After 1982's Age to Age and 1984's Straight Ahead went gold despite distribution restricted mainly to Christian bookstores, Grant's management forged a distribution deal with major independent A&M Records for Unguarded, and the album was backed with a promotional campaign and national tour in keeping with a front-line pop act. Grant's producer, Brown Bannister, had been listening carefully to the pop charts throughout her career, and here he seemed determined to give her the kind of sound that would compete successfully on the secular airwaves of the day. For the mid-'80s, that meant synthesizers, programmed drums, and more synthesizers. And Bannister succeeded. It was easy to imagine the tracks on Unguarded being played alongside hits by the Cars, Duran Duran, and Thompson Twins on pop radio. What also made that transition easier was the only lightly spiritual content of the lyrics. In song after song, Grant (who contributed to seven of the ten tunes, mostly writing words) and her collaborators described life as a struggle and suggested encouragement; if you listened carefully, words like "God," "Jesus," "holy," and "pray" might turn up once per song, or might be only implied by context. In her earnest breathy voice, Grant instructed her fans that they'd better "Wise Up," "Fight," and know "Who to Listen To" (and who not to listen to), but, as those fans bopped along to the synthesized beats, they could be forgiven for missing most of the Christian message if they didn't consult the lyric sheet. As a result, Unguarded worked as intended, producing a Top 40 hit in "Find a Way" and reaching the Top 40 of the LP chart itself. And, as would become apparent, that was only the beginning. ~ William Ruhlmann

"Rock of Ages...Hymns & Faith" (05/03/2005) Gospel Grant, Amy, Word DistributionPersonnel: Amy Grant (vocals); Vince Gill (vocals, acoustic guitar, mandolin); Burton Grant (spoken vocals); Dean Parks (electric guitar, slide guitar); Will Owlsey (electric guitar); Richard Bennett (arch guitar, cavaquinho); Stuart Duncan (fiddle); John Catchings (cello); Jim Horn (tenor saxophone, horns); John Jarvis (piano, Wurlitzer piano); John Hobbs (Fender Rhodes piano, Hammond b-3 organ, synthesizer); Willie Weeks (double bass, bass guitar); Chad Cromwell (drums); Jenny Gill, Andrea Zonn, The Fairfield Four, Bekka Bramlett, Billy Thomas, The Brazos River Mountain Boys (background vocals). Few Contemporary Christian artists have walked the tightrope between the secular and the devout as well as Georgia-born singer Amy Grant, and none have achieved her level of mainstream success. With her distinctive brand of joyous, upbeat songs of love, Grant repeatedly reached the heights of the pop charts during the 1980s, '90s, and beyond. However, Grant has a more reverent side to her aesthetic, as evinced by the HYMNS & FAITH series. ROCK OF AGES, the second of these records, finds the singer exploring many of her favorite songs of worship, both solemn and uplifting, on an album that flows with the energy of an old-fashioned revival. Grant's stirring vocals are suited perfectly for old-school bluegrass, and it's on this note that she opens the record with a dramatic interpretation of "Anywhere with Jesus." She artfully skips over to a more modern CCR bent with the charismatic "Carry You." ROCK OF AGES hits a peak when Grant follows an inspired medley of classics with a breathtakingly earnest rendition of the title track in duet with her husband, country artist Vince Gill. Grant sings with a spirited grace, and ROCK OF AGES captures her at her most devotionally reflective.

"A Christmas Album [Remaster]" (09/18/2007) Gospel Grant, Amy, Sparrow RecordsAmy Grant: Michael W. Smith (synthesizer). Personnel: Amy Grant (background vocals); Dean Parks, Gary Chapman , Jon Goin (acoustic guitar); Gary Shapman (pedal steel guitar); The Martyn Ford Orchestra (horns); Micheal W. Smith (piano); Shane Keister (Fender Rhodes piano); Mike Brignardello (bass guitar); Paul Leim (drums); Victor Feldman, Lenny Castro (percussion); Hollywood Presbyterian Choir, Tamara Champlin, Bill Champlin, Carmen Twillie (background vocals). At the age of 22, Amy Grant took another step in her career by issuing her first Christmas album in 1983. It was a logical-enough release for a Christian performer, but also one that suggested she was an established headliner, an artist whose versions of standards like "The Christmas Song" and "Little Town" (aka "O Little Town of Bethlehem") would be interesting to listeners because she was singing them. In her carefully planned march to mass popularity, the album represented at least one tentative outreach in a musical direction Grant would not pursue. The leadoff track, "Tennessee Christmas," found her husband and co-writer, Gary Chapman, playing a pedal steel guitar on a song that seemed intended to probe the country market and that actually earned some country radio play. But despite being a scion of the Nashville aristocracy (i.e., the wealthy families that long predated the rise of country music in the city), Grant was never really a country artist, and the rest of the album, cut at James William Guercio's Caribou Ranch studio complex, reflected the increasing influence of West Coast pop on her sound, with Los Angeles studio aces like Lenny Castro, Bill Champlin, Victor Feldman, Richard Page, and Dean Parks among the credits. Also increasing his influence was songwriter/keyboardist Michael W. Smith, who contributed such songs as "Emmanuel," a synthesizer-heavy pop/rock track that could have fit on one of Grant's regular albums. So could some of the other material, in fact. A Christmas Album was a record for the audience Grant had attracted with her 1982 breakthrough (and about to be gold) LP, Age to Age, an audience of Christian rock fans attracted by her personal approach to faith. It looked forward to her straddling of secular and CCM music, and as her star rose, it sold well perennially, eventually achieving multi-platinum status, helping associate Grant with the Christmas season as she went on to record more seasonal albums and tape holiday specials. ~ William Ruhlmann
