"A Piece of My Passion" (01/17/2006) Gospel Bynum, Juanita, Flow RecordsPersonnel: Juanita Bynum (vocals); Myron Williams (vocals); Dave Cleveland (guitar); Craig Neilsen (bass guitar); Scott Williamson (drums). Gospel vocalist Juanita Bynum is committed to praising the Lord, and her unrestrained energy comes through wonderfully on 2006's A PIECE OF MY PASSION. Although she adds the occasional unusual flourish to her music (see the touches of Vocoder on the opening track, "Break Forth"), Bynum expresses her faith with fairly straightforward, though formidable, gospel fervor. And, naturally, the inclusion of a bold backing choir perfectly enhances tracks like "You Are Great," "Jesus, What a Wonder," and other celebratory songs. Not even the staunchest music skeptic expected A Piece of My Passion, Juanita Bynum's third album, to become the gospel smash it did in 2006. The two-disc set topped Billboard's Top Gospel Albums chart for weeks, and it wasn't long until Bynum scored for herself her first gold album. It was an impressive feat no matter how you looked at it: Bynum's day job isn't music, the album was released independently, and there was no blockbuster marketing plan behind it. Instead, the flocks who bought A Piece of My Passion did so based on Bynum's multimedia appeal: she's a self-proclaimed prophetess, best-selling author, speaker, televangelist...and now bona fide contemporary gospel singer. But the thing with Passion is how little of it actually is gospel music. Opener "Break Forth Praise" reminds one of a Sunday morning shout session all right, but from there on out the album takes a dramatic turn. Unexpectedly, Bynum turns into an adult contemporary balladeer, as one song after the next consists of sumptuous, densely orchestrated pop numbers large on sentiment and zeal -- think "Wind Beneath My Wings"-era Bette Midler gone inspirational. Curiously, many of the songs come from unlikely sources, like "Above All Else," a song written by U.K. worship leaderVicky Beeching but attributed mistakenly to CCM-er Rebecca St. James in the liner notes (on a similar note, some songs penned by Hillsong Australia songwriters are credited to Hillsong, not to the songwriters themselves). This adds sloppiness to a set that, while heartfelt, it's ultimately too long and overdone to the point of exhaustion. A Piece of My Passion probably makes for a decent post-conference souvenir for those lining up to see Bynum, but in practice, it's far from being the homerun its chart positioning lets on. ~ Andree Farias

"Casting Crowns" (10/07/2003) Gospel Casting Crowns, ReunionCasting Crowns: Mark Hall (vocals); Hector Cervantes, Juan Devevo (guitar, background vocals); Melodee Devevo (violin, background vocals); Megan Garrett (accordion, keyboards, background vocals); Chris Huffman (bass); Andy Williams (drums). Producers: Steven Curtis Chapman, Mark Miller. Recorded at Zoo Studio, Franklin, Tennessee and In The Dark Studio, Decatur, Georgia. Personnel: Mark Hall (vocals); Rob Graves (guitar); Chris Mosher (strings, keyboards, programming); Bernie Herms, Jonathan Yudkin (strings). Recording information: Glow In The Dark Studio, Decatur, GA; Oxford Sound; Zoo Studio, Franklin, TN. Photographer: Russ Harrington. In September 2003, pop/adult contemporary group Casting Crowns released their self-titled debut. After hearing one of their independent projects, Sawyer Brown's Mark Miller signed the band -- composed of members Mark Hall (lead vocals), Chris Huffman (bass), Melodee DeVevo (violin/vocals), Juan DeVevo (guitars/vocals), Andy Williams (drums), Megan Garrett (keys/vocals), and Hector Cervantes (guitars/vocals) -- to the label he founded, Beach Street Records. The album is comparable to releases by CCM veteran Steven Curtis Chapman, Caedmon's Call, and Phillips, Craig & Dean. The project, produced by Miller and Chapman, features ten tracks aimed at encouraging and challenging the body of Christ. "If We Are the Body" examines the inner circles within churches that can leave newcomers feeling unwelcome, while "Voice of Truth" speaks of obeying God despite fear. Additional songs include "Who Am I" and "What If His People Prayed." ~ Ashleigh Kittle Slater Christian rock music's detractors often cite the eternally sunny, feel-good "I'm okay, you're okay" attitude of many CCM albums as a quality antithetical to real rock & roll. While Casting Crowns certainly offer their fair share of optimistic praise, the group also takes a page from the original 1960's San Francisco Jesus Freak movement's aggressively evangelical book. On several songs, lead vocalist/lyricist Mark Hall quite directly points out the disparity between the Bible's teaching and the world's shortcomings, calling out all manners of hypocrisy, materialism, and cowardice, and then demanding an explanation. This unusually forceful message is framed in an appropriately bombastic arena-rock sound that recalls the heyday of bands like Asia and Kansas. In addition, Hall's voice is a powerful tool perfectly suited to throwing around a little fire and brimstone, often sounding like a cross between Nickelback's Chad Kroeger and Ronnie Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd. A refreshingly unabashed statement of Christian fundamentalism in the literal sense of the term, CASTING CROWNS offers an energetic and tuneful missive.

