Producer: Owen Bradley. Compilation producer: Bob Zipkin. As budget compilations go, this one actually has a reason to live; in fact, it's got a concept - Cline singing romantic ballads - that actually makes sense, both musically and thematically. It's also helpful that most of these songs were recorded around the same time (early '60s), which means that the instrumental backing - twangy guitars, the piano banging out triplets, Jordannaires style chorus vocals - has a nice consistency. Several of Cline's biggest hits are here of course ("Crazy," "Sweet Dreams," "I Fall to Pieces"), but there are also excellent, lesser known tracks including nice covers of the Duprees doo-wop classic "You Belong to Me," and Cole Porter's "True Love."

"In My Heaven" finds Shelton imagining his version of paradise, a place where there's no violence, loneliness, or dishonesty. The album's working-man-with-heart-of-gold stance, widescreen power chords, and anthemic choruses suggest that Shelton is something of a country Springsteen, but the bottleneck guitar on "My Neck of the Woods" and the honky-tonk fiddle of "Georgia in a Jug" leave little doubt as to the side of the Mason-Dixon line on which his heart resides.

"I Just Wanna Be Mad" neatly meshes a bluegrass-derived fiddle riff with pop-rock production while offering one side of an ultimately benign lover's quarrel. The title track is a roadhouse rocker that kicks off with some dirty, Stones-like guitar, and "Three Mississippi" comes off like a cross between Shawn Colvin and Mary Chapin Carpenter. While Terri Clark is surely no one's idea of a country traditionalist, she eschews the pop excess of the Faiths and Shanias of the world; PAIN TO KILL is conspicuously absent of precious, drama-filled diva ballads. Instead, Clark offers a straight-ahead amalgam of pop, light rock, and mainstream country, delivered in a direct, honest voice.

Lorrie Morgan's 1989 release LEAVE THE LIGHT ON is one of her most successful albums. It includes the chart-toppers "Trainwreck of Emotion," "Out of Your Shoes," and "Dear Me." However, these are not the only compelling tracks on this record. In fact, one of the most fascinating tunes here is Morgan's version of the Lennon/McCartney hit "Eight Days a Week." Her unruly rendition features scorching bluegrass licks from guitarist Vince Gill and fiddle virtuoso Mark O'Connor. This classic Beatles tune is further enhanced by drummer Eddie Bayers's ultra-fast snare drum beat. (He plays the ubiquitous "train rhythm" on this song.) In contrast, "He Talks to Me" is a tender love ballad. This tune revolves around a love affair in its prime, not a relationship that is riddled with heartache and woe, and the affectionate lyric brings a ray of sunshine to this largely melancholy album. Although the production is a bit dated, it doesn't detract from Morgan's ability to render heartwarming country ballads or, in the case of a few tracks, good old country rockers.

Touted as the greatest country singer ever, Hall Of Famer George Jones is in his prime on this album of duets and hits. Obviously having fun with every cut, Jones sings with rockers, classic country ladies and the cream of the contemporary crop. Marty Stuart starts the album with a spirited, honky-tonk bang ("One Woman Man"), with Jones hitting some delicious, resonant deep notes. Dolly Parton harmonizes with Trisha Yearwood and Emmylou Harris in what, for her, is the latest of many great vocal trios, joining Jones in "Where The Grass Won't Grow." A couple of Jones' early rockabilly hits are represented here--"Why Baby Why" with Ricky Skaggs on high harmonies, and "White Lightnin'" with Mark Knopfler adding white-hot guitar and strong harmonies. Ex-wife Tammy Wynette reunites with Jones to reprise their '70s hit "Golden Ring." Mark Chesnutt trades off eerily similar vocals with Jones on "Good Ones And Bad Ones." Not surprisingly, Rolling Stone Keith Richard can easily pass for a cowboy drowning in his beer on "Say It's Not You." Vince Gill, usually known for tender ballads, rocks out with Jones on "The Love Bug," while Alan Jackson slows it down with "A Good Year For The Roses." This odd little compilation of lighthearted Johnny Cash songs proves that the Man In Black didn't always confine himself to somber subjects. Suitable both for older kids and grown-ups who feel like a dose of oddball humor, it highlights the country legend's lighter side--the most well-known of the songs is his get-tough-or-die hit "A Boy Named Sue." "Everybody Loves a Nut" is pure Ray Stevens-type 1960s Nashville tomfoolery, while Cash and band sound like they're having a great time on his spoof tearjerker, "Flushed From the Bathroom of Your Heart." "Look At Them Beans" is the singer's country remake of Joe Tex's R&B homily, "Papa's Dream," while "One Piece At a Time," the story of a car built out of purloined parts, was another hit, topping the country charts in the mid-'70s.

Recorded in 2003 for his own Hag label, HAGGARD LIKE NEVER BEFORE is an interesting assembly of Haggard originals, like the road-weary title track and the sardonic (and, at the time, controversial) modern-life commentary "That's the News." Non-Haggard covers include blues songs like "Garbage Man" and a re-recording of his mid-'60s duet with Bonnie Owens, "Reno Blues," done this time with Willie Nelson. Though it's perhaps not his most memorable collection, HAGGARD finds the country legend in remarkably feisty form for a 67-year-old.well into his fifth decade as a performer.
