"Toddlers Sing & Learn [Blister]" (06/22/1999) Children's Various Artists, Madacy DistributionThe Toddlers Sing 'n Learn edition of Wonder Kids is intended for ages two through four. Nevertheless, it's fun to hear the adult female lead work her way through tracks like "Old Macdonald," stuttering like a young Roger Daltrey. "With a butterfly here, b-b-butterfly," she sings. Here of course, the consonant emphasis is intended as a spelling lesson. Things continue rather conventionally from there, with the same female vocalist trading leads with child soloists and choruses. The hokey sound effects of "O Where Has My Little Dog Gone" make it a fun standout, while the funky clavinet and rock backbeat of "My Backyard" make it a classic for older brother's garage band to perform at junior's birthday party. Finally, a closing version of "The More We Are Together" is sung a cappella and in the round, making it a guaranteed singalong fave. Toddlers Sing 'n Learn's entire program repeats in split-track format, making that singalong session easier. Intended for ages three through seven, Kids Silly Song Sing-A-Longs is a lively collection of favorites performed by a cheery children's choir with accompaniment that's cloying but never overbearing. The collection is chock-full of old-school classics, including the sassy, upbeat "Froggie Went A-Courtin'," "O My Darlin' Clementine," "Alouette," and "Camptown Races." Newer material like "I'm an Alligator" (complete with a deep-voiced personification of said gator) might not be as strong, but is still enjoyable. Kids Silly Song Sing-A-Longs -- while not necessarily as silly as its title would have you believe -- does a good job of keeping its songs concise. The brevity (nothing is over two minutes in length) should hold the attention of young listeners, but it also keeps the simplistically happy music from becoming maddening to adults. Designed for children from newborn to age six, Lullabies for Little Angels is a collection of well-known lullabies performed mostly by a children's choir, with the occasional female lead vocal. Standouts include an a cappella version of "Goodnight Little Lamb," as well as the nursery-room classic "Little Boy Blue." While the cloying quality of this album can get a bit irritating for adults, there's no doubt that it will put anyone to sleep.