"Lifesong" (08/30/2005) Gospel Casting Crowns, ReunionCasting Crowns: Mark Hall (vocals); Megan Garrett, Andy Williams, Hector Cervantes, Juan DeVevo, Melodee DeVevo, Chris Huffman. One of the brightest spots on the CCM map in 2005, Lifesong was powered by a second dose of Mark Hall's earnestly challenging worship themes and a penchant for reflective pop. The Florida band's sophomore album was the number two best-selling Christian record in 2005. It nearly went gold after four months in release and came a mere 20,000 units short of overcoming Switchfoot's Nothing Is Sound for the top spot. The mega-hit title track seemed ubiquitous for months on end, culminating in a pair of Dove Awards for Pop/Contemporary Album of the Year and Group of the Year. Hall's artistic balladry buoyed other hits, including "Does Anybody Hear Her," the story of a wayward young woman and the church masses who unrighteously judge her rather than reach out. This type of "painful but true" storytelling never seems heavy-handed, which may explain the CD's runaway success. Listeners seemed to take comfort in the Scripture-based calls to action that challenged churchgoers to admit their shortcomings. Songwriting credits include Nichole Nordeman on "Stained Glass Masquerade." From start to finish, the album showcases songwriting that is consistent, polished, and potent, furthering the septet's reputation as one of Christian music's most popular acts of the 21st century. ~ Jared Johnson CCM group Casting Crowns build on the powerful indie-rock sound of their first album with this 2005 follow-up. Like their self-titled debut, LIFESONG is full of declarations of Christian faith set to music that would sound right at home on MTV and mainstream rock radio. LIFESONG widens Casting Crowns' thematic palette, by mixing in attacks on hypocrisy ("Stained Glass Masquerade") and politics ("While You Were Sleeping"), and meditations on familiar parables ("Prodigal"), among the songs of straightforward praise. Add to these themes sharp, accessible arrangements and the stirring singing of lead vocalist Mark Hall and you've got a contemporary pop-rock record of substance.

Arrangers: Fred Hammond; Ivan "Orthodox" Barias; Juanita Wynn; Steve "Supe" White; Johnnie "Smurf" Smith. Detroit vocalist Fred Hammond has danced skillfully on that gloriously blurred line between gospel and sweet soul music for decades, whether solo or with his group Commissioned. Hammond's knack for letting the spirit resound in his vocals has earned him a well-deserved following. The energetic SOMETHIN' 'BOUT LOVE adds to his catalogue of energetic records with a slate of inspired, groove-laden odes to salvation. Hammond is also a skillful songwriter, co-penning most of the album's tunes, including the deft, intricate single "Celebrate (He Lives)." Brian McKnight and Marvin L. Winans join him for a lustrous trio on the undeniably catchy "Lord We Need Your Love." Hammond's closest musical cousin in the secular world is Stevie Wonder, a connection accentuated when he ably covers Wonder's "Love's in Need." Hammond's records craftily interweave R&B and inspirational music, and SOMETHIN' 'BOUT LOVE continues that tradition.
