"The Best of Shel Silverstein: His Words His Songs His Friends [Remaster]" (10/25/2005) Comedy Various Artists, Legacy RecordingsPersonnel: Shel Silverstein (vocals); Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, The Irish Rovers, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Bobby Bare. Liner Note Author: Mitch Myers. The unerringly incisive (but always warm and engaging) satire of Shel Silverstein has expressed itself through stories, plays, cartoons, and, of course, songs. The musical side of his work bears the most personal stamp, though. His rough, endearingly amateurish singing and whole-hearted delivery effectively convey his unique charisma, and THE BEST OF SHEL SILVERSTEIN offers a fine entry into Silverstein's musical world. From his good-humored dissection of the hippie era ("Freakin' At the Freakers Ball") to the tunes that became staples of other artists' repertoire ("Marie Laveau," "A Boy Named Sue") and his poems/songs for children (he eventually achieved his greatest success with children's books), this collection paints a comprehensive portrait of Silverstein's multi-faceted talents.

"A John Waters Christmas [PA]" (11/09/2004) Comedy Various Artists, New Line RecordsLiner Note Author: John Waters . Photographers: Greg Gorman; Marc Huestis; Karl Esch; Todd Hedgepeth; Matthew Zeek Harris. Arranger: Robert Haring. A John Waters Christmas is the type of kitschy Christmas compilation one would expect from the cult director, featuring such gems as Roger Christian's reading of "Little Mary Christmas," the ballad of an orphaned girl who is passed up for adoption year after year until Santa Claus finally brings her a new set of parents, and Tiny Tim's rendition of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," which is, in all earnestness, one of the most uplifting and beautifully sincere versions of the song ever recorded. Certainly the holiday season is the perfect time to exercise musical novelty, considering that any holiday CD will stay on the shelf for the majority of the year. Waters has picked the best and fuzziest numbers for this set, including (oddly) a modern composition by Chicago indie provocateurs the Coctails, which features Sea and Cake multi-instrumentalist Archer Prewitt. Their lovely contribution, "First Snowfall," fits into the scope of the collection remarkably well, snuggled between Rita Faye Wilson's charming "Sleigh Bells, Reindeer and Snow" and the brilliant album closer, "Santa Claus Is a Black Man." A John Waters Christmas is a great set to break in and celebrate the season with, no doubt, and there is little overlap with any other holiday releases. It should be noted that the bitter "Here Comes Fatty Claus," sung from the perspective of Santa's overworked and underappreciated employees (led by Rudolph), elevates this collection to the "Parental Advisory: Explicit Content" level, but this should be no surprise for fans of John Waters' productions. ~ Gregory McIntosh

"Dr. Demento: The Very Best of Dr. Demento" (02/06/2001) Comedy Various Artists, Rhino Records (USA)Includes liner notes by Dr. Demento and Weird Al Yankovic. Digitally remastered by Bob Fisher. Personnel: Steve Clark (drums). Audio Remasterer: Bob Fisher . Liner Note Authors: Dr. Demento; Weird Al Yankovic. Photographers: Rocky Schenck; Mickey Dob¢; Dr. Demento; Hugh Brown; Mark Takeuchi. Rhino's stream of Dr. Demento compilations continues with The Very Best of Dr. Demento, which basically hauls out the Demento standards -- Barnes & Barnes' "Fish Heads," Allan Sherman's "Hello Mudduh, Hello Fadduh! (A Letter From Camp)," Napoleon XIV's "They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!," and the Firm's "Star Trekkin'" chief among them -- one more time. ~ Heather Phares Rhino's seemingly endless stream of Dr. However, novelty rock fans who already own virtually any of the other Dr. Demento collections probably don't need this one as well; there's just too much repetition from the other volumes to make this one worthwhile. ~ Heather Phares

