"Today's Country [2 CD] [Box]" (10/09/2001) Country Countdown Singers, Madacy DistributionPremiere session cover band the Countdown Singers hit the nail on the head with Today's Country, their compilation of contemporary country songs as covered by them. The anonymous boys and girls of the group have found what they can mimic almost perfectly: country music. Songs like "My Next Thirty Years" still maintain the same emotional level and power even without Tim McGraw's vocals. The reason for this may partially be because most of these tracks were not written by the artists who made them such big hits. Whatever the reason, the only thing that these cover versions really lack is the quality of production that the original renditions maintain. Plus, there is always the issue of the original versions being better almost by default; even if these are excellent covers, they are not what most listeners would choose to listen to. But if there is any Countdown Singers album where they excel at their goal, this is the one. Anyone who is not concerned with hearing the original artist perform these tracks but still wants the actual songs on CD would do themselves a favor by checking this out. ~ Bradley Torreano

"Classic Country Love Songs [Box]" (10/09/2001) Country Countdown Singers, Madacy DistributionMostly taken from '70s and '80s country hits, Classic Country Love Songs is another cover album from Madacy records' house band, the Countdown Singers. These 20 songs are covered by Madacy's session musicians quite well, with several sounding almost exactly like the original. The only problem is that many of these songs are already quite dated and have lost much of their original appeal through the years. Of course, there will always be fans of this time period in the genre, but country music made some drastic changes in the late '80s/early '90s that has dated much of this material. Plus, the point of the Countdown Singers is to provide an inexpensive way to collect these songs together, but most of these songs are old enough to be quite available on most budget collections already. This album is a failure, but not for any other reason except the source material is completely wrong for the concept of the Countdown Singers. In their defense, they really do work well with country music, but with so many other collections offering the original renditions, this simply cannot be recommended. ~ Bradley Torreano

"Heaven's My Home 1927-1928" (08/24/2004) Country Allison's Sacred Harp Singers, CountyPersonnel: J.T. Vaughn, George Allison, James Allison (vocals). Audio Remasterer: Christopher [1] C. King. Recording information: Richmond, IN (05/01/1928). Allison's Sacred Harp Singers must have seemed as much an anomaly in 1927 and 1928 -- when they first recorded -- as they would be in 2004. The shape note singing on Heaven's My Home, after all, originated in 19th century churches. By the early 20th century, radio and records would broadcast more contemporary styles (the Grand Ole Opry first broadcast during the 1920s), making religious material with spare accompaniment seem slightly old-fashioned. But record companies, facing a slump, attempted to tap regional markets. This, surprisingly, included recording groups that drew their material from the shape note hymnbooks of yesteryear like The Sacred Harp (1844). After recording two apparently successful tracks for Gennett in Alabama (both tracks, "I'm a Long Time Traveling Away from Home" and "I Belong to This Band," are included), Allison's Sacred Harp Singers traveled to Richmond, IN, to record more material. Over the course of one day, May 1, 1928, the group recorded 30 songs, 19 of which are included on Heaven's My Home. While many contemporary listeners will find the four-note range -- fa-sol-la-fa-sol-la-mi-fa -- monotonous, these recordings offer a rare chance to hear versions of "Bound for Canaan," "Traveling Pilgrim," and the title track performed in the same manner as they would've been performed as far back as the early 1800s (save for the piano and organ accompaniment). The sound quality is excellent, and the liner notes by John Bealle and Joyce Cauthen are first-rate. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr.

"Strange Creek Singers: Get Aquatinted Waltz" (08/19/1997) Country Strange Creek Singers, ArhooliePersonnel: Tracy Schwarz (vocals, guitar, dobro, fiddle); Mike Seeger (vocals, guitar, banjo, autoharp, mandolin, fiddle, harmonica); Alice Gerrard (vocals, guitar); Hazel Dickens (vocals); Lamar Grier (banjo). Liner Note Author: Richard K. Spottswood. Recording information: Glen Rock Community Center, Glen Rock, PA (1968-1970). Photographer: Betsy Siggins. This recording of country/folk three-part harmonies will seem a bit accessible to someone familiar with the smooth sound of Alison Krauss. One might also find these recordings spanning 1968 through 1970 full of charm and honesty. Four city kids are unsatisfied with the pop vocal groups and become enamored with the folk revival of the time. This is their worthy attempt to add to that honored body of work. Several bluegrass vocal favorites are treated here. Among them are "Sunny Side of Life" and "Will the Circle Be Unbroken." While the Strange Creek Singers sometimes outdo themselves technically, their passion and love for their craft makes this album a classic. ~ Tom Schulte

"Gospel Soul" (09/23/1994) Country Singer Silvertone Singers, KingGOSPEL SOUL was recorded by gospel journeymen the Swan Silvertones for Cincinnati label King Records. The group recorded for King from 1946 to 1951 before going on to enjoy a measure of commercial success in the '50s on VeeJay Records. Lead tenor Claude Jeter was an influence for many soul singers who followed, and there are moments on this album in which his voice takes on a sweet, Sam Cooke-like quality. On many of these songs, simple finger-strummed nylon-string guitar provides a warm background over which the Silvertones weave their rich harmonies. The arrangements are simple, effective, and stirring. The bluesy "Go Ahead" has a warm and clean timbre. The closing number, "I've Tried" is a standout track. There's a graceful charm to GOSPEL SOUL that's hard to resist.

"Reflect on the Hits of Burt Bacharach & Hal David/Velvet Voices and Bold Brass" (12/15/2004) Country Kerr, Anita, Collectors' Choice Music2 LPs on 1 CD. The Anita Kerr Singers: Anita Kerr, Jackie Ward, Gene Merlino, Bob Tebow. Includes liner notes by Johnny Magnus. Personnel: Anita Kerr (vocals); Gene Merlino (tenor); Bob Tebow (bass voice). Audio Remixers: Marty Wekser; Paul Elmore. Arranger: Anita Kerr. It's unclear what segment of the listening population this Collector's Choice Music reissue is targeted to, but it does include the complete contents of two LPs by the Anita Kerr Singers, Reflect... and Velvet Voices and Golden Brass. The focus of the first, on songs written by the team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David, makes for a pleasant (though innocuous) listen. The choir tackles a baker's dozen of the most well-known Bacharach standards, including "Do You Know the Way to San Jose?," "Walk on By," "I Say a Little Prayer," and "The Look of Love." As expected, there are few surprises. The Velvet Voices and Golden Brass album presents rock (and a few Broadway) standards of the day given the inimitable Anita Kerr treatment. There are one or two surprises (Donovan's "Lalena," Billie Holiday's "God Bless the Child") that might pique the interest of a few listeners, but the world hardly needed more versions of "The Windmills of Your Mind," "My Way," and "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da." The two-fer makes for an hour of vaguely pleasant, nostalgic wallpaper -- but not much else. ~ John Bush
