Bible Action Songs is part of Madacy's Wonder Kids series, which presents music for children in an easy-to-sing-along format. Here, an effective, if not particularly exceptional, children's chorus leads the way through 20 well-known hymns and religious-themed songs. Keep in mind that the arrangements on Bible Action Songs have much more in common with conventional children's albums than reverent church music. For example, a sassy Annie-sound-alike takes lead on a pop-jazz version of "Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho." The entire program repeats in "split-track" format after the first run-through, making use for singalongs simple. A full lyric sheet is also included. ~ Johnny Loftus Wonder Kids: Sunday Sing-a-Long Classics features 18 Christian-themed songs performed by a cheery children's choir and is intended for ages three through ten. It should be noted that the arrangements here are much closer to conventional children's music than the more reverent side of things; in fact, tracks like a country hoedown version of "Jesus Loves Me" and a Caribbean-flavored "Peter, James and John in a Sailboat" (complete with steel drum!) are downright uproarious. But after all, this is a collection of singalong classics, so its upbeat feel should only add to its effectiveness. "Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam" and "What a Mighty Hand" are other standouts on the collection, which repeats its entire program in singalong-friendly split-track format after the stereo version plays out. A full lyric sheet is also included. ~ Johnny Loftus Bible Action Songs has an assortment of religious play-along action favorites, including "This Little Light of Mine," "Deep and Wide, " "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands, " "Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes" and "Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho." ~ John Bush Sunday Sing-A-Long Classics has an assortment of familiar favorites ("Jesus Loves Me," "O How I Love Jesus, " "Give Me Oil in My Lamp, " "Fishers of Men") and more recent songs ("Peter, James & John in a Sailboat, " "What a Mighty Hand, " "Wide as the Ocean, " "Footprints on the Water"). ~ John Bush

"The First Grade: Greatest Hits" (12/01/2002) Children's Various Artists, Madacy KidsContains 50 tracks. Intended for children ages six and seven, this three-disc collection presents 50 songs to sing along to, ranging from classics such as "Pop Goes the Weasel" and "FrŠre Jacques" to more creative inclusions like "The Instruments" and "Big Rock Candy Mountain." While the cheeky kids' choir that performs most of the material here is adept at moving things along, the choir's cloying harmonies do become a bit irritating after a while. But as long as it isn't listened to in one sitting, this collection will be successful, as it offers plenty of opportunities for singalong fun and good-natured laughs. ~ Johnny Loftus

Alongside backseat crowd-pleasers like "Frere Jacques," "She'll Be Comin' Round the Mountain," and "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" (here performed in the round) are original songs describing different fun things to do as you travel. "Mother Goose Songs" (11/10/1998) Children's Various Artists, Madacy DistributionAlso available as part of the 3-CD set CHILDREN'S SING-A-LONG FAVORITES. The Mother Goose Songs edition of the Wonder Kids series presents 21 singalong favorites performed by the Wonder Kids Choir. While the album does tend to bog down in the same sappiness that coats too many children's music releases, the Wonder Kids do turn in some solid performances, especially on the ska-inflected "Shoo Fly" and the singsongy "I'm Bringing Home a Bumble Bee" as well as the timeless classic "I'm a Little Teapot." The standout track is a leadoff version of "Jack and Jill" spiced up with a funky organ break replete with synthesized steel drum fills. Mother Goose Songs' entire 21-track program repeats in split-track format, making singalong sessions easier. A full lyric sheet is also included. ~ Johnny Loftus Mother Goose Songs has an assortment of familiar and favorite nursery rhymes, including "Jack and Jill," "B-I-N-G-O, " "Itsy Bitsy Spider, " "Peas Porridge Hot" and "Hey Diddle Diddle." ~ John Bush
