"Jesus: The Epic Mini-Series [Original Television Soundtrack]" (03/28/2000) Gospel Original Soundtrack, Capitol Records (USA)Compilation producers: Bill Hearn, Eddie DeGarmo, Evan Lamberg, Mike Curb. Includes liner notes by Douglas Kaine McKelvey. Composer: Patrick Williams. Audio Mixer: Charles Pollard. Liner Note Author: Douglas Kaine McKelvey. Recording information: Studio X, Seattle, WA. Director: Roger Young. Arrangers: Edwin McCain; Mark Hammond. Beverly Hills Cop was the first album billed as "Music from the Motion Picture Soundtrack" rather than "Original Motion Picture Soundtrack," with a note in small print on the back cover stating, "Contains additional songs that are not in the film." Ever since, "soundtrack" albums have become little more than marketing tie-ins to sell what are in fact various-artists albums. This brings us to an album with the unfortunate title Music From and Inspired by "Jesus: The Epic Mini-Series." No one seems to have realized that there's something just a little sacrilegious about reducing Christ -- usually referred to as, for example, "Jesus the Savior" or "Jesus, the Son of God" -- to "Jesus: The Epic Mini-Series." Scheduled for spring sweeps week, Jesus: The Epic Mini-Series was preceded by two "soundtrack" albums released seven weeks in advance of the broadcast. One contained the four-hour teleplay's score, written by Patrick Williams. The other one, Music From and Inspired By, appears to contain almost no music actually heard in the film. It begins with an excerpt from the Williams score and ends with Sarah Brightman's recording of Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Pie Jesu"; in between are ten contemporary pop songs by ten different performers. While the press materials note that pop/rock, country, R&B, and contemporary Christian artists are involved, in practice it all fits into the same genre: adult contemporary. Whether the performer is LeAnn Rimes, Steven Curtis Chapman, Yolanda Adams, 98ø, or Hootie & the Blowfish, the songs all sound like they were written by Diane Warren. One after another, these are bland ballads with lyrics carefully crafted to make it easy to interpret them as being about romantic, not religious love. (The exceptions are two vastly inferior covers.) According to the marketing plan, one of these songs becomes a hit, thus promoting the TV show and making more money for all involved. What would Jesus (Christ, not the epic mini-series) say? ~ William Ruhlmann The original soundtrack to the television movie Jesus features a wide array of pop, soul, and contemporary Christian artists, including Yolanda Adams, Lonestar, Steven Curtis Champman and Jaci Velasquez. LeAnn Rimes' "I Need You," Patrick Williams' "Jesus," Hootie & The Blowfish's "City By A River," 98 Degrees' "The Love That You've Been Looking For" and Michael English's "Heaven To Earth" are among the highlights of this diverse celebration of Jesus Christ, which also includes performances by Sarah Brightman and Edwin McCain. ~ Heather Phares You've never heard the Good News delivered quite like this before. As the title suggests, this soundtrack to the JESUS TV-Movie does not confine itself strictly to the songs included in the movie itself. Consequently, the producers of the album were free to go a bit further afield in their song selections. While Patrick Williams' opening theme seems appropriately full of pomp and circumstance, the bulk of this disc is populated by a distinctly more secular, contemporary aesthetic. The spirituality inherent in Earth, Wind & Fire's classic "Shining Star" is brought to the fore in Yolanda Adams' version, while Christian rockers DC Talk similarly recontextualize Norman Greenbaum's hippie chestnut "Spirit in the Sky." Ironically, secular pop-rock stars Hootie & the Blowfish contribute one of the most gospel-influenced cuts, "City on a River." Things close on a transcendent note with Sarah Brightman's angelic delivery of "Pie Jesu."

"The Passion of Jesus" (06/22/2004) Gospel Caesar, Shirley, Liquid 8The title and cover art of this album -- both more than a little similar to that of 2004's blockbuster film The Passion of the Christ -- prove that there's room for bandwagon-jumping in gospel just as there is in less spiritual forms of pop music. That said, The Passion of Jesus is yet another of Shirley Caesar's effortless-sounding updates of traditional gospel sounds. Though the album remains rooted in the black gospel tradition, synthesizers, drum machines, and other of-the-moment touches are subtly mixed into the arrangements, so that songs like "He's Got a Love That Will Last Forever" sound almost like quiet storm-format R&B love songs, and the funky, hip-hop-influenced "Heavenly Father" swings with an updated version of the '70s soul grooves that Al Green and Willie Mitchell perfected. None of it sounds like a cynical crossover attempt, however, because the focus of the songs is always on Caesar's phenomenal voice and her impassioned delivery of the testifying lyrics. Despite the cash-in suggested by the title and cover, The Passion of Jesus sounds 100 percent sincere. ~ Stewart Mason

"Sleep Sound in Jesus" (02/11/2003) Gospel Card, Michael, Sparrow RecordsIn 2002, SLEEP SOUND IN JESUS was paired with COME TO THE CRADLE and released as a double CD "Platinum Gift Edition." Personnel: Michael Card (vocals, guitar); Phil Naish (keyboards); Alissa Jones Wall (hammered dulcimer); Mark O'Connor (mandolin, mandola, violin); John Catchings (cello); Cynthia Reynolds Wyatt (harp); Buddy Greene (harmonica); Mark Douthit (soprano saxophone); Craig Nelson (bass); Farrell Morris (percussion); Carl Gorodetzky, The Nashville String Machine. Recorded at OmniSound Recording Studios, Quad Studio, Nashville, Tennessee, The Pond, Franklin, Tennessee. Includes liner notes by Michael Card. The 2002 double CD Platinum Gift Edition includes the original SLEEP SOUND IN JESUS album, plus an extra CD that was originally released in 1993 as COME TO THE CRADLE. Sleep Sound in Jesus is exactly what it sounds like -- a gentle, soothing album of Christian lullabies. Michael Card wrote all the songs and performs the vocals with Betsy Hernandez. Ordinarily, having all the songs on an album blend together is a weakness, but for this album, it's a strength. The songs work together to create an atmosphere of calm in the often stormy lives of families with infants. Card uses a light touch, keeping the instruments acoustic and the vocals soft. The album's message of love and belonging is simple and sweet, without the saccharineness of many child-oriented albums. It would be a welcome addition to any family's music collection. ~ Melinda Hill
