"Something Like This: The Bob Newhart Anthology" (03/20/2001) Comedy Newhart, Bob, Warner ArchivesProducers include: Jimmy Hilliard. Compilation producer: Bill Inglot. Engineers include: Lee Herschberg. Recorded between 1960 & 1967. Includes liner notes by Bill Inglot and Judy Brown. Audio Remasterers: Dan Hersch; Bill Inglot. Liner Note Author: Judy Brown. Recording information: Freddie's Club, MN; San Fernando State College, Northridge, CA; The Broadmoor International Center, Colorado Springs, C; The Crystal Room of the Desert Inn, Las Vegas, NV; The hungry i, San Francisco, CA; The Ice House, Pasadena, CA; The Tidelands club, Houston, TX; UCLA; University of California, Los Angeles, CA. Editor: Wally Kamin. Unique among even the most cutting-edge standup comics of the '60s, Bob Newhart entertained his audiences not with snappy patter and jokes, but with long monologues in which his voice represented one side of a conversation, the other side left to the listener's imagination. This idiosyncratic format proved endlessly adaptable, as Newhart spun seemingly endless scenarios from it. Before he became a beloved TV star with the Bob Newhart Show, he released several popular comedy albums, from which the best moments have been culled for inclusion on this definitive two-disc compilation. Whether he's advising Abraham Lincoln, confronting King Kong, or getting blitzed at a retirement party (among other comedic situations to be found here), Newhart employs his patented mild-mannered, "button-down" personality to subtle but sharp comic effect.

"Mitch All Together" (12/09/2003) Comedy Hedberg, Mitch, Comedy Central RecordsAbsurd like Steven Wright but nowhere near as laid-back, Mitch Hedberg throws out one bizarre observation after another on Mitch All Together. Hedberg builds on Wright's weird observational slant and has the same obsession with minutia, but while Wright was the man who fell to earth, Hedberg is a thinking man's Jeff Spicoli. His slack-jawed, foul-mouthed, stoner delivery takes some getting used to, but his material is great. The comedian points out that imprinting a chocolate bar with the candy's name robs people of chocolate, Dr. Pepper is better than Mr. Pibb because Pepper has a degree, and that escalators never really break down, they just become stairs. Wickedly riffing on these topics for longer than Wright ever did has given Hedberg a cult following and listening to Mitch All Together you can understand the excitement. Comedy Central makes it easy for the newbies to catch up by including a DVD featuring two of Hedberg's appearances on the network, one unedited. Barely any of the material overlaps and the whole package makes for a great introduction to this talented up-and-comer. ~ David Jeffries

"Songs & More Songs by Tom Lehrer" (05/06/1997) Comedy Lehrer, Tom, Rhino Records (USA)SONGS & MORE SONGS BY TOM LEHRER contains the two albums SONGS BY TOM LEHRER and MORE OF TOM LEHRER on one CD. Originally released in 1953 and 1959. Includes liner notes by Dr. Demento. Personnel: Tom Lehrer (piano). Audio Remasterers: Dan Hersch; Bill Inglot. Liner Note Author: Dr. Demento. Recording information: 01/22/1953-10/08/1996. Tom Lehrer recorded rather sporadically starting in the 1950s then abruptly retired in the mid-'60s from his unique solo musical comedy act. He's a competent pianist with a voice that is perfect for his original material. This compilation combines both of his records that were originally pressed and sold privately on the Lehrer label, which he later re-recorded with improved sound for Reprise as Songs by Tom Lehrer and the live concert An Evening Wasted with Tom Lehrer. While the differences between this CD and the Reprise versions are minimal, other than a little more muffled piano sound on these earlier recordings, it's fun to hear hilarious works like "The Irish Ballad," the creative "Oedipus Rex," and his satire of military life in "It Makes a Fellow Proud to Be a Soldier." Several favorites, including "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park" and "The Masochism Tango" are heard in orchestrated versions as well as by Lehrer alone. And Lehrer finally got around to recording "I Got It from Agnes," which implies how venereal disease is spread (in an amusing fashion, if that's possible) without ever coming out and saying it directly. This CD is a must for Lehrer fanatics. ~ Ken Dryden

"That Was the Year That Was" (04/24/1990) Comedy Lehrer, Tom, RepriseComposer: Tom Lehrer. Recording information: The hungry i, San Francisco, CA (07/1965). Imagine a Harvard professor (which he was) with a gift for the piano (which he had), and the iconoclastic humorous bent of a Lenny Bruce or George Carlin (right on the money), and you'll get a good picture of musical humorist Tom Lehrer, whose delightfully twisted ditties presaged the counterculture of both the Beats and the hippies. Unlike those bohemian types, Lehrer never let it all hang out; his professorial demeanor was part of his shtick, making his outrageous lyrical content all the more effective. Though he was a key comedic figure throughout the '50s, THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS is Lehrer's only '60s studio recording, and his last before his early retirement from music. No stone is left unturned, as he skewers the Catholic church to ragtime accompaniment on "The Vatican Rag," mocks phony liberalism and racial unrest in "National Brotherhood Week," and takes a well-aimed shot at the then-current folk revival in "The Folk Song Army."

