"Sea of Faces" (02/24/2004) Gospel Kutless, BEC RecordingsIncludes bonus CD. Kutless: John Michah, Kyle Mithcell, Ryan Shrout, James Mead, Kyle Zeigler. Recorded at Compound Recording, Seattle, Washington. Personnel: Ryan Clark (vocals). Audio Mixer: J.R. McNeely. Recording information: Compound Studios, Seattle, WA. Photographer: Kris McCaddon. With its self-titled 2002 debut, Kutless came out of nowhere to dominate both Christian rock sales and radio charts. In addition, the band toured relentlessly, playing over 200 shows all over the United States. It comes as no surprise, then, that the group's sophomore effort, SEA OF FACES, sounds like the work of a band both completely relaxed and eager to expand its boundaries. The record explores everything from ultra-heavy, down-tuned angst-rock in the Incubus and Staind vein ("Not What You See," "Let You In") to Toad the Wet Sprocket-esque melancholy power-pop ("Perspectives," "All The Words"). Though much more introspective in tone, the group's exuberant sound at times also recalls 1980s AOR acts like Journey and .38 Special. A catchy, well-played and polished follow-up, SEA OF FACES finds Kutless performing with equal parts passion and professionalism.

"Show Your Bones" (03/28/2006) Oldies Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Interscope Records (USA)Yeah Yeah Yeahs: Karen O (vocals); Nick Zinner (guitar); Brian Chase (drums). Additional personnel: Money Mark (keyboards); Dave Sitek (sampler). SHOW YOUR BONES, the Yeah Yeah Yeah's 2006 sophomore full-length, was one of the most anticipated releases of the year. The band's fiery, unhinged 2003 major-label debut, FEVER TO TELL, yanked the band out of NYC clubs and onto the world stage, and while most of the musical cognoscente anticipated a sonic shake-up of some sort for the sequel, in exactly what direction the YYYs would head was a source of much speculation. Would they follow Liars into the murky depths of willfully alienating avant noise, or would they Liz-Phair themselves right into glossy commercial irrelevance? In fact, it's neither of the above. As tracks like "Gold Lion," "Honeybear," and "Cheated Hearts" show, the band clearly isn't out to ruffle any feathers, but they're also not forsaking the infectious, art-tinged punk that got them where they are. Guitarist Nick Zinner and drummer Brian Chase are spot-on as usual, and Karen O is in lovely, if somewhat restrained, voice throughout. The production is bright and full, and enhances the glammy, anthemic underpinnings of the band's sound. And although it's not going to inspire any future prom themes a la "Maps," SHOW YOUR BONES has strengthened the YYYs claim to being that rarest of animals--a legitimate Top 40 rock band with a genuine artistic sensibility.

"The Fires of Life" (05/25/2004) Gospel Cool Hand Luke, Word DistributionCool Hand Luke: Mark Nicks (vocals, piano, drums, gong); Chris Susi (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Brandon Morgan (acoustic guitar, bass guitar). Personnel: Christine Glass Byrd (vocals); Matt Slocum (cello); Matt Mosley (piano). Additional personnel: Christine Glass Byrd (vocals); Timbre Cierpke (harp); Matt Mosley (piano); Steve Hindalong (drum, tambourine, percussion); Matt Slocum. Audio Mixer: Skye McCaskey. Recording information: Fireside (01/2004-02/2004); Roswell East (01/2004-02/2004); Skye Dog Studios (01/2004-02/2004). Cool Hand Luke's sophomore effort finds the trio more fully integrating the various elements of its sound into a coherent whole, still working in a dreamy, slow to midtempo mode and downplaying obvious hooks in favor of lush, layered textures. Imagine, if you will, an unabashedly Christian version of the Cure, or perhaps a more fleshed-out Red House Painters. The songs were inspired by a particularly difficult year in the life of singer and drummer Mark Nicks, and they tend to deal with issues of anguish and emotional desperation and, finally, a renewal of faith. On "Sequence #3" Nicks revisits a standard doctrinal trope with the repeated line "I never really lived until I died with You," and on songs like "I'm Not Ready" and "Foster" he lays his own conversion process out in sometimes harrowing detail. The degree to which you find the album compelling will depend, in large part, on your willingness to sit through 11 tracks of songs with one overriding lyrical concern, all delivered at one tempo and governed by a single mood. It will also depend on your openness to explicit religiosity, which in this case extends to Bible cross-references in the lyric sheet. Musically, The Fires of Life grows on you; lyrically, you'll either hear it immediately or you probably won't at all. ~ Rick Anderson

