"The Steel Guitar Tribute to Garth Brooks" (09/03/2002) Country Various Artists, CMH RecordsPerformers include: Charlie Terrell (acoustic guitar); Scott Ferguson (guitar, slide guitar, dobro); Jesse Harris (pedal steel guitar); Jimmy Whalen (guitar); Doug Nahory (piano); J Swanson (upright bass); Jim Doyle (drums). Personnel: Scott Ferguson (guitar, slide guitar, dobro); Jimmy Whalen (guitar); Charlie Terrell (acoustic guitar); Doug Nahory (piano); J. Swanson (upright bass); Jim Doyle (drums). Audio Mixers: J. Swanson; Bruce Witkin. Recording information: Pop Squad Studios. Arranger: J. Swanson. In a series of bluegrass tributes to everyone from Brooks & Dunn to the String Cheese Incident, CMH has been determined to prove that given the proper instruments, all music has a bit of tradition in it. With The Steel Guitar Tribute to Garth Brooks, CMH seems equally resolute in its desire to do the same thing with the steel guitar family of instruments. While the pedal steel would be the obvious choice for a tribute to a country musician, instrumentals like "Why Ain't I Runnin'" and "Shameless," dominated by Jesse Harris' pedal steel, actually seem more country than the originals. Others, like "Papa Loved Mama" and "Beer Run," veer closer to Southern rock by adding a healthy dose of slide guitar. Other Brooks favorites show up along the way, including "Friends in Low Places," "What She's Doing Now," and "The Thunder Rolls." The arrangements are fairly straightforward, with bass, drums, and rhythm guitar backing up either a dobro, pedal steel, or slide guitar. As has been traditional on CMH releases, the final piece, "Keepin' the Dream Alive," is an original composition. The Steel Guitar Tribute to Garth Brooks should appeal to both Brooks' fans and steel guitar lovers. If one happens to like both, then he or she can only hope that volume two is close behind. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

"Golden Steel Guitar Hits/Steel and Strings *" (10/10/1994) Country Day, Jimmy, Bear Family (Germany)This CD contains 24 tracks from 1962 and a 20 page booklet. Jimmy Day's talent as a steel guitarist is indisputable, and this import two-fer reissues his 1962 instrumental albums Golden Steel Guitar Hits and Steel & Strings on one disc. The albums were recorded under the direction of Shelby Singleton and Jerry Kennedy and feature an all-star cast of Nashville A-team accompanists. Like fellow steel guitarist Noel Boggs, Day could venture into easy listening territory as evidenced on the Steel & Strings album, which is indistinguishable from the music of 101 Strings. The mellow mood is exacerbated by the use a vocal chorus on both albums (which isn't necessarily bad, but isn't what many buyers would expect). The fluid steel guitar solos make it all worthwhile, though, and Day certainly deserves the spotlight. ~ Greg Adams

"Blues Yodeler and Steel Guitar Wizard" (11/05/1996) Country Carlisle, Cliff, ArhooliePersonnel: Cliff Carlisle (vocals, guitar). Liner Note Author: Mark A. Humphrey. Recording information: 02/1930-07/1937. Editor: Chris Strachwitz. This excellent compilation of 24 sides from the 1930s presents Carlisle in a variety of settings, including tracks on which his steel guitar is the only accompaniment, and slightly fuller arrangements with Wilbur Ball on backup guitar and harmony. As a yodeler, Carlisle did not shy away from risqu? lyrics, but that was only one facet of his repertoire, which also included hobo songs and standards. It's like hearing Jimmie Rodgers with first-rate steel guitar, and indeed this will probably appeal mightily to Rodgers fans, as well as some listeners who don't even have any Rodgers discs. ~ Richie Unterberger

