"Sex, Drugs, Rock 'n' Roll, and the End of the World" (04/20/2004) Comedy National Lampoon, Uproar EntertainmentPrincipal cast includes: Roger Bumpass, Suzy Demeter, Barry Diamond, Teresa Ganzel, Wendy Goldman, Mike Griffin, Fred Jones, Elizabeth Kemp, Tony Kisch, Jeff Madell, Phil Proctor, Tony Scheuren, Michael Simmons. Recorded at EFX Systems, Burbank, California. By the time National Lampoon produced the comedy LP Sex, Drugs, Rock 'n' Roll and the End of the World, they were on a downward spiral from which the publication would not recover. The imaginative writers from the early days, Michael O'Donoghue and Tony Hendra, among others, were all gone by the time of this 1982 recording; this record hardly compares with the writing and performers within earlier classics such as Radio Dinner and Lemmings. Ayatollah Khoemeni is introduced as the host of Firing Line in a recurring brief joke, Elizabeth Kemp does a fairly good impression of Jane Fonda, but the script falls flat. In fact, the biggest problem with this record is that it darts around without any significant extended skits. The musical numbers are longer than the skits but just as poorly written. It is very safe to say that fans of National Lampoon magazine in its heyday can safely bypass this very weak record, which is unlikely to be reissued on CD or to rise in value as a collectable. ~ Ken Dryden

The label's claim to fame is discovering redneck comic Jeff Foxworthy, and the gagsters on Hooked on Sex have a similar hillbilly vibe, albeit with filthier material. The cast isn't identified (except as "America's Funniest Stand Up Comics!"), but no one is funny, and only those who giggle whenever the subject of sex is brought up are likely to laugh. Well-worn jokes about the difference between male and female orgasms, wives who gain too much weight, and women who won't shut up after sex are trotted out before a live audience sufficiently lubricated enough to roar every time a profanity is uttered. A typically tired routine involves wretched impressions of celebrities (such as Jimmy Carter, Lawrence Welk, and "Gomer Pyle") achieving climax. A female comic spends her time commenting on her own obesity and lamenting her lack of oral sex skills. The nadir occurs when a comedian singles out the (presumably) sole African-American member of the audience, addressing him with a crude Negroid accent and cracking wise about the size of his genitals. The juvenile humor of Hooked on Sex will appeal to the emotionally retarded among listeners who still believe that men and women are two separate species; of course, anyone who expects sophisticated wit from a collection that features a drunken, cigarette-smoking cartoon cat on the cover deserves to be disappointed. ~ Fred Beldin
