Those with children of a certain age are probably already familiar with the Wiggles, an Australian quartet who are basically the Beatles for the preschool set. The comparison is not quite as outlandish as that sounds, because on Here Comes the Big Red Car, as on their earlier albums, the songs have a maturity of composition and arrangement that's far beyond what most other artists in their genre are doing. This is a slightly roundabout way of saying that although the Wiggles' lyrics will never be mistaken for Elvis Costello's (the title track is extremely insistent on the importance of wearing one's seat belt), the poppy, catchy tunes are melodically sturdy and interestingly arranged. In other words, when the kids want to play this album five times in one afternoon, it'll be considerably less annoying than the average children's music album of weedy acoustic guitar or characterless, rinky-dink synths. ~ Stewart Mason

"Whoo Hoo! Wiggly Gremlins!" (06/08/2004) Children's Wiggles (The), Koch Records (USA)Personnel: Sam Moran (vocals, background vocals); Gregory Page , Fernando Moguel Jr. (vocals); Colin Watson, John Field , Anthony Field, Robin Gist (guitar); Dominic Lindsay (brass); Steve Blau (keyboards); Tony Henry (drums); Steve Machamer (percussion); Craig Abercrombie, Simon Pryce, Brenda Clarke, Paul Paddick (background vocals). Recording information: Electric Avenue Studios, Sydney, New South Wales, Austr. Arrangers: The Wiggles; Dominic Lindsay. In conjunction with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's "For Kids" programming comes the Wiggles' Whoo Hoo! Wiggly Gremlins! This time around, the album theme seems to be a Wiggles TV show. Murray Cook, Jeff Fatt, Anthony Field, and Gregory Page are up to their usual antics, presenting their poppy songbook of kid-friendly songs with the usual round of wacky introductions. "Welcome to Network Wiggles!" gets everyone involved tidying up the studio for the show to begin, while "Bit by Bit (We're Building a Set)" is a pleasant, '60s-style pop ditty about constructing a television at home. Later there's the funny "Where's Jeff?" ("Is he sleeping outside?" a deep voice asks), as well as the spazzy hot jazz update "Wiggly Sports Theme," which is sure to tire out even the most hyper kid. Dabba dabba dop dop, dabba dabba dop dop, bop bop dabba doo bow! ~ Johnny Loftus

"Top of the Tots" (02/10/2004) Children's Wiggles (The), Koch Records (USA)The Wiggles: Greg Page (vocals); Anthony Field (guitar, keyboards); Jeff Fatt (keyboards). Additional personnel: John Field, Robin Gist, Colin Watson (guitar); Dominic Lindsay (brass); Steve Blau (keyboards); Murray Cook, Chris Lupton (bass); Tony Henry (drums); The Manzillas (background vocals). Recorded at Electric Avenue Studios, Sydney, Australia. It's another lighthearted collection of well-made children's music from the Wiggles. The Australian combo is quite skilled at writing songs simplistic enough for kids to follow, but with enough depth that they don't dull the brains of adults. Top of the Tots features the usual spoken song introductions, and Murray Cook, Jeff Fatt, Anthony Field, and Greg Page are in a rambunctious mood, calling to each other midsong. Musically, Tots is a rousing set of breezy piano-led, harmony-drenched pop/rock. "Central Park New York" has a sort of South Pacific lilt, and contains the classic line "G'day squirrels!"; "Fly Through the Sky" and "Feeling Chirpy" channel the bold bubblegum of Ohio Express or Starland Vocal Band; and "New York Firefighter" could be indie darlings the Lucksmiths. This is what makes the Wiggles and Top of the Tots so enjoyable. Sure, the songs are goofy ("We love to work all day/Laying bricks the brickie way," from "The Bricklayers Song"). But the songwriting is strong, varied, and relatively adventurous for children's music. Other topics covered on Top of the Tots include gardening, cowboys, going to the doctor, kneading dough, and walking on the moon; a full lyric sheet is included. ~ Johnny Loftus

"Splish, Splash, The Big Red Boat!" (06/27/2006) Children's Wiggles (The), Hit EntertainmentThis 2006 album by the Wiggles finds the wildly popular Australian group performing nautical-themed songs for children such as the jaunty "Big Red Boat" and the breezy "Take a Trip Out on the Sea," along with other fun-filled tunes. Primarily geared towards younger kids, SPLISH SPLASH BIG RED BOAT features enough catchy melodies and good-natured jokes to make it appealing to older children and parents, too.

"Let's Wiggle" (06/24/2003) Children's Wiggles (The), Koch Records (USA)The Wiggles: Greg Page (vocals); Murray Cook, Anthony Field (guitar, background vocals); Jeff Fatt (background vocals). Additional personnel: Maria Schattovits, Margarer Lindsay (strings); Dominic Lindsay (trumpet); Tony Henry, Paul Hester (drums, percussion); Greg Truman, Mark Punch, (background vocals). Recorded in Sydney, Australia. This U.S. collection of early Wiggles material offers up 22 sunny songs, the majority of which are under two minutes in length. Not a concept disc like most of the group's releases, Let's Wiggle nevertheless reflects many of the ideas that the children's music superstars from Australia would later expand on. Hence, you'll find bright original numbers for the tots to dance to, some traditional songs, and a dash of ethnic variety. Most of the numbers are cheery but there are also some more laid-back cuts, such as the peaceful "The Dreaming Song" (a reference to the legendary "dream time" of the Australian Aborigine people), complete with didgeridoo. The guys "sugar up" rock & roll, country, folk, and other musical forms as they deliver such goodies as the bouncy big-band number "Get Ready to Wiggle," the fiddle-riddled jig "Silver Bells (That Ring in the Night)," the traditional sea shanty "Bound for South Australia," and the extra-jolly marching song "I Look in the Mirror." From start to finish, it's clear that the Wiggles understand kids and how to regale and engage them. A swag of great songs with fun themes and positive messages. ~ Adrian Zupp

"Sailing Around the World" (06/21/2005) Children's Wiggles (The), Koch Records (USA)Available as an album, a DVD, and a summer 2005 concert tour, SAILING AROUND THE WORLD is the Wiggles' SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND. A concept album with an appropriately descriptive title, SAILING AROUND THE WORLD is a 30-track tour around the globe. (The album's 15 songs, with 15 spoken intros, are programmed separately so that impatient kids can skip over them). Each song is about a specific location, and most are in a Wiggly approximation of the predominant musical culture, so "Hula Hula Hula (Nothing Could Be Cooler)" is semi-Hawaiian and "Agapame Tin Athena (We Love Athens)" has a surprisingly authentic bouzouki sound. As always, the Wiggles' music is just clever and funny enough that most parents won't mind hearing the album up to three or four times per day.