"25 All-Time Novelty Hits" (04/23/2002) Comedy Various Artists, VarŠse Sarabande (USA)These 25 tracks were all hits between 1955 and 1977, so it might not be quite accurate to dub them "all-time novelty hits." Still, that's the time span that most people who buy such compilations are going to want to zero in on, so what's the harm in the chronological limits? It can be taken for granted that a novelty compilation is going to have a lot of frivolous material and might be too much of a good thing all at once if you're not in a certain mood. But this is a pretty good assortment of cuts, usually with a strong or at least tenuous rock base, ranging from familiar classic smashes to some items that are seldom anthologized or played on oldies radio. Among the best familiar tunes are the Olympics' Coasters-like "Western Movies," Bill Parsons' Elvis Presley satire "The All-American Boy" (actually sung by future country star Bobby Bare), Jan & Dean's "Baby Talk," Johnny Bond's "Hot Rod Lincoln," and the Trashmen's "Surfin' Bird." Among the most frivolous? Certainly Dickey Doo & the Don'ts' "Nee Nee Na Na Na Na Nu Nu" has marks to spare for qualification, as do Bob McFadden & Dor's "The Mummy" (written by Rod McKuen!), the Ran-Dells' outer-space doo wop takeoff "Martian Hop," the Pipkins' "Gimme Dat Ding," and Napoleon XIV's apocalyptic "They're Coming to Take Me Away Ha-Haaa!" As for the seldom-heard items, there's the Ivy Three's "Yogi," based on the Yogi Bear character and an actual (if quickly forgotten) Top Ten hit in 1960, the Daddy-O's' "Got a Match?," and the Peels' Chiquita Banana commercial spoof, "Juanita Banana." You also get Buchanan & Goodman's "The Flying Saucer, Pts. 1-2," a number three hit in 1956, but not often played these days due to its dated use of brief clips of early rock & roll hits in a simulated news report with mid-'50s topical references. The liner notes are learned and witty, something you can't expect as a given with these kind of reissues. ~ Richie Unterberger

"Dr. Demento 30th Anniversary Collection: Dementia 2000" (02/29/2000) Comedy Various Artists, Rhino Records (USA)Includes liner notes by Barry Hansen & Richard Foos. Digitally remastered by Bob Fisher. Audio Remasterer: Bob Fisher . Liner Note Author: Barry Hansen. Photographers: Michael Ochs; Hugh Brown. The Dr. Demento 30th Anniversary Collection: Dementia 2000 is the third double-disc Dr. Demento "anniversary" compilation Rhino has released, and it's kind of surprising that some of the songs here haven't been featured on the previous installments. But that works to the benefit of this collection, which includes big-ticket novelty records like Loudon Wainwright III's "Dead Skunk," Ozzy Fudd's "Kill the Wabbit," Tom Lehrer's "The Elements," Chuck Berry's "My Ding-A-Ling," and the Bonzo Dog Band's "I'm the Urban Spaceman," plus several Weird Al Yankovic songs. There are also hit oldies like the Coasters' "Charlie Brown" and Brian Hyland's "Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini," plus material from full-fledged comedy acts like George Carlin, Cheech & Chong, Billy Crystal, National Lampoon, and Monty Python. Overall, it's a necessary addition for anyone who enjoyed the previous volumes. ~ Steve Huey

"Bushspeak: The Curious Wit & Wisdom of George W. Bush" (06/01/2004) Comedy Bush, President George W., Shout! FactoryEvery president is subjected to the inevitable comedy record -- memorably, Stiff Records released The Wit & Wisdom of Ronald Reagan, which was blank on both sides -- and Shout Factory! has given listeners the first George W. Bush comedy record in Bushspeak: The Curious Wit & Wisdom of George W. Bush. Unlike the John F. Kennedy comedy records, which were sketches performed by comedians, Shout Factory! turns the floor over to Dubya himself, chronicling his most notorious verbal fumbles as a presidential candidate and as president. Many of these are quite familiar, even notorious -- a term that certainly works for "I don't think we need to be subliminable" and "the literacy level of our children are appalling" -- and they're gathered together according to chapters: "Bushspeak on Terrorism," "Bushspeak on Education," "Bushspeak on the Environment," "Bushspeak on the Economy," "Bushspeak on Governance & Compassion." At first, the speech snippets are played with patriotic music in the background, with each chapter announced in a booming voice; in the afterword, the snippets are repeated without music or announcements. The total running time for the main album and afterword is 18:14, which is kind of brief, but you can only take so much of this at once, and it's good that it makes its point and gets out of the way. It winds up being a good value for the dollar, something that works well to simultaneously amuse and rile the "Anyone But Bush" legions in 2004. After all, these start out being really funny -- "As I told a lot of folks in Texas over the years, I wish I knew the law"; "I couldn't imagine someone like Osama Bin Laden understanding the joy of Hanukkah"; "We're fully committed to working with both sides to bring the level of terror down to an acceptable level for both"; "I know the human being and fish can coexist peacefully" -- but after all these stumbles and gaffes, the following has a chilling impact. First, W revels in this memory: "One of the reporters said would you ever deficit spend and I said only, only in times of war, in times of economic insecurity as a result of a recession or in times of emergency. Never did I dream we'd have a trifecta." He follows this joke at the expense of our nation's dark days with a trademark snigger. Then, a little bit later, he has what seems to be a Freudian slip: "If this were a dictatorship it'd be a heck of a lot easier. [Snigger] Just so long as I'm the dictator." These statements bring a serious undercurrent to the humor that surrounds them and makes Bushspeak an effective political tool as well as a strong comedy album. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
