"RCA Country Legends" (11/07/2000) Country Pride, Charley, Buddha RecordsPersonnel includes: Charley Pride (vocals); Billy Grammer, Peter Wade, Chip Young, Jerry Stembridge (guitar); Lloyd Green, Charles O'Neal (steel guitar); Johnny Gimble, Tommy Williams (fiddle); Bill Pursell, David Briggs (piano); Mike Leech, Billy Sanford, Roy Huskey Jr. (bass); Jerry Carrigan, D.J. Fontana, Jimmy Isbel (drums); Hurshel Wiginton, June Page, Dolores Edgin, Joseph Babcock (background vocals). Producers include: Jack Clement, Chet Atkins, Felton Jarvis, Bob Ferguson, Jerry Bradley. Compilation producer: Rob Santos. Includes liner notes by Rich Kienzle. Charley Pride was the first African-American country superstar, and these days it's hard to believe that his earliest records, like his 1965 debut "Snakes Crawl At Night," (written by Mel Tillis) were originally released without his picture on the 45 sleeve. By 1967 and "Just Between You and Me," however, country fans knew him and embraced him. This compilation, which includes those two songs, features no less than 12 (!) Number One country hits, each sung by Pride in his unmistakable twangy baritone. High points include terrific covers of Hank Williams (a 1979 version of "Honky Tonk Blues"), rockabilly cult figure Harold Dorman's "Mountain of Love," and "Busted," the 1963 Ray Charles hit.

"The Essential Charley Pride [RLG Legacy]" (05/30/2006) Country Pride, Charley, RCA Records (USA)Adapters: Jack D. Johnson; Charley Pride. Personnel: The Jordanaires (vocals); Nashville Hornworks (horns). Liner Note Author: Rich Kienzle. Recording information: 05/06/1966-11/30/1984. Photographer: Les Leverett. Arrangers: Henry Mancini; Jack D. Johnson; Charley Pride. RCA/Legacy's 2006 release The Essential Charley Pride is a repackaged reissue of BMG Heritage's 2003 compilation Anthology, containing a different title and cover art, but bearing the same 40 tracks and annotation. There have been plenty of Charley Pride collections issued throughout the years, but none have been better than BMG Heritage's 2003 double-disc set Anthology. Over the course of two discs and 40 tracks, the compilation spans his two decades with RCA, from his first single "Before I Met You" in 1966 to 1985's "Down on the Farm." Between those two songs are all of his biggest hits -- "Just Between You and Me," "The Easy Part's Over," "(I'm So) Afraid of Losing You Again," "All I Have to Offer You Is Me," "Kaw-Liga," "I Can't Believe That You've Stopped Loving Me," "Is Anybody Goin' to San Antone," "Kiss An Angel Good Mornin'," "It's Gonna Take a Little Bit Longer," "She's Too Good to Be True," "A Shoulder to Cry On," "Mississippi Cotton Picking Delta Town," and "Where Do I Put Her Memory," among them. Since Pride was a constant presence at the top of the country charts during these two decades, Anthology is missing some big (and good) hits, particularly such late-'70s and early-'80s sides as "You're My Jamaica," simply due to the constraints of the compilation; even at two discs, there are only so many songs that can fit on this set. Even with the absence of these hit singles, Anthology is the best Charley Pride compilation yet assembled: no other collection contains so much of his best material presented in such loving yet logical fashion, nor is there another set quite so listenable as this. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"16 Biggest Hits" (03/22/2005) Country Pride, Charley, BMG HeritagePersonnel: Charley Pride (vocals); The Jordanaires, The Nashville Edition (vocals). Recording information: 04/15/1969-09/02/1976. Despite its title, RCA/Legacy's 2005 release 16 Biggest Hits doesn't necessarily contain all of Charley Pride's biggest hit singles. Such country Top Ten hits as "Kaw-Liga" and "All His Children" are missing, so it can't be considered a complete hits overview. That said, 16 Biggest Hits has most of Pride's very biggest singles, including "(I'm So) Afraid of Losing You Again," "All I Have to Offer You (Is Me)," "Is Anybody Goin' to San Antone," "Kiss an Angel Good Mornin'," "It's Gonna Take a Little Bit Longer," "A Shoulder to Cry On," and "Hope You're Feelin' Me (Like I'm Feelin' You)." While there are other collections that offer more material and hits -- chief among them 1997's Essential Charley Pride and 2000's RCA Country Legends -- this is still a first-rate sampler of Pride's best material from the late '60s and early '70s. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"The Essential Charley Pride [RCA]" (04/29/1997) Country Pride, Charley, RCA Records (USA)All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of RCA Nashville's Essentials series. Part of BMG's comprehensive series of single-disc compilations featuring the great old-school country music stars of the 1960s and '70s, THE ESSENTIAL CHARLEY PRIDE is by necessity not comprehensive in the least. The man has had over four-dozen charting country hits in his career, after all. That said, however, ESSENTIAL CHARLEY PRIDE does a fine job of collecting all the high points, and only diehard fans (for whom this sort of single-disc introduction is superfluous anyway) will be disappointed by the track selection. Huge hits like "Kiss an Angel Good Mornin'" and the reggae-influenced "You're My Jamaica" sit comfortably next to early gems like the classic cheating song "Does My Ring Hurt Your Finger," all of them remastered and sounding far superior to the thin-sounding early CDs.

"Greatest Hits (Collectables)" (03/14/2006) Country Pride, Charley, Collectables RecordsConsidering it's a budget-priced sampler, BMG Special Products' Greatest Hits provides a fine sampler of Charley Pride's hits. Only one song among these ten tracks ("A Whole Lotta Things to Sing About") didn't chart in the Top Ten; the rest, including "You're My Jamaica," "Honky Tonk Blues," "Where Do I Put Her Memory," "(She's Just) An Old Love Turned Memory," "Burgers and Fries," and "Wonder Could I Live There Anymore," are some of his best songs. While there are more comprehensive collections on the market, having these hits in one place makes the disc a good bargain for budget-minded casual fans. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"The Very Best of Charley Pride 1987-1989" (09/23/2003) Country Pride, Charley, Varese Sarabande (USA)Producers: Ray Baker, Jerry Bradley, Charley Pride. Compilation producers: Cary E. Mansfield, Brian Mansfield. Recorded between 1987 & 1989. Includes liner notes by Brian Mansfield. Liner Note Author: Brian Mansfield. The Very Best of Charley Pride 1987-1989 is a showcase for the singer's "hits" from those two years. This material is taken from his albums After All This Time, I'm Gonna Love Her on the Radio, and Moody Woman, the two biggest hits being "Shouldn't It Be Easier Than This" (number five on the country charts 1987) and "Have I Got Some Blues for You" (number 14 on the country charts in 1987). A bonus for Pride fans are the four unreleased tracks: "I Wrote the Songs That Broke Her Heart," "Nickels and Dimes and Love," "Woman Can," and "That Ol' Gravel Road (Was Easy Street)." Those wanting Pride's biggest hits would be better served by RCA Country Legends. ~ Al Campbell
