Reflecting the thin line between sacred and secular music that's particularly prevalent in the world of soul, THE FIGHTING TEMPTATIONS soundtrack modernizes this dichotomy, which has been tackled by legends like Prince, Sam Cooke, and Al Green. Given that the film's story is based on a plot about a crooked ad exec forming a choir in order to collect an inheritance, there's plenty of gospel music packed into these 15 songs. The legendary Shirley Caesar wrote and performs on both "I'm Getting Ready," an uplifting solo showcase for Sounds of Blackness mouthpiece Ann Nesby, and the equally stirring "The Stone," which features the two ladies doing some major roof-raising. With Matthew Knowles serving as the executive soundtrack album producer, it's no surprise that daughter Beyonce is the star of the film and a featured performer throughout this collection. When Beyonce's not tearing up the party jam "Fighting Temptation" alongside Missy Elliott, MC Lyte, and Free, she's tucking into the slow jam "I Know" with day job Destiny's Child and flying solo on fine interpretations of "Fever" and "Swing Low Sweet Chariot." Other stellar covers include Faith Evans turning the disco nugget "Heaven Knows" into her own, and the O'Jays making like the Persuasions on "Loves Me Like a Rock."

"Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit" (11/09/1993) Gospel Original Soundtrack, Hollywood RecordsProducers include: Marc Shaiman, JOE, Keith Miller, Mervyn Warren, C&C Music Factory. Engineers include: Joel Moss, Chris Trevett, Tony Shepperd. Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit wasn't as inspired as the first Sister Act, so it should be no surprise that the soundtrack to the sequel isn't either. It features some oldies -- both originals and some re-recorded by Whoopi Goldberg and the film's cast of nuns -- and incidental music. Neither the oldies or the incidental music are of much interest when separated from the movie. ~ David Jehnzen

"Touched by an Angel: The Christmas Album" (09/01/2001) Gospel Original Soundtrack, 550 MusicProducers include: Fred Hammond, Michael Omartian, Kirk Franklin, Brent Bourgeois, Mark Heimermann. Liner Note Author: Martha Williamson. Arrangers: Fred Hammond; Kyle Lehning; Mark Heimermann; Randy Travis; Ronn Huff; Barry Eastmond; Brent Bourgeois. THE CHRISTMAS ALBUM is a collection of Christian-centered holiday favorites and uplifting originals, all of which are rendered in the spirit of the heralded CBS television program "Touched by an Angel." Guest artists include Amy Grant, Crystal Lewis, Donna Summer, Collin Raye, Jaci Vasquez, and Della Reese, whose soulful and choir-backed "If I Can Dream" provides a positively earth-shaking opening to the collection. Donna Summer sounds as fresh as ever on her original Yuletide composition "Christmas Spirit." The silver-toned voice of Kenny Lattimore reassures the dejected as to the power of miracles in the soupy but confident "Miracles." Amy Grant's fans should swoon over "Breath of Heaven," which tells the story of the trials of the Virgin Mary. Randy Travis' North Carolina drawl paints sonic circles of red and white around the touching "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen." The album comes to a calming conclusion with "An Irish Blessing," in which program star Roma Downey delivers a reassuring benediction, complete with Irish brogue. Those taken by the spirit of the music on THE CHRISTMAS ALBUM may also want to check out the equally excellent TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL: THE ALBUM.

"Jesus: The Epic Mini-Series [Original Television Soundtrack]" (03/28/2000) Gospel Original Soundtrack, Capitol Records (USA)Compilation producers: Bill Hearn, Eddie DeGarmo, Evan Lamberg, Mike Curb. Includes liner notes by Douglas Kaine McKelvey. Composer: Patrick Williams. Audio Mixer: Charles Pollard. Liner Note Author: Douglas Kaine McKelvey. Recording information: Studio X, Seattle, WA. Director: Roger Young. Arrangers: Edwin McCain; Mark Hammond. You've never heard the Good News delivered quite like this before. As the title suggests, this soundtrack to the JESUS TV-Movie does not confine itself strictly to the songs included in the movie itself. Consequently, the producers of the album were free to go a bit further afield in their song selections. While Patrick Williams' opening theme seems appropriately full of pomp and circumstance, the bulk of this disc is populated by a distinctly more secular, contemporary aesthetic. The spirituality inherent in Earth, Wind & Fire's classic "Shining Star" is brought to the fore in Yolanda Adams' version, while Christian rockers DC Talk similarly recontextualize Norman Greenbaum's hippie chestnut "Spirit in the Sky." Ironically, secular pop-rock stars Hootie & the Blowfish contribute one of the most gospel-influenced cuts, "City on a River." Things close on a transcendent note with Sarah Brightman's angelic delivery of "Pie Jesu."

