"Giant Hits [Sony]" (07/30/2002) Oldies Cash, Johnny, Sony Music Distribution (USA)Personnel: Johnny Cash (vocals, guitar). This budget-priced collection is notable for its smart mix of covers and Johnny Cash originals. Highlights include a re-recording of his Sun Records hit "I Walk the Line," as well as "Ring of Fire," written by his wife, June Carter, about the early days of their relationship. A creditable steel guitar-accompanied cover of "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" tips a hat to one of Cash's idols, Hank Williams, while his well-chosen recordings of other songwriters' songs are represented here by Steve Goodman's "The City of New Orleans" and Kris Kristofferson's "Sunday Morning Coming Down." "Sings Songs of Love" (04/17/2001) Oldies Cline, Patsy, Universal Special ProductsAs the title implies, SINGS SONGS OF LOVE is a compilation of Patsy Cline's romatically inclined material, from throughout her all-too-short career. Producer: Owen Bradley. Compilation producer: Bob Zipkin. Personnel: Patsy Cline (vocals). As budget compilations go, this one actually has a reason to live; in fact, it's got a concept - Cline singing romantic ballads - that actually makes sense, both musically and thematically. It's also helpful that most of these songs were recorded around the same time (early '60s), which means that the instrumental backing - twangy guitars, the piano banging out triplets, Jordannaires style chorus vocals - has a nice consistency. Several of Cline's biggest hits are here of course ("Crazy," "Sweet Dreams," "I Fall to Pieces"), but there are also excellent, lesser known tracks including nice covers of the Duprees doo-wop classic "You Belong to Me," and Cole Porter's "True Love."

"What God Has Done" (02/05/1999) Country Robbins, Marty, Sony Music Distribution (USA)Personnel: Marty Robbins (vocals). Liner Note Author: Marizona Robbins. Editor: Sally Hinkle. Illustrator: Bill Imhoff. Considering the excellence of this album, it's surprising that Robbins didn't record more gospel music. It's downright shocking, however, that save for "The Great Speckled Bird" on Singin' the Hits, none of these tracks have ever appeared on a Robbins compilation. Even the incredibly varied Essential Marty Robbins: 1951-1982 ignores it completely, but oh well -- that makes it worthy of reissue, and there's nothing wrong with that. This isn't classic stuff, but it's punchy and tender in all the right places, highlighted by a vivacious take on "When the Roll Is Called up Yonder," a somber, beautiful "Almost Persuaded," and the delicate closer, "Have Thine Own Way, Lord." Robbins sings passionately throughout, and the background singers, who have ruined many a '60s country record, actually enhance this one, giving the songs a churchy feel. Its budget price makes it a nice addition to any library. ~ Jim Smith

"Country Classics" (2000) Country Rabbitt, Eddie, Flashback RecordsAudio Remasterer: Bob Fisher . Photographer: Slick Lawson. Rhino Flashback's Eddie Rabbitt compilation Country Classics would be no better or worse than any of the others if it included the FM staple "Drivin' My Life Away." For most listeners, the main objective is secure both that song and "I Love a Rainy Night," only the latter of which makes an appearance here. Fans would be better off picking up 2003's Essentials or 2005's All Time Greatest Hits. ~ James Christopher Monger

"Crazy Country" (08/29/1997) Oldies Cash, Johnny, Sony Music Distribution (USA)This odd little compilation of lighthearted Johnny Cash songs proves that the Man In Black didn't always confine himself to somber subjects. Suitable both for older kids and grown-ups who feel like a dose of oddball humor, it highlights the country legend's lighter side--the most well-known of the songs is his get-tough-or-die hit "A Boy Named Sue." "Everybody Loves a Nut" is pure Ray Stevens-type 1960s Nashville tomfoolery, while Cash and band sound like they're having a great time on his spoof tearjerker, "Flushed From the Bathroom of Your Heart." "Look At Them Beans" is the singer's country remake of Joe Tex's R&B homily, "Papa's Dream," while "One Piece At a Time," the story of a car built out of purloined parts, was another hit, topping the country charts in the mid-'70s.

Audio Mixer: Ed Seay. Recording information: Cool Tool Audio, Blluebery Hill; Sony; Tracking Room; Treasure Isle; Tree Studio. Photographer: Kristin Barlowe. From the opening guitar riffs of THE DREAMER's first song, "Heavy Lifting," it's clear that there's more than a little rock & roll in Blake Shelton's country music, but that doesn't mean the lad hasn't got a sense of Music City history. In case you thought the country tradition of trucking songs died out with Dave Dudley, Shelton serves to remind that it's very much alive--though now decked out with modern-sounding rhythm loops--on "Asphalt Cowboy." "In My Heaven" finds Shelton imagining his version of paradise, a place where there's no violence, loneliness, or dishonesty. The album's working-man-with-heart-of-gold stance, widescreen power chords, and anthemic choruses suggest that Shelton is something of a country Springsteen, but the bottleneck guitar on "My Neck of the Woods" and the honky-tonk fiddle of "Georgia in a Jug" leave little doubt as to the side of the Mason-Dixon line on which his heart resides.

"Country Music Hall of Fame 1984" (01/25/2000) Country Tillman, Floyd, KingIncludes liner notes by Chuck Young. Liner Note Author: Chuck Young. Part of King's Country Hall of Fame series, this brings together 12 tracks from this artist's heyday at the label. Although the booklet is nonexistent, there's a nice bio on Tillman on the tray card, and the transfers are decent, featuring biggies like "I Love You So Much It Hurts," "Drivin' Nails in My Coffin," and "Empty Glass." This is real honky tonk, circa the late '40s, and these tracks capture a sound that left country decades ago. ~ Cub Koda

"Country Music Hall of Fame 1998" (01/25/2000) Country Morgan, George, KingPart of King's Country Hall of Fame series, this brings together ten tracks from this hall of famer. Unfortunately, these are not the originals, but late-period recuts -- which is obvious from their stereo mixes and Music City, U.S.A., backings. Although the booklet is nonexistent, there's a nice, short bio on Morgan on the tray card, and the versions of hits like "Room Full of Roses" and "Candy Kisses" still work, despite the modern backing. ~ Cub Koda