"Steel Guitar" (03/22/2005) Country West, Speedy, Sundazed Music Inc.Personnel: Speedy West (pedal steel guitar); Eddie Kirk, Jimmy Bryant Singers, Jimmy Bryant, Billy Strange (guitar); Les Taylor (piano); Cliffie Stone (bass guitar); Muddy Berry, Pee Wee Adams, Muddy Berry (drums); Harold Hensley (fiddle); Billy Liebert (accordion, piano, organ); Roy Harte (drums). Liner Note Authors: Cliffie Stone; Rich Kienzle. Recording information: Capitol Studios, Hollywood, CA (01/10/1950-06/14/1955). Along with partner and guitarist Jimmy Bryant, pedal steel virtuoso Speedy West played on several thousand sides and worked with hundreds of vocalists including Ernest Tubb, Loretta Lynn, Frank Sinatra, Jim Reeves, Tennessee Ernie Ford, and Bing Crosby. West's sometimes histrionic and cartoon-like playing is easily recognizable and comes out of his total command of the instrument. In fact, due to their wild flights and seamless interplay, many observers have labeled West and Bryant the Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie of country. West's innovative use of bebop licks and phrasing is certainly heard often on this 1960 solo record for Capitol. In particular, cuts like "Caffeine Patrol" and "Flippin' the Lid" find him in a briskly swinging mood and even trading fours with his guitarist (no credits are listed for the album). Of course, considering his vast studio resume, West delves into a variety of genres and styles here, including western swing, Hawaiian music, sentimental cowboy ballads, and blues. And thankfully, West never overdoes the guitar pyrotechnics; his occasional zinger and slinky-toy flourishes are always dropped strategically. Maybe not as crucial a first disc purchase as one of the two fine compilations on Razor & Tie (which also feature Bryant), but still a very fine album. ~ Stephen Cook

"Renaissance of the Steel String Guitar *" (04/13/2004) Country Crary, Dan, The Tricopolis GroupPersonnel: John Cephas, Beppe Gambetta (guitar); Sam Bush, Carlo Aonzo (mandolin); Billy Oskay (violin, viola); Loretto Reid (pennywhistle); Phil Wiggins, Grant Dermody (harmonica); Bob Leon (piano); Tarik Banzi (djembe, percussion). Audio Mixer: Billy Oskay. Liner Note Author: Dan Crary. Recording information: Big Red Studio, Corbett, OR; Cedar House Studio, Franklin, TN. Arrangers: Dan Crary; Billy Oskay. While Dan Crary occasionally enlists the help of others to flesh out the sound, he's more or less a one-man guitar ensemble. Unlike many working within new acoustic music (David Grisman), he's a virtuoso who likes to go it alone. He doesn't mind, however, multi-tracking guitar parts to create a rich, full sound on Renaissance of the Steel String Guitar. If it seems a bit gutsy to name your own album "Renaissance" anything, Crary justifies the use of the term within his first two compositions. Both "Senso Unico" and "In Flagrante" begin with fairly simple guitar parts, first on one track, then on the other, and quickly build like carefully constructed suites. The word "suite," however, shouldn't lead one to think Crary's fretwork is overly formal. The real fun of Renaissance is the vitality he is able to extract from carefully arranged pieces like "Banderilla" and "Lobelia Blue," guaranteeing that his music will never be mistaken for easy listening. There are numerous guest appearances by Beppe Gambetta, Sam Bush, and Billy Oskay. Crary's extensive liner notes on the rich history of the guitar reveal that besides being a great guitarist, he's also pretty darn smart. Renaissance of the Steel String Guitar will be greeted by guitar enthusiasts with open ears. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr.

Photographer: Robert Stone. Arrangers: Fayette Coney; Henry Nelson; Aubrey Ghent. Sacred Steel is one amazing collection. Subtitled "Traditional Sacred African-American Steel Guitar Music in Florida," this multi-artist chronicling of this seldom-heard genre is a musical and emotional delight. The electric lap steel guitar has been the instrument of choice in both the Jewel Dominion and Keith Dominions (both African-American Holiness-Pentecostal churches) since the late '30s, replacing the traditional church organist. This collection showcases the pioneering work of five of its best known and most influential sacred steel practitioners: Willie Eason, Sonny Treadway, Glenn Lee, Henry Nelson, and his son, Aubrey Ghent. Their individual approaches to this style range from crude blues-based slides and slurs (blues table steel master Hop Wilson is called to mind more than once here) to highly technical flourishes bordering on country pedal steel sounds, with all of it played with a sincerity and spirit indigenous to the music, which is nothing short of heartfelt and energetic. Split evenly between instrumentals and the instrument interfacing with the congregation and choir at live religious services, the music runs the gamut from still and beautiful (Sonny Treadway's instrumentals) to the wild and abandoned playing of Aubrey Ghent. This is 75 minutes of music that will appeal to blues and gospel and even retro-minded rock & roll fans willing to take the time to explore this fascinating genre. ~ Cub Koda

