching to facilitate singalongs. ~ Johnny Loftus
