Wow: Christmas by Various Artists (CD - 10/01/2002)
"Wow: Christmas" (10/01/2002) Gospel Various Artists, Word EntertainmentEven to those who are completely over the prospect of contemporary pop artists churning out Christmas albums, what could seem more logical than a collection of Yuletide tunes by Christian pop performers? As much of a given as the concept of WOW CHRISTMAS may seem, the first couple of cuts on this two-disc affair may throw listeners for something of a loop. Avalon's version of the standard "Winter Wonderland" offers not the modern pop-rock sound the group is known for, but a swing-jazz version whose jumping horn-driven arrangement may have some folks wondering if the wrong CD was packed into the case, at least until the vocals kick in. Next up, Michael W. Smith takes on "Emmanuel," but instead of his usual pop vocalizing, the bulk of the tune is taken up by traditional choral singing and orchestral arrangement. Some of the tracks here upset the apple cart a bit less--Kirk Franklin's "The Night That Christ Was Born," for example, offers the expected mix of pop, gospel, and R&B--but for the most part, WOW CHRISTMAS offers a consistently fresh take on Christmas music.

Wow 1998: The Year's 30 Top Christian Artists and Songs by Various Artists (CD - 11/04/1997)
"Wow 1998: The Year's 30 Top Christian Artists and Songs" (11/04/1997) Gospel Various Artists, Sparrow RecordsProducers include: Steven Lipson, Regie Hamm, Don Koch, Brown Bannister, Sam Taylor. Christian music has come a long way toward being in tune with current musical trends. The artists on these two discs are young and hip, and are obviously serious musicians. Influences range from grungy minor-key guitar tunes to hip-hop grooves, R&B, funky folk-rock and techno. The news is that televangelists and right-wing fanatics aren't the only ones delivering the Christian message. Though evangelism is the main function of the Christian music industry, these devotional songs, with their modern pop coating, are potentially inspiring to even the least devout of Christians. Highlights include "Overjoyed" by Jars of Clay and "Abba (Father)" by Rebecca St. James.

Wow 2000: The Year's 30 Top Christian Artists and Songs by Various Artists (CD - 10/26/1999)
"Wow 2000: The Year's 30 Top Christian Artists and Songs" (10/26/1999) Gospel Various Artists, Capitol/EMI RecordsThis is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Cassette contains three bonus tracks not found on the CD release. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. This two-disc enhanced-CD set, complete with internet-filtering software, gathers together 30 of the most popular Christian pop songs of 1999. Though the musical focus of these discs is on music from alternative acts like Audio Adrenaline ("Get Down"), Delirious? ("Gravity"), and Plumb ("Stranded,") there is a nice assortment of music from other genres to leaven the mix. The pedal steel-laced "I've Always Loved You," from Third Day, and "Nobody Loves Me Like You," from Jars of Clay lend an inviting roots-rock warmth to the proceedings. Efforts by O.C. Supertones ("Away from You") and The W's ("The Rumor Weed Song") prove that Christian themes pair well with a ska-powered instrumental background. R&B artists are also given an opportunity to voice their affection for Christ, with contributions from Out of Eden ("River"), Anointed ("Revive Us"), and Winans Phase2 "It's Alright (Send Me)." The collection's centerpiece is Steven Curtis Chapman's stirring "Speechless," a song that got its inspiration from an especially life-affirming men's group meeting that Chapman attended.
