"Love Songs" (09/26/2000) Country Raye, Collin, Legacy RecordingsProducers include: Jerry Fuller, John Hobbs, Garth Fundis, Collin Raye, Billy Joe Walker, Jr. Digitally mastered by Randy King (DiscMastering, Nashville, Tennessee). Personnel: Biff Watson (acoustic guitar); Steve Nathan (keyboards). Audio Mixer: Billy Sherrill . Recording information: Seventeen Grand Recording, Nashville TN. Photographer: Jim Shea. Collin Raye built his career on romantic ballads, and a couple of his most popular ones -- "Love, Me" and "In This Life" -- are included on this ten-song budget anthology. But for the most part, the compilers have steered clear of Raye's country chart hits, no doubt fearing to cannibalize sales from his full-priced The Best of Collin Raye: Direct Hits collection. Instead, he is heard on album tracks that were hits for others, such as "Let It Be Me" (the Everly Brothers) and "Dreaming My Dreams With You" (Waylon Jennings). He has also cut one new cover just for this release, Don McLean's "And I Love You So" (Perry Como). Raye is, as ever, achingly sincere, but this is more a sampler than a real selection of his best love songs. ~ William Ruhlmann

"Love Songs" (12/28/2004) Country Robbins, Marty, Legacy RecordingsLiner Note Author: Johnny Whiteside. Recording information: 01/10/1957-09/29/1977. Photographer: Don Hunstein. Sony's Love Songs highlights 14 tracks that cover the laid-back, romantic tunes Marty Robbins recorded during his lengthy tenure with Columbia, including the standards "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You," "I'm in the Mood for Love," "Misty," "All the Way," and two songs closely associated with Elvis, "Love Me Tender" and "Can't Help Falling in Love." With the wealth of Robbins material to choose from, this compilation fails to capture his first-rate romantic tracks; at the very least they could have included his 1970 hit "My Woman, My Woman, My Wife." The single-disc All-Time Greatest Hits is still the best introduction to Marty Robbins. ~ Al Campbell

"20 Love Songs" (12/28/2004) Country Gayle, Crystal, EMI Music DistributionIf we're to be honest in assessing the career of Crystal Gayle, one of the most gifted and disciplined vocalists of country music's golden era, what could be more desirable on a compilation from her than love songs? EMI (in the U.K. at least) gets it. What is wildly evident here is how Gayle possessed a voice utterly suited for the pop marketplace -- check her rendition of "Cry Me a River" -- and used the very best elements of Chet Atkins' "countrypolitain" formula to translate it to mainstream country and crossover from there. Her beautiful alto never strained for notes, was comfortable in its range, and her phrasing is impeccable no matter what song she chooses to sing. Of course her biggest hit, "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue" is here, but so are less well known gems such as her reading of Johnny Cash's "I Still Miss Someone," as well as "Going Down Slow," the shimmering soulful pop tune "I Wanna Come Back to You," and many others. There isn't a dud in the set, and Gayle's voice is at its very best on this material. Sound quality on this CD is exceptional and the price tag makes it a very appealing buy. ~ Thom Jurek

"Love Songs [Collectables]" (03/14/2006) Country Murray, Anne, Collectables RecordsCollectables' budget-line Love Songs release gathers 12 romantic themes taken from country-pop vocalist Anne Murray's late-'70s catalog on Capitol Records. While the disc contains a few recognizable cover versions, "What's Forever For," and "Dream Lover," the selection is a bit too haphazard to make the collection a good introduction. Please note that this edition includes the same track listing as the 2000 Madacy release of the same name. ~ Al Campbell

"Love Songs" (04/15/2002) Country Gayle, Crystal, EMI Gold (UK)If we're to be honest in assessing the career of Crystal Gayle, one of the most gifted and disciplined vocalists of country music's golden era, what could be more desirable on a compilation from her than love songs? "Classic Country: '80s Love Songs" (01/24/2006) Country Various Artists, Time/Life MusicLiner Note Author: Eddie Dean. Photographers: Chris Walker ; Jim Shea. Country music was in somewhat of a transitional mode in the 1980s, caught between the old Nashville countrypolitan sound, the somewhat garish urban cowboy scene (the movie had opened in 1980) and the slow, underground rise of the so-called new traditionalists, who finally broke into the open as the 1990s began alongside the Garth Brooks juggernaut. One thing that is fad-proof, though, is a good old love song, and this set from Time-Life offers some of the decade's best, including Rosanne Cash's haunting "Seven Year Ache," Ronnie Milsap's deliberately nostalgic "Lost in the Fifties (In the Still of the Night)," and Willie Nelson's brilliantly maudlin "Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground." ~ Steve Leggett

