"Serving 190 Proof" (09/06/1988) Country Haggard, Merle, Universal Special ProductsDigitally remastered by Glenn Meadows and Milan Bogdan. Merle Haggard's music is great for many reasons. One is Haggard's voice, among the most expressive and beautiful in all of country music. Another is his insistence on working only with top musicians whose assets include an understanding of many traditional country styles, including folk, blues, and Western swing. Most important, though, is Haggard's ability to give voice to the quiet despair of those too romantic to give up hope but too cynical to believe those hopes could ever amount to anything but heartbreak. This last ability is particularly apparent on Haggard's SERVING 190 PROOF. Whether bemoaning the grind and loneliness of life on the road ("Footlights"), describing a doomed relationship ("Got Lonely Too Early This Morning," "Driftwood," "Red Bandana"), or turning to the bottle for solace ("Heaven Was A Drink Of Wine"), Haggard expresses a longing for a serenity he knows he'll never have. As he makes clear in the deceptively upbeat "My Own Kind Of Hat," Haggard understands perfectly well where he doesn't fit in; he just can't find a place he belongs. All that separates Haggard from his audience, he seems to be saying, is his ability to transform his melancholy into art.

A celebration of early country music and its songwriters, THE PEER SESSIONS features Merle Haggard and friends informally performing a dozen classic songs from the catalog of country recording pioneer Ralph Peer's publishing company. Peer recorded such early country stars as the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers in the 1920s and '30s. Haggard sings songs by a variety of influential writers, from Texas Playboys singer Tommy Duncan, whose Western swing standard "Right or Wrong" is a highlight, to Jimmie Rodgers' "Whippin' That Old T.B." He also performs "Hang on to the Memories" with its writer, former Louisiana governor Jimmie Davis, who had a parallel career as a country music artist and also penned the evergreen "You Are My Sunshine."

"Cheatin'" (09/25/2001) Country Haggard, Merle, Capitol/EMI RecordsAll tracks have been digitally remastered. Perhaps taking a cue from Columbia's theme-centered 2000 series of Johnny Cash compilations (GOD, MURDER, LOVE), Capitol gave Merle Haggard's work a similar treatment in 2001. Like Cash, Haggard was always regarded as a poet of the working class, and the four volumes of this series (HURTIN', DRINKIN', CHEATIN', and PRISON) reflect the proletarian ethos the hard-living Haggard knows so much about. The fact that his Capitol tenure encapsulated Haggard's most commercially and aesthetically successful recording years means that much more impact for this quartet of honky-tonk treasures. CHEATIN' hones in on that most basic of country music song subjects, infidelity. The pure, unadulterated bitterness that drips from each of these ten songs is typified by the first line of the first song "I'll Always Know;" "revenge must be the reason why forgiveness was a thing I never knew." Merle's hard-hitting musical approach was always matched by his willingness to tackle unpleasant subjects with clear-eyed commitment, so he's fully qualified to dig into the scornful emotions of the cuckold's tale "Love and Honor" and the existential justifications of "It's Not Love (But it's Not Bad)"'s desperate circumstances. "My Ramona" caps off the album with its too-defensive narrator staving off inevitable romantic disappointment and making veiled threats, adding a darker tinge to CHEATIN's already grim color scheme.

"20 Number One Hits" (09/12/2000) Country Haggard, Merle, Varese (Japan)20 NUMBER ONE HITS contains re-recorded versions of Merle Haggard's classic hits. Compilation producer: Cary E. Mansfield. Recorded in 1994 & 1995. Includes liner notes by Brian Mansfield. Digitally remastered by Jim Phillips (Universal Mastering West, North Hollywood, California). Liner Note Authors: Colin Escott; Brian Mansfield. Recording information: 1994-1995. Merle Haggard is truly one of the legends of country music. Along with George Jones, Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash, Haggard has weathered personal adversity and shifting musical trends, been influential to a couple of generations of country (and rock & roll) performers, and produced a massive body of work, some of it as good as country music gets. Recorded in the mid-'90s, 20 NUMBER ONE HITS features Haggard revisiting his chart-topping favorites. With the benefits of improved recording technology, hard-won maturity, and the perspective that only time brings, he challenges himself to improve upon his best-known songs. Haggard sings with a reflective but soulful approach, looking back while firmly rooted in the present. His band's sound is lean and subdued, maintaining the classic Bakersfield sound he helped establish, with no concessions made to new country or pop trends. This set is a fitting introduction to the massive Haggard canon, and a nice look back for die-hard fans.

"The Best of Merle Haggard [St. Clair]" (04/13/2007) Country Haggard, Merle, St. ClairAuthor: Merle Haggard. Surely there should be a standard in the recording industry regarding what the "best" of a certain artist is. In this case, St. Clair has compiled ten tracks from Merle Haggard's Capitol period, all of which are stellar, but calling all of these among his best is a long shot. There are bona fide treasures here, however, and if you are not picky about sound, for the money -- dirt cheap -- this comp has some of his finest, including "Mama Tried," "I Am a Lonesome Fugitive," "Swinging Doors," and "Today I Started Loving You Again." ~ Thom Jurek

"Today I Started Loving You Again [King]" (06/17/2003) Country Haggard, Merle, KingThis best-of comprises some of Merle Haggard's biggest hits, including his first smash, "Strangers," "The Legend of Bonnie and Clyde" (the latter of which capitalized on the popularity of the movie starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway), and the semi-autobiographical "Branded Man." The title track was "Bonnie and Clyde"'s B-side, while the prison song "Sing Me Back Home" had its origins in the time Haggard spent in San Quentin in the late 1950s and early '60s. This collection of hits by country legend Merle Haggard includes both the Arthur Penn movie-inspired "Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde" and its original B-side, the country masterpiece "Today I Started Loving You Again," written by Haggard with his second wife, Bonnie Owens. There are also a couple of workingman salutes in "If We Make It Through December" and "I Take a Lot of Pride in What I Am," as well as the semi-autobiographical "Branded Man," about the stigma of a prison sentence, and the drinking song par excellence, "It's Been a Great Afternoon."
