The trouble is, the Avatar is an immature 12-year-old boy called Aang, who would rather wander the world having fun-filled adventures than settle down and face his heroic destiny. As the action heats up, Aang's search for the Fire Lord leads him to some unexpected places.
Bolt [DVD]
In this 2008 computer-animated Disney film, an adorable dog named Bolt (voiced by John Travolta) has been trained to believe that he has superpowers, and that his young owner, Penny (Miley Cyrus), is in perpetual peril, thanks to the schemes of the dastardly Dr. Calico (Malcolm McDowell). However, the loving and protective Bolt and his human companion are really actors in a popular TV show, a production that goes to great lengths to make sure its star pooch remains in the dark about his fictitious life. When Bolt is accidentally transported off his show's Hollywood lot, he must find his way back home and contend with his not-so-super reality, aided by a scrappy alley cat (Susie Essman) and a very enthusiastic hamster (Mark Walton). Helmed by animation vets and first-time feature directors Byron Howard and Chris Williams, BOLT benefits from executive producer John Lasseter's sterling Pixar touch, often echoing themes of that beloved company's canon, particularly 1995's groundbreaking TOY STORY. Although BOLT doesn't quite hit Pixar heights, it stands out as one of Disney's best early-21st-century offerings, thanks in large part to its title character, who is beautifully rendered and endearingly portrayed by Travolta. A fun movie that will particularly delight elementary-school children, BOLT is excellent family fare and easily one of the finest dog-themed films in cinema history.

Garfield the Movie (Follow Along Edition) [DVD]
The long-running, popular comic strip about the fat and lazy cat named Garfield comes to life with this live-action Hollywood comedy. Based on characters created by Jim Davis, the film tells the story of this supremely spoiled pet, who wants the affection of everyone around him, only he wants it on his own terms. Trouble arises one day when, under the influence of the beautiful veterinarian Liz (Jennifer Love Hewitt), Garfield's owner Jon (Breckin Meyer) stuns him by bringing home a cuddly dog, Odie. Jealous at the attention Odie is receiving, Garfield locks Odie out of the house. Odie runs away and when he's kidnapped by the evil television personality Happy Chapman (Stephen Tobolowsky), Garfield realizes his mistake, and embarks on a brave mission to rescue his new housemate. Bill Murray is a perfect choice to provide the loveable voice behind the computer-animated cat. Director Peter Hewitt keeps the story moving along at a clipped pace, which will ensure that children's attention spans won't be tested. Breezy and charming, GARFIELD is a nostalgic return to the past for older viewers who grew up with the fuzzy feline, and an engaging introduction for younger audiences who are meeting him for the very first time.

THE LION KING TRIOLOGY features the adventures of a young lion cub whose evil uncle usurps his father's crown and lets hyenas overrun the kingdom. In THE LION KING, Simba dodges danger, befriends some oddball characters, and wanders the Earth until he can take over the throne. The film won two Academy Awards, including Best Original Score and Best Original Song (Elton John and Tim Rice: "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?"). In the direct-to-video sequel, THE LION KING 2, majestic jungle king Simba prepares his daughter, Kiara, to inherit the throne of the Pride Lands. While out roaming the countryside, she meets Kovu, who has been chosen by the defeated Outland Pride to destroy Simba. The two lions thwart the plan when they realize their union may be the key to resolving the two warring Prides. In the hysterical prequel, THE LION KING 1 1/2, some of the gang reunites to explain how events unfolded from their perspectives. Packed with funny, behind-the-scenes stories, Timon the meerkat and Pumbaa the warthog explain how King Mufasa introduced baby Simba to the jungle. In addition to the new spin on this timeless story, there's a catchy new Elton John song ("That's All I Need") to go with it. Among the famous voices featured in this trio are Whoopie Goldberg, Cheech Marin, James Earl Jones, Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane, Jeremy Irons, Julie Kavner, and Jerry Stiller.

Rugrats Go Wild (Includes Both Full Frame & Widescreen Versions) [DVD]
RUGRATS meet THE WILD THORNBERRYS in this Nickelodeon crossover adventure that features characters from both of the wildly popular animated series. The Pickles family of RUGRATS decides to take a jungle cruise vacation that ends up in disaster. Shipwrecked on a seemingly deserted island, the babies are separated from their parents and must fend for themselves under the leadership of Tommy Pickles (the voice of E.G. Daily). Unbeknownst to Tommy, his idol--naturalist and television explorer Sir Nigel Thornberry (Tim Curry)--is also on the island with his family to film a documentary on the rarely seen white leopard, Siri (rocker Chrissie Hynde). Lost in the jungle, the young RUGRATS kids meet the Thornberry daughters, Debbie (Danielle Harris) and Eliza (Lacey Chabert), whose magical ability to talk to animals makes it possible to converse with Spike (Bruce Willis), the Pickles family dog. But Spike has lost his sense of smell, thanks to jungle allergies, and isn't much help in finding their way--he bumbles along, cracking crude jokes with the help of the film's special interactive scratch-and-sniff "Odorama" feature. Hysterical but witless, Spike is no match for the leopard Siri, and soon everyone is in danger of becoming her next meal as they race around the jungle in search of their parents. Devo frontman Mark Mothersbaugh composed the film's original score, which includes the duet "Big Bad Cat," sung by Hynde and Willis.
Wall-E [DVD]
Even for Pixar, this might be a first: an animated film that contains not only a fully realized world as photorealistic as it is teeming with wonder, but also the Gargantuan themes and visuals of 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, the kind of stripped-down sad-clown pathos reserved for classic Buster Keaton comedies, and one of the most moving love stories in a long time. Director Andrew Stanton kicked up the visual acuity of an already-stellar Pixar Studios in 2003 with his reflective, refractive, color-shimmery realization of FINDING NEMO's oceanic world, which genuinely felt as though it spanned the entire earth. Now, with WALL-E, Stanton replaces an estranged journeyer of an apprehensively fishy disposition with a curious and love-struck robotic one, allowing the quest for eternal love to extend from a desolate, dust-covered, palpably polluted future Earth and into an even more mysterious abyss: the far reaches of outer space. With virtually no dialogue, WALL-E's neatly contained, eerily vaudevillian first act introduces the tragic robot of the title. Whirring amid dilapidated skyscrapers and equally tall compacted trash heaps, he's the last living thing on Earth (aside from a little cockroach friend). WALL-E has developed a tender and inquisitive personality doing what he was built to do--allocate and dispose of human waste--day in and day out for the past 700 years simply because no one turned him off when the human race left the now-hostile planet. Soon though, the directive-oriented automaton Eve comes crashing into WALL-E's life from above, immediately becoming the object of his infatuation. At the drop of a hat, the little guy follows her back into the dangerous unknown, where the sight of two robots gliding through the cosmic ether, dancing via fire-extinguisher propulsion, joins the many memorable moments of a deceptively simple, expansively romantic story.
