Stax Profiles [4/25] *
"Stax Profiles" (04/25/2006) Gospel Staple Singers (The), Fantasy Records (USA)The Staple Singers: Roebuck "Pops" Staples (vocals, guitar); Yvonne Staples, Cleotha Staples, Mavis Staples, Pervis Staples (vocals). Additional personnel include: Eddie Hinton, Steve Cropper (guitar); Marvell Thomas (keyboards); Donald "Duck" Dunn (bass guitar). The Staple Singers' trio of major chart successes, the inspirational "I'll Take You There," "Respect Yourself," and "If You're Ready (Come Go With Me)," are only the tip of the iceberg of this collection, which also includes the gospel group's version of the Band's "The Weight" and Sly Stone's "Everyday People." Reflecting the major business changes in the late 1960s at Stax Records, the family recorded at Muscle Shoals in Alabama, and the freshness of the backing musicians' approach to their material is reflected in the supple reggae tinge to many of the rhythm tracks.

Best of The Staple Singers (Stax) by The Staple Singers (CD - 1986)
"Best of The Staple Singers (Stax)" (1986) Gospel Staple Singers (The), Stax (USA)The Staple Singers include: Roebuck "Pops" Staples (vocals, guitar); Mavis Staples (vocals); Yvonne Staples, Cleotha Staples (vocals). Includes liner notes by Lee Hildebrand. Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (1986, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). Of the many Staple Singers compilations, the 1986 set on the Stax label is the most concise overview of the brief period where the family group weren't just gospel superstars, but a regular presence on the pop and R&B charts. BEST OF THE STAPLE SINGERS includes all seven of the group's Top 40 hits between 1971 and 1974, including the Number One smash "I'll Take You There." (The group's second and final Number One single, the 1975 movie theme "Let's Do It Again," is not included, since it was recorded for Curtis Mayfield's Curtom label after Stax's dissolution.) Also included are a handful of the gospel showcases for lead singer Mavis Staples that first made the group's name, along with sanctified covers of Otis Redding's "(Sittin' on the) Dock of the Bay" and the Band's "The Weight." BEST OF THE STAPLE SINGERS is a basic, no-nonsense, 16-track overview that does the job for casual fans, but it will also serve as a springboard for those who wish to explore further into the group's enormous catalogue.

"Finale Act One [Remaster]" (04/04/2006) Gospel Tri-City Singers (The), EMI GospelThe Tri-City Singers: Anita Wilson, Erica McCullough, Blanche McAllister, Michael Smith, Lisa Jones (vocals). Recording information: The Tabernacle, Atlanta, GA. Gospel artist Donald Lawrence gave his final performance with the Tri-City Singers at the end of 2005 in Atlanta, Georgia. A double-disc set comprising an audio CD and a DVD of the concert, FINALE ACT ONE shows Lawrence and the Singers at their inspirational best. Sweeping and rousing in the gospel tradition, but with just the right amount of contemporary R&B to sweeten the mix, Lawrence and company put on quite a show, making this a good bet for fans of high-energy praise and worship music.

Swing Low by The Staple Singers (CD - 03/14/2006)
"Swing Low" (03/14/2006) Gospel Staple Singers (The), Collectables RecordsOriginally released on Vee-Jay (5014). Not to be confused with their later Vee-Jay album SWING LOW SWEET CHARIOT, 1961's SWING LOW is a vintage early Staple Singers set. It hails from the days when Roebuck "Pops" Staples and his daughters were rising stars in the world of black gospel and not the R&B-pop hit-makers they would become in the '70s. The album is a roughly equal mix of soulful, sanctified originals and traditional gospel classics like "Born In Bethlehem" and, naturally, "Swing Low Sweet Chariot." SWING LOW is also an important album for rock fans of a historical bent, since the last track, Pops's "This May Be The Last Time," is the song that directly inspired the Rolling Stones' single "The Last Time" a couple of years later. The album's startlingly direct sound, featuring little other than Pops' cutting, echo-drenched guitar and the sisters' pure, thrilling voices, makes it a classic of the Staple Singers' early sound.