"Love Songs [2003]" (01/14/2003) Country Jones, George, Legacy RecordingsPersonnel includes: George Jones (vocals, guitar). Producer: Billy Sherrill. Compilation producer: Gregg Geller. Recorded between 1972 & 1990. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Personnel: George Jones (vocals, guitar). One of the more bittersweet entries in the Love Songs series, this collection of George Jones ballads features some of his essential songs, including "Loving You Could Never Be Better," "Once You've Had the Best," "We Can Make It," and "He Stopped Loving Her Today," as well as many other solid tracks from the early '70s and early '80s, the two peaks of Jones' collaboration with producer Billy Sherrill. Sherrill's penchant for lush strings and backing vocals gives songs like "A Picture of Me Without You," "You've Still Got a Place in My Heart," and "I'll Take You to My World" an added richness and depth, though some of the '80s productions, such as "(What Love Can Do) The Second Time Around," aren't quite as warm-sounding as the material from the '70s. "She Hung the Moon," "You Oughta Be Here With Me," and "I Always Get Lucky With You" are some of the other highlights from Love Songs. While it doesn't include enough of Jones' definitive songs to make it compare favorably to a straightforward greatest-hits collection, and a duet or two with Tammy Wynette would've been nice, Love Songs is a likeable collection of some of Jones' mellow musings on the ups and downs of love. ~ Heather Phares

"Good Old Country: Country Love Songs" (04/13/2007) Country Various Artists, St. ClairAs part of St. Clair's Good Old Country compilation series, the ten tracks on Country Love Songs provide only adequate representation of these artists at best. More than likely you're looking for the original versions of "Heartbreak U.S.A." by Kitty Wells, "Send Me the Pillow You Dream On" by Hank Locklin, and "Don't Underestimate My Love for You" by Lee Greenwood, but unfortunately these are re-recorded tracks that should be avoided. ~ Al Campbell

"Classic Country Love Songs [Box]" (10/09/2001) Country Countdown Singers, Madacy DistributionMostly taken from '70s and '80s country hits, Classic Country Love Songs is another cover album from Madacy records' house band, the Countdown Singers. These 20 songs are covered by Madacy's session musicians quite well, with several sounding almost exactly like the original. The only problem is that many of these songs are already quite dated and have lost much of their original appeal through the years. Of course, there will always be fans of this time period in the genre, but country music made some drastic changes in the late '80s/early '90s that has dated much of this material. Plus, the point of the Countdown Singers is to provide an inexpensive way to collect these songs together, but most of these songs are old enough to be quite available on most budget collections already. This album is a failure, but not for any other reason except the source material is completely wrong for the concept of the Countdown Singers. In their defense, they really do work well with country music, but with so many other collections offering the original renditions, this simply cannot be recommended. ~ Bradley Torreano

"The Heart of Country: Greatest Love Songs" (06/21/2005) Country Various Artists, Koch Records (USA)This woefully brief collection has some country love songs, sure, and there are times when Exile's "Kiss You All Over" is exactly the right song for the occasion, but nobody could seriously agree with the cover blurb that these are the greatest country love songs because, well, they just aren't. Not only that, most of the tracks here are not the original recordings but later re-renderings by the original artist. It all adds up to a pleasant but slightly faux and haphazard release. ~ Steve Leggett

"Love Songs" (04/25/2001) Country Nelson, Willie, Sony Music Distribution (USA)Producers: Chip Moman, Booker T. Jones, Fred Foster. This import collection features 16 of Willie Nelson's most sentimental songs, including his famous renditions of "Always On My Mind," "To All The Girls I've Loved Before" (with Julio Iglesias), and "Bridge Over Troubled Water." Willie Nelson achieved broad-based popularity in the late '70s and '80s by singing pop standards on a series of albums starting with 1978's Stardust. This discount-priced, ten-song compilation mixes romantic ballads largely drawn from those albums and includes well-known songs from a range of periods, dating back to the 1940s ("I Can't Begin to Tell You," "To Each His Own," "Some Enchanted Evening") and continuing up to the inclusion of those twin monuments to pompous insincerity, "Always on My Mind" and "Wind Beneath My Wings." As such, the material is more uneven than might have been hoped, but every song is given the same measured, half-spoken, oddly timed Nelson vocal performance. Any one of the full-length albums in which these recordings originated -- Without a Song, What a Wonderful World, etc. -- is recommended over this sampler. But at a modest price, it is at least a mood-setter. ~ William Ruhlmann
