"Mother Goose Songs" (11/10/1998) Children's Various Artists, Madacy DistributionAlso available as part of the 3-CD set CHILDREN'S SING-A-LONG FAVORITES. The Mother Goose Songs edition of the Wonder Kids series presents 21 singalong favorites performed by the Wonder Kids Choir. While the album does tend to bog down in the same sappiness that coats too many children's music releases, the Wonder Kids do turn in some solid performances, especially on the ska-inflected "Shoo Fly" and the singsongy "I'm Bringing Home a Bumble Bee" as well as the timeless classic "I'm a Little Teapot." The standout track is a leadoff version of "Jack and Jill" spiced up with a funky organ break replete with synthesized steel drum fills. Mother Goose Songs' entire 21-track program repeats in split-track format, making singalong sessions easier. A full lyric sheet is also included. ~ Johnny Loftus Mother Goose Songs has an assortment of familiar and favorite nursery rhymes, including "Jack and Jill," "B-I-N-G-O, " "Itsy Bitsy Spider, " "Peas Porridge Hot" and "Hey Diddle Diddle." ~ John Bush

Here, an effective, if not particularly exceptional, children's chorus leads the way through 20 well-known hymns and religious-themed songs. Keep in mind that the arrangements on Bible Action Songs have much more in common with conventional children's albums than reverent church music. For example, a sassy Annie-sound-alike takes lead on a pop-jazz version of "Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho." The entire program repeats in "split-track" format after the first run-through, making use for singalongs simple. A full lyric sheet is also included. ~ Johnny Loftus Wonder Kids: Sunday Sing-a-Long Classics features 18 Christian-themed songs performed by a cheery children's choir and is intended for ages three through ten. It should be noted that the arrangements here are much closer to conventional children's music than the more reverent side of things; in fact, tracks like a country hoedown version of "Jesus Loves Me" and a Caribbean-flavored "Peter, James and John in a Sailboat" (complete with steel drum!) are downright uproarious. But after all, this is a collection of singalong classics, so its upbeat feel should only add to its effectiveness. "Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam" and "What a Mighty Hand" are other standouts on the collection, which repeats its entire program in singalong-friendly split-track format after the stereo version plays out. A full lyric sheet is also included. ~ Johnny Loftus Bible Action Songs has an assortment of religious play-along action favorites, including "This Little Light of Mine," "Deep and Wide, " "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands, " "Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes" and "Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho." ~ John Bush Sunday Sing-A-Long Classics has an assortment of familiar favorites ("Jesus Loves Me," "O How I Love Jesus, " "Give Me Oil in My Lamp, " "Fishers of Men") and more recent songs ("Peter, James & John in a Sailboat, " "What a Mighty Hand, " "Wide as the Ocean, " "Footprints on the Water"). ~ John Bush

"Toddlers Sing & Learn [Blister]" (06/22/1999) Children's Various Artists, Madacy DistributionThe Toddlers Sing 'n Learn edition of Wonder Kids is intended for ages two through four. Nevertheless, it's fun to hear the adult female lead work her way through tracks like "Old Macdonald," stuttering like a young Roger Daltrey. "With a butterfly here, b-b-butterfly," she sings. Here of course, the consonant emphasis is intended as a spelling lesson. Things continue rather conventionally from there, with the same female vocalist trading leads with child soloists and choruses. The hokey sound effects of "O Where Has My Little Dog Gone" make it a fun standout, while the funky clavinet and rock backbeat of "My Backyard" make it a classic for older brother's garage band to perform at junior's birthday party. Finally, a closing version of "The More We Are Together" is sung a cappella and in the round, making it a guaranteed singalong fave. Toddlers Sing 'n Learn's entire program repeats in split-track format, making that singalong session easier. A full lyric sheet is also included. ~ Johnny Loftus Toddlers Sing & Learn has an assortment of familiar favorites ("Old MacDonald," "Sing a Song of Sixpence, " "Ring Around the Rosie") and more recent novelties ("Little Bunny Foo Foo, " "My Backyard, " "Say, Say Little Playmate, " "Billy Boy"). ~ John Bush

"Wonder Kids: Kids Silly Song Sing-A-Longs" (06/06/2000) Children's Various Artists, Madacy DistributionAlso available as part of the 3-CD set CHILDREN'S SING-A-LONG FAVORITES. Intended for ages three through seven, Kids Silly Song Sing-A-Longs is a lively collection of favorites performed by a cheery children's choir with accompaniment that's cloying but never overbearing. The collection is chock-full of old-school classics, including the sassy, upbeat "Froggie Went A-Courtin'," "O My Darlin' Clementine," "Alouette," and "Camptown Races." Newer material like "I'm an Alligator" (complete with a deep-voiced personification of said gator) might not be as strong, but is still enjoyable. Kids Silly Song Sing-A-Longs -- while not necessarily as silly as its title would have you believe -- does a good job of keeping its songs concise. The brevity (nothing is over two minutes in length) should hold the attention of young listeners, but it also keeps the simplistically happy music from becoming maddening to adults. The entire set is repeated in split-track format; a full lyric sheet is also included. ~ Johnny Loftus

"Wonder Kids: Lullabies for Little Angels [Blister]" (06/22/1999) Children's Various Artists, Madacy DistributionThis is a special Split-Track Sing-A-Long CD. Songs 1 through 18 play in stereo. All songs then repeat in Split-Track. Designed for children from newborn to age six, Lullabies for Little Angels is a collection of well-known lullabies performed mostly by a children's choir, with the occasional female lead vocal. Standouts include an a cappella version of "Goodnight Little Lamb," as well as the nursery-room classic "Little Boy Blue." While the cloying quality of this album can get a bit irritating for adults, there's no doubt that it will put anyone to sleep. After the 18-track program plays through in its entirety, it repeats in "split-track" format, making it easy to use as a singalong tool. A full lyric sheet is included. ~ Johnny Loftus
