The Wicker Man [DVD]
A notoriously troubled production notwithstanding, the controversial cult classic THE WICKER MAN is now regarded as a classic of British cinema. Edward Woodward stars as Sergeant Howie, a naive young police officer sent to Summerisle, a secluded island off the coast of Scotland, to investigate the disappearance of a young girl named Rowan. When he arrives there, he finds a very tight-knit community that is mistrustful and hostile to outsiders. No one is willing to even acknowledge Rowan's disappearance. Soon, Howie begins to realize that the town might, in fact, be a strange pagan cult, one given to unbridled sexuality and possible human sacrifice. Seeking an audience with the oddly civilized Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee), Howie hopes to get to the bottom of the mystery, but instead he finds something more shocking than he could have ever imagined. Written by Anthony Shaffer (SLEUTH, DEATH ON THE NILE), Robin Hardy's eerie film paints a disturbing portrait of an almost prehistoric, multi-deity worshipping society given to bizarre rituals and Bacchanalian excess. Though recognition may have been a long time coming, THE WICKER MAN stands as a strikingly original achievement that is equal parts horror, drama, comedy, and musical.

Hombre [DVD]
An entertaining and wholly different type of western, Martin Ritt's HOMBRE is based on a novel by Hollywood favorite Elmore Leonard (JACKIE BROWN). Paul Newman stars as John Russell, a white man raised by Apaches. When his last living relative dies, Russell inherits property that he decides to sell to a man in a neighboring town. So, Russell gets a ride on a stagecoach, along with seven other white passengers, to make the sale. However, when Russell's Apache heritage is discovered, the other passengers force him to ride on top of the coach. Along the way, the coach is raided by thieves who steal its horses and a substantial amount of money from one of the passengers, named Favor. Russell is able to get the money back from the thieves, but Favor's wife has been taken hostage and, robbed of their horses, the passengers are stranded. Russell is indifferent to the fate of Favor's wife, but the group cannot argue because he is the only one among them who knows the way home. Chased by the thieves for the money they still have, the group has to make a stand at an abandoned mine where they call on Russell to save Favor's wife.
Tom Jones [DVD]
Tony Richardson's rousing adaptation of Henry Fielding's classic comic novel stars Albert Finney as the eponymous swordsman. TOM JONES achieved enormous critical and commercial success, benefiting from an excellent cast, lively score, and unusually realistic art direction. While the film surely deserves this praise, Richardson initially considered it a failure, and it's likely that he saved the film in the editing room, emphasizing the farcical elements of the story with rapid intercutting, and adding amusingly ironic voice-over narration. The end product is one of the most entertaining costume dramas ever put on celluloid. Tom Jones is raised by Squire Allworthy (George Devine), his mother's (Joyce Redman) aptly named employer. He grows up to be a lively young man, loved by all except Allworthy's legitimate heir--the dour, envious Blifil (David Warner)--to whom Tom's true love Sophie Western (Susannah York) is promised in marriage. Allworthy feels obliged to send Tom away for Blifil's sake, which only briefly dampens Tom's mood. Soon, he's engaging in a famously libidinous eating scene with a woman met en route, carrying on with his ever-entertaining high spirits. An inspired piece of cinematic comedy, TOM JONES is most memorable for Finney's performance, which keeps viewers laughing long after the film's end.