"Music Inspired by the Chronicles of Narnia" (09/27/2005) Gospel Original Soundtrack, Sparrow RecordsAs part of the broad marketing effort ramping up to the release of the first film in the Chronicles of Narnia series, MUSIC INSPIRED BY THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA is one of the first merchandising tie-ins that makes plain the series' rooting in Christian theology. A collection of eleven new songs by popular Contemporary Christian Music artists like Stephen Curtis Chapman and Jars of Clay, the album is only tangentially related to the movie. Still, it contains previously unreleased material by many of the biggest stars in mainstream CCM, and is therefore essential to fans of the style, and perhaps even the film.

"The Visit [Original Soundtrack]" (07/26/2004) Gospel Original Soundtrack, Concord JazzIncludes liner notes by Jordan Walker-Pearlman. The motion picture soundtrack for the movie The Visit is adeptly crafted and captures the mood of the movie through dramatic musical elements. The use of several musical genres, including gospel, jazz, R&B, vocals, and instrumentals, lend credibility to each scene with imagery carefully incorporated to deliver the right sensibility. Wallace Rooney's performance of "Little Prince" is a standout as is Niki Harris' on "Eye Is on the Sparrow." Accompanied by her father, the great Gene Harris, her vocals delivers the emotional impact of their respective scene sequences. The music supervision is good and should inspire those interested in the use of various musical genres as additional characters to resolve story structure, development, and resolutions. ~ Paula Edelstein

"Gospel [Zyx]" (12/06/2005) Gospel Original Soundtrack, ZYX MusicAlthough the lineup on this gospel compilation is stellar, the particular selections are the somewhat less inspired, showier renditions of the included performers' catalogs. On the plus side, the greats of both soul gospel and bluegrass gospel are presented together on the same release, which is rare. Included are essential artists such as Mahalia Jackson, the Staple Singers, Bessie Smith, and the Carter Family. The album's highlights also include the Abyssinian Baptist Choir's anointed rendition of "Sweet Jesus" and Mitchell's Christian Singers' "Them Bones." Extra information is not a bad thing, but in an effort to be more thorough and educational, the included book becomes slightly frustrating with commentary on many artists and songs that aren't included. ~ Joslyn Layne

"Jubilant" (04/07/1998) Gospel Original Soundtrack, Sony Music Distribution (USA)Personnel: Jubilant Sykes (vocals); Don Vappie (guitar); David Low (cello); David McKelvy (harmonica); Terence Blanchard (trumpet); Mulgrew Miller (piano); Reginald Veal (bass); Troy Davis (drums, tambourine); Gary Murphy, Wesley Holland (background vocals). Recorded at Capitol Recording Studios, Los Angeles, California on May 26-30, 1997. Includes liner notes by Terence Blanchard, Patrick Russ and Shirley Russ. Personnel: Jubilant Sykes (vocals); Wesley Holland, Gary Murphy (vocals, background vocals); Don Vappie (guitar); David Low (cello); David McKelvy (harmonica); Terence Blanchard (trumpet); Mulgrew Miller (piano); Troy Davis (drums, tambourine). Liner Note Authors: Patrick Russ; Shirley Russ. Recording information: Capitol Recording Studios, Los Angeles, CA (05/26/1997-05/30/1997). Photographers: Dana Ross; Mark Hanauer. Arranger: Terence Blanchard. Working with trumpeter/composer/arranger Terence Blanchard, vocalist Jubilant Sykes revives and reworks the sound of traditional African-American spirituals and hymns. These hardly sound dated, since Sykes and Blanchard have found the core of the songs and given them fresh, unpredictable, jazzy arrangements. Throughout, Sykes sings with precision and passion, making Jubilant a thoroughly impressive and original debut. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