"20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Bill Cosby" (05/22/2001) Comedy Cosby, Bill, MCA Records (USA)Personnel includes: Bill Cosby (spoken vocals). Recorded between 1970 & 1972. Includes liner notes by A. Scott Galloway. All tracks have been digitally remasterd. This is part of MCA's 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection series. Liner Note Author: A. Scott Galloway. Recording information: Madison Square Garden, New York, NY. Since most of MCA's 20th Century Masters: Millennium Edition has been devoted to musicians, it's a little strange to see it applied to a comedian, yet the same principle works very well on Bill Cosby's collection. This covers his early-'70s records for MCA, a time when he was deep into Fat Albert -- who indeed appears here with "Fat Albert's Car." Truth be told, this material isn't as classic as what appeared on the early-'60s albums on Warner, but it's pretty damn great all the same, and while it doesn't have the flow of a real comedy record (and is admittedly missing some great bits), it does have most of the major cuts he made during this time, and is a successful sampler. If you just want a taste of Cosby's early-'70s recordings, this is a good choice. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"Strategic Grill Locations [PA]" (12/09/2003) Comedy Hedberg, Mitch, Comedy Central RecordsPersonnel: Mitch Hedberg (spoken vocals); Chuck Savage (upright bass). Recorded live at The Laff Stop, Houston, Texas on September 7, 1999. Recording information: The Laff Stop, Houston, TX (09/07/1999). Editor: Jim Waters. Photographer: Lynn Shawcroft. Strategic Grill Locations is a traditional comedy record with Mitch Hedberg telling a string of one-liners and brief stories for the length of the CD. His subject matter and observations fall far from the traditional, but in form Strategic Grill Locations is a straightforward comedy record that matches Hedberg's devotion to pure standup. His wild thoughts and well-crafted delivery transcend the joke-after-joke format and make this one of the best comedy albums you are likely to hear. He was an excellent joke-teller with one of the most unique voices in standup comedy. What makes Hedberg's performance so endearing is his intense self-consciousness and the way he incorporates the crowd into the recording of the CD. He draws the audience in and really explains the process he is going through by telling one-liners and throwing out offhand comments. "I wrote a list of jokes to go on the CD," he explains with his recognizable delivery. "These are the CD jokes. I may add jokes to the set in a moment of spontaneity which you will be unable to detect." Hedberg openly mocks his own jokes and apologizes for telling the same joke with different ingredients, which adds to his cool but confused stage presence. Like a simplified and meditative George Carlin, he examines the language, saying, "I didn't sleep for ten days because that would be too long" and "My friend said, 'I hear music' as if there was any other way you could take it in." Strategic Grill Locations captures Hedberg as a kind of Reverend Jim Ignatowski/Rodney Dangerfield hybrid. The contrabass that plays throughout the set adds to the beatnik coffeehouse vibe that suits his comedy so well. Hedberg delivers line after line of strange and funny comments and observations, never taking any story too far away from a punch line. More than any other comedian of his generation, Mitch Hedberg was endlessly quotable. Every few seconds of Strategic Grill Locations brings another classic "Mitch." ~ Matt Whalley

"Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer [Remaster]" (08/24/2004) Comedy Elmo & Patsy, Legacy RecordingsElmo & Patsy includes: Dr. Elmo Shropshire (vocals). All tracks have been digitally remastered. Personnel: Elmo & Patsy; Gary Potterton (guitar); Doug Giddens (bass guitar); Doug Corrigan (background vocals). For Elmo & Patsy fans -- or any admirer of tongue-in-cheek tunes with country flair -- the title track on this album alone is a good enough reason to purchase it for your Christmas collection. Elmo & Patsy are really characters portrayed by a man named Elmo Shropshire, a man who has lead a varied enough life to create many more characters, if he ever so chooses. He has spent stretches as a horse trainer, jockey, veterinarian, and even as a competitive runner. Somehow he found time to perform with a bluegrass band and work on some solo offerings. "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer" was written and first performed in 1979. The video for the single debuted on MTV in 1983, and the full-length album that carries the same name was released a year later. The title track became an instant hit, moving above longtime favorites like "White Christmas" on the music charts. The album has sold more than seven million copies since it hit the store shelves. Other tracks on the recording include some fun Christmas classics like "Jingle Bells," "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer," and "Jingle Bell Rock." Mixed in are a few humorous songs like "Percy, the Puny Poinsettia" and "Se?or Santa Claus." Though not all tunes are done in what one would call perfect harmony -- like the clinkers listeners will hear in the rendition of "Silent Night" -- Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer is a merry offering to set to playing in the background of any Christmas get together that doesn't require evening wear. Some other albums Elmo & Patsy fans might want to check out are Dr. Elmo's Twisted Christmas, Up Your Chimney, Dr. Elmo's Twisted Tunes, and Love, Death and Taxes. ~ Charlotte Dillon