Illustrator: Benji Peck. Photographer: Benji Peck. Arrangers: Chris Tomlin; Christy Nockels; David Crowder; George Kingsley; Richard Storrs Willis; Nathan Nockels; Stuart K. Hine; Charlie Hall. This collection of hymns, recorded live in 2003, features melodies that date back as far as the 1830s and centuries-old lyrics. Reworked by musical leaders of the modern worship movement, the set blends the old with the new. The hymn "Phos Hilaron" (which literally means "hilarious light") dates back to the 4th century, and the version on this release was arranged using the 1832 translation. Hearing the crowd singing along shows the power that these artists convey to their listeners, and reveals that their message is getting through loud and clear. Featuring luminaries such as Dave Crowder, Chris Tomlin, and Charlie Hall, these 14 tracks give time-tested odes to faith a pop sensibility that is ideal for a larger audience.

This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Mac Powell (vocals, acoustic guitar); Mark "Anarchy" Lee, Brad Avery (guitar); George Cocchini (acoustic guitar); Monroe Jones (piano, keyboards); Scotty Wilbanks (piano); David Carr (drums, percussion); Ken Lewis (percussion); Geof Barkley, Michael Mellett (background vocals). Audio Mixers: Jim Dineen; Richard Dodd. Recording information: Elmira, NY; Ft. Myers, FL; Philadelphia, PA; Portland, ME; Savannah, GA; Southern Tracks, Atlanta, GA; The Hideout, Franklin, TN. Editor: Jim Dineen. Photographers: Kristin Barlowe; Bernard Sumner; Bill Massey. Arranger: Third Day. Sometimes referred to as the Lynyrd Skynyrd of Christian music, Third Day has always added an engaging down-home feel to its brand of energetic arena rock. On OFFERINGS II, the band continues to refine its signature sound, and in the process offers up one of its strongest efforts. The group's best moments come from lead singer Mac Powell, whose voice ostensibly recalls the faceless hordes of growly grunge baritones (Live's Ed Kowalczyk, Nickelback's Chad Kroeger, Creed's Scott Stapp, etc.), but also has an appealing blue-eyed soul element more characteristic of Paul Weller or Robin Trower Band vocalist Jim Dewar. Powell is at his most stirring on OFFERINGS II's live tracks, which are delivered at full force in front of a wildly appreciative audience. This album shows Third Day to be an undeniably tight, hard-hitting, rock & roll band delivering a sound that simultaneously embraces the heavenly and down to earth.

"Gospels, Spirituals, & Hymns, Vol. 2 [Box]" (08/18/1998) Gospel Jackson, Mahalia, Legacy RecordingsIncluded with this 2 disc box set is a 20-page booklet with liner notes and rare photos. Included with this 2 disc box set is a 20-page booklet with liner notes and rare photos. Personnel: Mahalia Jackson (vocals); A. Hendrickson, Herb Ellis, Art Ryerson (guitar); Edward David Robinson (piano, organ); Mildred Falls (piano); Ralph Jones , A. Goodson, Alfred Miller, B. Preston, Harold Smith, Lilton Mitchell (organ); Gus Johnson, J. Allen Williams, Jr., Hubert Anderson, Shelly Manne, Bunny Shawker (drums). Liner Note Author: Horace Clarence Boyer. Recording information: 11/22/1954-01/31/1969. Ensemble: Falls-Jones Ensemble. Arranger: Mahalia Jackson. The companion to the first double-disc Gospels, Spirituals, & Hymns is an equally compelling, masterful collection of Mahalia Jackson recordings, comprised of 36 songs (including five live tracks) recorded between 1954 and 1969. Both volumes, then, come as close as possible to being the definitive Mahalia Jackson collection. Listening to these recordings is like taking a class in American music history -- Louisiana-born Mahalia Jackson became gospel music's world ambassador, and one can't help but hear traces of rock, doo wop, soul, and blues in these recordings. Highlights include the masterful "How I Got Over," the soaring "How Great Thou Art," and "The Love of God," the gentle "God Is So Good (To Me)," "When I Wake Up in Glory," the hand-clappin' "When the Saints Go Marching In," her earth-shattering medley of "Summertime" and "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child," and her incomparable live rendition of "The Lord's Prayer." This stellar set is a must for any fan of Mahalia Jackson, gospel music, or, for that matter, good, compelling, soul-stirring music, period. ~ Jose F. Promis With its excellent sound, solid compiling work, and lengthy liner notes, the second 2-CD box set of Mahalia Jackson's Columbia recordings is just as essential as the first, Gospels, Spirituals & Hymns. ~ All Music Guide
