"The Definitive Collection [Remaster]" (06/22/2004) Country Cline, Patsy, MCA NashvilleLiner Note Author: Bud Scoppa. For many legendary artists, it's difficult to choose what material should be commemorated on a best-of compilation. The tough question inevitably arises, "What does one leave out?" Because Patsy Cline died tragically in an airplane crash at the age of 30, she left behind only about 100 songs. Nonetheless, the compilers of the single-disc DEFINITIVE COLLECTION must have still had to make difficult decisions here, since the genius of Cline was that once she sang a tune, not only did she make it her own, she turned it into an ineradicable hit. THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION presents many of these chart-toppers, including the classic singles "Walkin' After Midnight," "She's Got You," and "I Fall to Pieces." Of particular note, this album contains Cline's original version of "Walkin' After Midnight," not the 1961 remake that is heard on the ever-popular GREATEST HITS. Of course, Willie Nelson's "Crazy" is also included on this album, as are many other Cline favorites. If you are looking to buy a well-thought-out anthology of Patsy Cline, THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION is the perfect choice.

A tribute to one of the premier female country artists of the 20th century surely seems a natural for contemporary country singers like Martina McBride, Terri Clark, and Lee Ann Womack. When you stop to recall that Patsy Cline was, in fact, most famous for bridging the gap between country and pop, the presence of Norah Jones, Natalie Cole, and Michelle Branch makes just as much sense. It's no shock that Jones and Diana Krall jazz it up in properly torchy fashion on "Why Can't He Be You" and "Crazy," respectively. But it's k.d. lang who pulls off a neat trick by stealing the show from them with a jazz-inflected treatment of "Leavin' on Your Mind." While most of the country girls on REMEMBERING PATSY CLINE keep things expectedly earthy, it's Martina McBride who takes it the furthest afield with her album-closing a cappella "Sweet Dreams (Of You)," where her voice is supported only by some complex, Take 6-style vocal harmonies.

"The Essential First Recordings" (06/08/2004) Country Cline, Patsy, Varese (Japan)Liner Note Authors: Laurence Zwisohn; Larry Zwisohn. Recording information: 06/01/1955-01/27/1960. Photographer: Les Leverett. The songs heard on this compilation represent the "early" to "middle" periods of Patsy Cline's singing career. Although she was only active as a recording artist for eight years, Cline embarked on a musical run yielded different eras based on variances in production styles and repertoire. THE ESSENTIAL FIRST RECORDINGS largely consists of b-sides that never charted. With a few exceptions, the songs here were recorded prior to Cline's countrypolitan era, a time when string orchestras, harder-hitting drummers, and background singers were brought into the studio. Fine examples of this spare, twangy earlier style include 1955's "Hidin' Out" and 1956's "I Cried All the Way to the Altar." Only two chart-toppers appear on this disc, the lovely "A Poor Man's Roses (Or a Rich Man's Gold)" and the timeless, sauntering "Walkin' After Midnight" (the latter being Cline's breakthrough hit). For anybody who's interested in digging deeper into the Cline catalog, this collection is a great study.

"Volume 2: Legendary Patsy" (05/18/2004) Oldies Cline, Patsy, Madacy DistributionNot to be confused with THE LEGENDARY PATSY CLINE on Pair Records or THE LEGENDARY PATSY CLINE on Special Music, although Platinum's compilation includes just as little documentation (no writer's credits, session personnel, or recording dates) as those other releases. Like them, this set consists of material recorded in the first part of Cline's career, her five-year stint with Four Star (1955-1960). As an untried artist, Cline was put through the paces of trying her voice at various styles to see what would hit with the public. Fortunately, she worked consistently with Owen Bradley, one of the most innovative and talented Nashville producers around. Bradley tried gospel ("Life's Railway to Heaven"), R&B ("Today, Tomorrow and Forever"), and proven country material ("Lovesick Blues") as well as straight honky-tonk like "Crazy Dreams" and "A Church, A Courtroom, And Then Goodbye." Eventually they discovered that Patsy's greatest strength lay in an early '60s cocktail of popular and Tin Pan Alley material, strings, and backup vocals, best represented by MCA's reissue of the Decca LP set THE PATSY CLINE STORY. Meanwhile, on this collection, the steel guitars still whine, the guitars still twang, and one of country's greatest legends still sounds country.
