Capitol Collection: 1990-2000 gathers all six of Chris Ledoux's albums for Capitol -- Haywire, One Road Man, Stampede, Under This Old Hat, Western Underground, and Whatcha Gonna Do With a Cowboy -- into a box set. Along with the hits these albums spawned, such as Under This Old Hat's "Cadillac Ranch" and the title track from Whatcha Gonna Do With a Cowboy, the set also features a bonus track on each disc. At nearly 70 tracks long, this set certainly isn't for casual fans (who would be better served by LeDoux's 20 Greatest Hits), but Capitol Collection is worthwhile for die-hard fans of his contemporary and neo-traditionalist country work. ~ Heather Phares

"Mountain Music" (1990) Country Alabama, BMG Special ProductsAlabama: Randy Owen, Jeff Cook (vocals, guitar); Teddy Gentry (vocals, bass); Mark Herndon (drums). Additional personnel: Jack Eubanks, George (Leo) Jackson, Fred Newell, Mark Casstevens, David Hanner, Dale Sellers (guitar); Bruce Watkins (banjo); William Rainsford, Rodger Morris (keyboards); Walter David Smith, Larry Paxton (bass); Hayward Bishop, David Humphreys, Jerry Kroon (drums). Engineers: Gene Rice, Harold Shedd, Paul Goldberg. Recorded at Music Mill, Nashville, Tennessee. Recorded when Alabama was in its prime, MOUNTAIN MUSIC combines pop rock with country in a very distinctive, always catchy manner. Comprising a variety of tunes ranging from slick rockers to soft, lush ballads, MOUNTAIN MUSIC creates a nice contrast and engages the listener from the very first note to the last. Some of the guitar rock tunes include a meritorious version of John Fogerty's "Green River," and Alabama's own "Never Be One." However, the most poignant songs on MOUNTAIN MUSIC are the slow dances. Songs such as "You Turn Me On," and "Close Enough To Be Perfect" are strong country ballads perfect for cuddling up with a loved one. While the production on this album is very much of its time, the music itself stands up well to contemporary scrutiny.

"Flashes of Fire: Hoyt's Very Best 1962-1990" (04/20/2004) Country Axton, Hoyt, RavenLiner Note Author: Keith Glass. Recording information: Troubadour (1962-1990). Though the public at large may know Hoyt Axton via the hits he wrote for the likes of Ringo Starr, Steppenwolf, and Three Dog Night, casual listeners probably don't have an intimate familiarity with his own recordings. The comprehensive collection FLASHES OF FIRE: HOYT'S VERY BEST does an excellent job of remedying that situation. It runs the gamut from Axton's early folkie days ("Greenback Dollar," a success for the Kingston Trio) through his hippie-era hits ("Joy To the World," a smash for Three Dog Night), all the way through to his later country-flavored tunes ("Della and the Dealer"). Whatever the mode, Axton's rich, deep voice, and unerring craftsmanship are a constant pleasure.

"Country Music Classics, Vol. 22 1985-1990" (n/a) Country Various Artists, K-Tel DistributionCountry Music Classics, Vol. 22 (1985-1990) collects ten tracks that embrace the country-pop of the period. Highlights from this budget-priced collection include original versions of "Step That Step" by Sawyer Brown, "'80s Ladies" by K.T. Oslin, "That Rock Won't Roll" by Restless Heart, and "Don't Underestimate My Love for You" by Lee Greenwood. "Dispatches: 1990-99" (03/29/2005) Country Jones, George, RavenLiner Note Author: John Dowler. George Jones recorded steadily throughout the '90s, sometimes racking up some minor hits, sometimes having one of his records -- such as 1999's The Cold Hard Truth -- being hailed as a return to form. Most of the time, he made tasteful, unremarkable records that had a couple of highlights but rarely distinguished themselves from his other latter-day records, so it was hard even for dedicated fans to separated 1991's And Along Came Jones from 1992's Walls Can Fall. Raven's 2005 compilation Dispatches: 1990-99 does those fans a favor by culling the highlights from those records, ignoring singles for gems buried deep on those albums. Since this was assembled with a subjective eye, it shouldn't be a surprise that the compilers favor ballads and ignore novelties and while that might be both a smart and accurate move, about a third of the way through, the compilation begins to suffer from the flaw common to Jones' '90s albums: they're a little samey. True, these are by and large the best songs he recorded during the decade -- and it's certainly the best way for fans of his classic work to sample his latter-day work -- but after a while, it's hard not to wish that "I Don't Need Your Rockin' Chair" or something like it was thrown in just for a change of pace, since 22 slick ballads from the '90s is an awful lot to take in one sitting. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"Bluegrass Class of 1990" (09/25/1990) Country Various Artists, Rounder SelectThis compilation album reads like a who's-who of the progressive bluegrass/new acoustic music movement: pros like mandolinist David Grisman, guitarist Tony Rice, dobro player Jerry Douglas and a pre-Flecktones Bela Fleck are all represented, as well as the (very) young Alison Krauss and many, many others. Though most of the guns are big, some of the album's best moments come from artists who were relative unknowns at the time of its release: the Whitstein Brothers offer a classic guitar-mandolin duo number in the pre-war style of the Blue Sky Boys; Krauss delivers two modern bluegrass gems in a voice as bright and pure as an icicle melting in the sun. The album's highlight, though, is the rendition of "Old Home Place" by J.D. Crowe and the New South. It's a chestnut, all right, but the combination of Crowe's driving banjo and the ringing, bittersweet blend of Tony Rice and Ricky Skaggs' voices will make your hair stand on end every time you hear it. This album belongs on every bluegrass fan's desert island list. ~ Rick Anderson

"Gypsy Angel: The Gene Clark Demos 1983-1990" (01/26/2005) Rock & Pop Clark, Gene, Evangeline (UK)GYPSY ANGEL brings together 12 formerly unheard tracks from the late Gene Clark, best known for his work with The Byrds. In 1990, Gene Clark was blocking out plans for a second album with Carla Olson after their 1987 duo set, So Rebellious a Lover, became the most popular work of his career after leaving the Byrds, and he recorded a batch of acoustic demos that year in preparation for the project. However, Clark died in the spring of 1991 before he could take any of the songs into the studio. Gypsy Angel: The Gene Clark Demos 1983-1990 compiles eight songs from the casually recorded 1990 sessions, with four tunes Clark demoed in the mid-'80s. The biggest problem with the material on Gypsy Angel is that these recordings were clearly demos (the fidelity isn't especially good, and except for one song, these demos feature just Clark and his rudimentary acoustic guitar), and one wonders if some of these songs were in their finished form yet; the songs are quite long (the eight 1990 cuts clock in at over 53 minutes), and while they boast the sort of lovely melodies that were second nature to Clark, nearly all of them would have benefited from some judicious editing. In the last years of his life, Gene Clark's health was in serious decline, and it's hard not to tell on this album; his voice is not in especially good shape (especially on "Rock of Ages"), and even on the selections where his pipes rise to the occasion, he sounds a bit tired, as if he's not running at full-strength (and he almost certainly wasn't). By comparison, the four 1983 recordings find Clark in much stronger form, with his voice sounding strong and sure and the songs better-crafted and more concise. To say that Gene Clark deserved a better shake from his career is an understatement, and by all accounts he left behind a treasure trove of unreleased material that deserves to be heard. Gypsy Angel, however, is hardly the best place to start exploring the work he left behind; fans may find it intriguing, but it's by no means an essential listen. ~ Mark Deming
