"The Lost Recordings of Shirley Caesar: Go Take a Bath" (06/06/2006) Gospel Caesar, Shirley, Calvin RecordsShirley Caesar's records are powerfully executed examples of gospel as a means to an end, and there is no doubt that she is a dynamic performer. But her albums only tell part of the story, for Caesar is more than a performer -- she is also an explosive preacher who uses music as a way to get her message across to her audiences. This gospel sermon was delivered live in 1976, and it features Caesar in her natural habitat speaking, singing, shouting, exhorting, and stirring up an inferno of emotion at a frenzied pace that would make James Brown hang up his dancing shoes. Split into two segments, the first a little over 15 minutes in length and the second nearly nine minutes in length, Caesar's sermon is breathtaking in its onward momentum, and it makes her more mainstream album tracks seem dainty by comparison. Still, it's all pretty exhausting, and isn't exactly casual listening, so while these lost recordings certainly capture Caesar in full flight, they work best as an addendum to her standard releases. ~ Steve Leggett

One of gospel's greatest, along with Mahalia Jackson, Marion Williams, and Dorothy Love Coates, former Caravans star Shirley Caesar has a hugely powerful voice and a preachifying style to go with it. Both are heard to advantage on this nicely rounded collection of material recorded (from the sound of it - Mark Marymont's liner notes make no mention) in her late-'60s heyday. Instrumentation is the classic gospel lineup of organ, piano, bass, and drums, but toward the end of the album, bluesy electric guitar starts to creep into songs like the riffy "Thank You Jesus." Another highlight is "The Operation," an impassioned gospel rap about the visions she had during a heart operation as a child.

"The Passion of Jesus" (06/22/2004) Gospel Caesar, Shirley, Liquid 8The title and cover art of this album -- both more than a little similar to that of 2004's blockbuster film The Passion of the Christ -- prove that there's room for bandwagon-jumping in gospel just as there is in less spiritual forms of pop music. That said, The Passion of Jesus is yet another of Shirley Caesar's effortless-sounding updates of traditional gospel sounds. Though the album remains rooted in the black gospel tradition, synthesizers, drum machines, and other of-the-moment touches are subtly mixed into the arrangements, so that songs like "He's Got a Love That Will Last Forever" sound almost like quiet storm-format R&B love songs, and the funky, hip-hop-influenced "Heavenly Father" swings with an updated version of the '70s soul grooves that Al Green and Willie Mitchell perfected. None of it sounds like a cynical crossover attempt, however, because the focus of the songs is always on Caesar's phenomenal voice and her impassioned delivery of the testifying lyrics. Despite the cash-in suggested by the title and cover, The Passion of Jesus sounds 100 percent sincere. ~ Stewart Mason
