"Winners [1995]" (07/30/2002) Country Wynette, Tammy, Sony Music Distribution (USA)While no ten-track compilation could even begin to capture the true breadth of the great Tammy Wynette's career, Winners is a decent overview focusing primarily on her 1970s recordings for Epic, occasionally detouring to include earlier hits like the perennial "Stand by Your Man"; other highlights include the chart-topping "'Til I Can Make It on My Own" and "My Man (Understands)." ~ Hank Small

"Small Worlds: The Crowell Collection 1978-1995" (11/05/2002) Rock & Pop Crowell, Rodney, RavenPersonnel: Rodney Crowell (guitar, percussion); Hank DeVito (guitar, steel guitar); Albert Lee (guitar, keyboards, background vocals); John Leventhal (guitar, percussion); Vince Gill (guitar, background vocals); Dan Huff, James Burton, Amos Garrett, Richard Bennett , Steuart Smith, Billy Joe Walker , Frank Reckard, Brent Mason (guitar); Bobby Clark (slide guitar); Paul Franklin (steel guitar, dobro); B?la Fleck (banjo); Glen Duncan, Mark O'Connor , Richard Greene , Stuart Duncan, Byron Berline (fiddle); Jerry Jumonville, Jim Horn (saxophone); Steve Nathan (harmonium); Booker T. Hardin, Tony Brown, Larry Klein, Mac Rebennack, Shane Keister, Barry Beckett (keyboards); Vince Melamed (synthesizer); Hal Blaine, Larrie Londin, Mickey Curry, Russ Kunkel, Eddie Bayers, John Ware, Paul Leim (drums); Kenny Aronoff (percussion); Chris Rodriguez, Donivan Cowart, Emmylou Harris, Harry Stinson, Herb Pedersen, Pete Wosner, Lari White, Mark Luna, Mary Ann Kennedy, Nicolette Larson, Pamela Rose, Patty Loveless, Preston Smith, Rosanne Cash, Ashley Cleveland, Kim Richey, Vince Santoro (background vocals). Liner Note Author: Keith Glass. Small Worlds: The Crowell Collection 1978-1995 epitomizes why Rodney Crowell is a perfect example of the "new" country, a combination of styles creating slick pop music that would have had a tougher time in the '60s garnering the country & western play many of these songs achieved. There are lots of names lending their talents on these 21 tracks: Vince Gill, Dr. John, Emmylou Harris, Nicolette Larson, Booker T. Jones, Hal Blaine, and Russ Kunkel, among many others. "Let the Picture Paint Itself" borrows more from Elton John/Bernie Taupin's "Country Comforts" than it does from Jeannie C. Riley's "Harper Valley P.T.A.," though you can hear nicks of both melodies in this song, which is very different from both those tunes, and Roy Orbison lives again on Crowell's duet with former wife Rosanne Cash on the title track, "It's Such a Small World," as well as on "I Couldn't Leave You if I Tried" and "If Looks Could Kill." "If Looks Could Kill" is certainly not the song by Heart, but when Crowell references the Beatles and quotes their lyrics in "Lovin' All Night," one has to consider if the inspiration is coming from the land of Hank Williams or the realm where the sisters Wilson ruled. These influences seem to be co-writing with Rodney Crowell when he reads a brilliant lyric like, "What kind of love hears you when you pray?" in "What Kind of Love," composed by Crowell with Will Jennings and Roy Orbison, additional voices courtesy of Linda Ronstadt and Don Henley. Emulating Orbison by having his voice go into that texture is a tribute to his hero indeed, and very present on this "first multi-label career overview." Tracks were culled from releases on Warner Bros., Columbia, and MCA, making for another excellent collection from Australia's Raven Records with 21 tracks, over 77 minutes of music, all on one disc. And like 7-N/BMG's meticulous re-releases, Raven's come spilling over with definite and comprehensive liner notes, 16 pages here, making this repackaged music all the more vital for longtime fans as well as a great primer for the uninitiated. ~ Joe Viglione

"50 Years of Bluegrass Hits, Vol. 1 [1995]" (04/15/1992) Country Various Artists, CMH Records2 LPS on 1 CD. Includes liner notes by Norm Cohen. Liner Note Author: Norm Cohen. CHM raids the vaults yet again, drawing on tried and true bluegrass classics by the likes of the Osborne Brothers, Mac Wiseman, Jim & Jesse, and Rose Lee Maphis. There's nothing here that bluegrass aficionados haven't heard before or have elsewhere, but with over an hour's worth of music and solid musicianship all the way through, 50 Years of Bluegrass Hits isn't a bad place for a newcomer or casual fan to start. Standards like "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" and "Muleskinner Blues" share space with virtuosic almost-novelties such as Benny Martin's "Dueling Fiddles," as well as a few gospel-tinged numbers. ~ Johnny Loftus

"Greatest Hits 1990-1995" (01/24/1995) Country Sawyer Brown, CurbSawyer Brown: Mark Miller (vocals); Duncan Cameron (guitar, vocals); Gregg Hubbard (keyboards, vocals); Jim Scholten (bass); Joe Smyth (drums, percussion). Producers: Mark Miller, Randy Scruggs, Mac McAnally. Personnel: Duncan Cameron (vocals, guitar); Gregg Hubbard (vocals, keyboards); Mark Miller (vocals); Clara Olson, John Catchings, Kris Wilkinson, David Davidson (strings); Joe "Curley" Smyth (drums, percussion). Recording information: Dugout; Muscle Shoals Sound; SCruggs Sound Studio, Nashville, TN; Treasure Isle. Photographer: Dean Dixon. Unknown Contributor Roles: Earl Scruggs; James Hooker; Larrie Londin; Matt Rollings; Mike Lawler; Paul Franklin; Roger Hawkins; Sam Bush; Terry McMillan; Eddie Bayers; John Jarvis; Steve Nathan; Paul Leim; Jay Dee Maness; Jim Scholten. Arranger: Edgar Meyer. Sawyer Brown, one of the most popular groups on the country scene, have had a long well-deserved string of hits. Much of their popularity can be attributed to their blend of deep country roots with a strong pop sensibility. Leader Mark Miller has a dynamic stage presence and a Pentecostal background which adds a dramatic dimension to his performance. GREATEST HITS 1990-1995 is a substantial collection--all the songs really were big hits, there's no filler here. Their style is spunky, the lyrics playful, and the music irresistable. Ballads like "All These Years" and "The Walk" are emotionally satisfying because of Miller's ability to deliver a lyric with believability. His resonant vocals can drive home a lyric about rough-housing with good ol' boys as credibly as a lyric about the fragility of marriage. "The Walk" effectively illustrates the power of traditional country music lyrics, and the genre's ability to tug at the heartstrings. "Trouble On The Line" shows off Sawyer Brown's rock 'n' roll side, particularly on the intro guitar riff which echoes "Last Train To Clarksville." GREATEST HITS 1990-1995 is the perfect introduction to the wide-ranging catalog of this beloved, award-winning country band.