"Steel Guitar" (1991) Country Emmons, Buddy, Flying FishPersonnel: Buddy Emmons (pedal steel guitar); Leon Rhodes, Dale Sellers (guitar); Johnny Gimble (fiddle, mandola); Michale Melford (mandolin); Bunky Keels, Ron Oates (piano); Mike Leach, Bud Logan (bass); Karl Himmel, Kenny Malone (drums, percussion). Recorded at Music City Recorders, Nashville, Tennessee. The versatility of Buddy Emmons would never be questioned. Given the opportunity to do whatever he wanted on an album in a period when many listeners were waiting, their tongues hanging out, for the next bold innovation in country-flavored instrumental music, he convened two completely different groups to back him up. With one, he established his abilities to play traditional country and Western swing material as if he was regaining the heavyweight championship; each of his solos on these pieces is delivered with that type of combination of punches, and it is a good thing he hired a bona fide genius, guitarist Leon Rhodes, to play with him on these tracks since there are few other players who would be able to follow him up. If this album consisted totally of pieces such as the wonderful "Medley" of steel guitar favorites or the work-up of "Orange Blossom Special" on which Emmons is endlessly inventive, then it would receive the highest rating. On the second side there is the equivalent of rocks in bags of potatoes, however, a band who goes for a somewhat more contemporary feel, coming across like some kind of wedding band in the process. Sure, this is the type of wedding band where some of the music types in attendance would be commenting on how good the pedal steel player is, and the drumming of Kenny Malone is crisp-sounding and effective. Something about this music just grates, however, and yes, there are wedding bands who play "Nothing Is Delivered" by Bob Dylan, and better than on this record to boot. Still, everything described up until now was still not quite enough for the maestro, who chose to bring the album to an unforgettable conclusion by overdubbing himself to create a version of "Canon in D Major" by Johann Pachelbel that rectifies the situation, makes one restore the check next to the album's name that might have been angrily erased while listening to "Top Heavy." In fact, it could be said that this wonderful classical performance is one of the truly liberating moments in music from the perspective of any possible triumph over genre fascism. Here there is a so-called lowbrow country & western musician playing European art music on an electric instrument, no less. The results are sheer genius, a contemplative and almost spiritual performance in which there is as much exquisitely small detail as any of the classics of minimalism. That the same person can be responsible for all the tracks on this record is one of the mysteries of the universe -- but hey, that's Nashville. ~ Eugene Chadbourne

"Christmas Sounds of the Steel Guitar" (1990) Country Emmons, Buddy, Step One RecordsPersonnel: Buddy Emmons (steel guitars), Jimmy Capps (guitar), Bunky Keels (piano), Rodger Morris, Gary Prim (keyboards), David Smith (bass), Gene Chrisman (drums), Russell Mauldin, Beverly Darhall, Ellen Dockery (background vocals). Recorded at Oak Valley Studio, Nashville, Tennessee. Personnel: Buddy Emmons (vocals, steel guitar); Russell Mauldin, Beverly Darhall, Ellen Dockery (vocals); Bunky Keels (piano); Gary Prim, Rodger Morris (keyboards); Gene Chrisman (drums). Liner Note Author: Buddy Emmons. Arranger: Buddy Emmons. Buddy Emmons was one of the great steel guitarists, and it's always a pleasure to hear him play, even on an album as run-of-the-mill as Christmas Sounds of the Steel Guitar. Certainly, he plays well throughout the record, and it is a pleasurable listen, but the arrangements and tunes are too predictable for it to truly be a compelling record, even by Christmas standards. Still, hardcore Emmons fans may enjoy it, providing they can find it at a reasonable price. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
