"Villancicos Navide?os" (09/09/2003) Gospel Various Artists, Benson RecordsChristmas Carols is a collection of holiday songs designed for children. All of the songs are sung by a group of children -- the Cedarmont Kids -- and are presented in a straightforward, bland fashion. This album is not for adults, but it does work well as a children's album. The CD even repeats, with the vocals only in one stereo channel for singalong purposes after the album ends. This really is good for children (although the message is very religious and may turn off parents who do not want to emphasize that aspect of Christmas) and is easily avoidable for parents, so this is recommended with a mild warning to non-religious families. ~ Bradley Torreano This companion disc to Cantos De Navidad by Cedarmont (a company specializing in Spanish language Bible-based musical audiovisual materials for children) is the far superior one for two reasons: each song is recognizable, despite the fact that "Joy to the World" somehow translates to "Al Mundo Paz" (a peaceful world), and all the songs are choir-based rather than featuring very poor soloists. The arrangements and production by Sue and Mike Gay are simple but effective piano-, chime-, and horn-based number. After the initial 15 tracks, the song sequence repeats with vocal and instrumental tracks on different channels so that children can sing along without the recorded vocals. This possibility makes this disc worth the listen even for English speaking audiences. ~ Jonathan Widran

"I Could Sing of Your Love Forever: Kids [2004]" (09/07/2004) Gospel Various Artists, Worship TogetherPersonnel includes: Hannah Reddick, Brandon Harris, Jadyn Strand, Graham Keen, Paul Martin, Gabe Pigg, Landon Pigg, Ben Byler, Sarah Valley, Megan Trozer (vocals); Matt Huesmann, Jerry McPherson, Dave Cleveland, Joh Hammond, Phil Madiera, Eric Darken. Recorded at Darkhorse and The Matinee Studios, Franklin, Tennessee. Digitally remastered using HDCD technology. This is part of Worship Together Records "I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever" series. Personnel: Dave Cleveland (acoustic guitar); Jerry McPherson (electric guitar); Matt Huesmann (keyboards); John Hammond (drums); Eric Darken (percussion). Audio Mixer: Tom Laune. Recording information: Darkhorse Studio, Franklin, TN. Arranger: Matt Huesmann. The highly successful worship music series I COULD SING OF YOUR LOVE FOREVER includes a number of volumes dedicated to spreading a Christian message of faith while entrancing the ear with an agreeable sonic embrace. This entry in the series is no different in that sense, but it's geared directly towards youngsters. Sung by and for kids, these tracks feature group vocals, but the effect is not so much that of a choir, but rather a party. The reason is mostly the accompanying music--effervescent pop-rock full of high-energy hooks, bearing echoes of everything from Hanson to Hootie & the Blowfish. It seems like the perfect way to tune kids who are usually glued to pop radio into the spiritual mission of the I COULD SING OF YOUR LOVE FOREVER discs.