"A Wild and Crazy Guy" (1989) Comedy Martin, Steve, Warner Bros. Records (Record Label)Personnel: Steve Martin (vocals, banjo, background vocals); Michael Elias, Richard Hathaway, Brian Savage, Merle Brigante, Jeff Hanna (background vocals). Recording information: Boardinghouse, San Francisco, CA; Red Rocks, Denver, CO. Editor: William McEuen. Photographers: Bobby Klein; Norman Seeff; Lynn W. Gregg; Gary Nichamin; William R. Eastabrook. Unknown Contributor Roles: Brian Savage; Merle Brigante. Arranger: Jeff Hanna. '80s funnyman Steve Martin's follow-up to LET'S GET SMALL finds everyone's favorite rubberhead in the coterie of the stars. At this point, Martin was a national phenomenon, having already moved beyond nightclubs into stadiums. His stature was that of a juggernaut rock band. Martin's film debut ("The Jerk") helped to solidify his superstar status, as did the hit single "King Tut" (included here) and his frequent (and brilliantly hilarious) appearances on NBC's SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, where the "wild and crazy guy" moniker originated and stuck. A WILD AND CRAZY GUY is split between a single San Francisco gig and one of Martin's first stadium extravaganzas before a mob of adoring fans. Martin is at his comedic apotheosis here, meshing surrealism and slapstick into a howlingly funny whole. Among the featured routines are Martin's classic "rubberheads throw fish" bit and his sidesplitting soliloquy about religion and philosophy ("In philosophy, you learn just enough to screw you up for the rest of your life").

"The Anthology: 1968-1992 [PA]" (01/15/2002) Comedy Pryor, Richard, Warner ArchivesSolo performer: Richard Pryor (spoken vocals). Producers include: Robert Marchese, Richard Pryor, David Banks, Biff Dawes. Compilation producers: Reggie Collins, Steve Pokorny. Recorded between 1968 and 1992. Includes liner notes by Reggie Collins, Steve Pokorny, Walter Mosley. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Rhino's 2002 release The Anthology: 1968-1992 is essentially the highlights from their seminal 2000 box set, And It's Deep Too!, which contained the complete recordings (more or less) of Richard Pryor, the greatest comedian of his time and one of the great cultural forces of the 20th century. Since this is a clear case of recycling, it could be argued by some curmudgeons that there simply isn't a point behind this release, since it was all reissued. They're wrong, of course, since this not only does an excellent job of rounding up much of the greatest and best-known of his classic albums, but it provides a succinct, welcoming introduction to a large body of work -- something that simply couldn't be said about the lavish box set, no matter how great it is. Here, on the course of two discs (whose selections lean heavily on the breakthrough That Nigger's Crazy and Wanted/Richard Pryor Live in Concert), neophytes get a needed crash course in Pryor, not only through the great material, but with a terrific essay from Walter Mosley (originally published in the box), plus a nice introduction from Reggie Collins and Steve Pokorny that gently (and deservedly) plugs the larger set. If you have that set, you don't need this, but if you're curious, start here and don't be surprised if you invest in And It's Deep Too! not long afterward. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"Drunk in Public [PA]" (11/11/2003) Comedy White, Ron (Comedy), Hip-O RecordsRecorded at Laff Stop, Houston, Texas. Audio Mixer: Donivan Cowart. Recording information: Laff Stop, Houston, TX. Editor: Donivan Cowart. Photographer: Pete Tangen. Ron White made his hay as a member of "The Blue Collar Comedy Tour," alongside fellow sons of the South Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall, and Larry the Cable Guy. The show played to sold-out audiences in over 90 cities, with appearances on LATE NIGHT WITH DAVID LETTERMAN, Comedy Central, and CAROLINE'S COMEDY HOUR, where White crafted his self-deprecating comedic chops to a razor's edge. His debut album DRUNK IN PUBLIC is a hilarious delight. Unlike Foxworthy and Engvall, White eschews song parodies and instead goes straight to observational humor. With the sound of ice clinking in his glass of booze, raspy-voiced White rails against vegetarians and Hollywood fakes ("Ten Days In Los Angeles"), the problems with marrying into a rich family ("Married a Wealthy Woman"), and the pretentious in-laws that come with it ("Lug Nut Day"). White wraps up this tight package of laughs with "They Call Me 'Tater Salad'," a story that cleverly explains his unusual nickname and the title DRUNK IN PUBLIC.
