When I Call Your Name by Vince Gill (CD - 11/14/1989)
"When I Call Your Name" (11/14/1989) Country Gill, Vince, MCA Records (USA)Though it announced Vince Gill's arrival as a major solo artist, WHEN I CALL YOUR NAME, the Oklahoma native's 1989 debut for MCA, was hardly the beginning of his career. With a reputation as both proficient guitarist and singer, Gill performed with many country acts (including Pure Prairie League and Rodney Crowell) and recorded several albums prior to this release. Still, Gill's earnest, charming persona found a perfect match in laid-back, pop-inflected tunes such as the gorgeous title track (featuring Patty Loveless) and the aching "Never Knew Lonely." WHEN I CALL YOUR NAME also features a rollicking nod to old-fashioned country on "Oklahoma Swing," a lively duet with Reba McEntire that also serves to showcase Gill's formidable six-string skills. Eventually going double platinum, the record cemented Gill's status as a star, and kicked off a remarkably successful run that would culminate in '92's I STILL BELIEVE IN YOU.
These Days [Box] by Vince Gill (CD - 10/17/2006)
"These Days [Box]" (10/17/2006) Country Gill, Vince, MCA NashvillePersonnel include: Vince Gill (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Dan Tyminski, Del McCoury, Diana Krall, Emmylou Harris, Gretchen Wilson, Guy Clark, Jenny Gill, John Anderson , LeAnn Rimes, Lee Ann Womack, Alison Krauss, Michael McDonald, Amy Grant, Patty Loveless, Phil Everly, Rebecca Lynn Howard, Rodney Crowell, Trisha Yearwood, Bekka Bramlett, Sheryl Crow, Katrina Elam, Bonnie Raitt (vocals); Tom Bukovac (electric guitar); John Hobbs (piano); Pete Wasner (Wurlitzer piano, Hammond b-3 organ); Michael Rhodes (bass instrument); Chad Cromwell (drums); The Del McCoury Band. Not since Prince released the three-hour, three-CD set EMANCIPATION in 1996 or the Magnetic Fields took a similar number of discs for the sprawling 69 LOVE SONGS in 1999 has an artist attempted something as expansive as Vince Gill's THESE DAYS. A four-disc box set of all new material, nearly all of it Gill originals, THESE DAYS is possibly the widest-ranging country album of the modern era. The four discs are thematically and stylistically arranged. Disc one, WORKIN' ON A BIG CHILL, is a 1960s-flavored rock-and-roll album that recalls Bob Dylan's late '60s work with the Band and features Bonnie Bramlett's vocals on several songs. Disc two, THE REASON WHY, is a modern pop record in the style of Shania Twain's international releases, with several duet partners including Sheryl Crow and Leann Rimes. Disc three, SOME THINGS NEVER GET OLD, is straight honky-tonk in the Ray Price and Lefty Frizzell tradition. Finally, disc four, LITTLE BROTHER, is a strictly acoustic bluegrass and folk album that cuts Gill's writing and singing to its most elemental. Taken together, the four albums reveal Vince Gill to be one of modern country's most impressive performers.

Let's Make Sure We Kiss Goodbye by Vince Gill (CD - 04/18/2000)
"Let's Make Sure We Kiss Goodbye" (04/18/2000) Country Gill, Vince, MCA NashvillePersonnel: Vince Gill (vocals, acoustic, electric & gut-string guitars, banjo, mandolin); Amy Grant (vocals); Brent Mason (acoustic & electric guitars); George Marinelli (electric guitar, mandolin); Randy Scruggs (gut-string guitar); Andrea Zorn (fiddle, viola); Mickey Raphael (harmonica); John Horn, Barry Green, Mike Haynes (horns); Steve Nathan, Michael Omartian (piano, keyboards); Willie Weeks (bass); John Hammond (drums); Robert Bailey, Vicki Hampton, Kim Fleming, The Katinas, Jeff White, Jenny Gill, Beth Nielsen Chapman, Billy Thomas, Thom Flora, Bekka Bramlett, Andrea Zonn, Leslie Satcher (background vocals). LET'S MAKE SURE WE KISS GOODBYE was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Country Album, "Feels Like Love" was nominated for Best Male Country Vocal Performance, for Best Country Song and "When I Look Into Your Heart" was nominated for Best Country Collaboration With Vocals. When most guys fall in love, only their families and close friends know how happy they are. With LET'S MAKE SURE WE KISS GOODBYE, Vince Gill lets the whole world know exactly how ecstatic he is. Gill wrote and recorded this album a few months before marrying singer Amy Grant, and he might as well have called it "Vince & Amy 4-Ever." In 11 out of the 12 tracks, Gill celebrates his love for Grant from every angle. In joyous, upbeat tracks like "Feels Like Love" and "Shoot Straight From Your Heart," and in slower tunes like "For the Last Time," "One" and the sexy "Little Things," he describes in detail how her love has healed him, uplifted him and made him a better person. Grant herself joins him in the duet "When I Look Into Your Heart;" she also co-wrote one of the album's standouts, the soulful "Look What Love's Revealing." This outpouring of love only stops for the CD's touching final track, "Hey God," a tribute to the late golfer Payne Stewart. Despite its gushiness, LET'S MAKE SURE WE KISS GOODBYE is a typical high-quality Vince Gill album--just don't listen to it if your love life's not going well.

High Lonesome Sound by Vince Gill (CD - 05/28/1996)

Mullen, Patty Loveless, Shelby Lynne, Bekka Bramlett, Robert Bailey, Billy Thomas, Chris Rodriguez , Kim Fleming, Kim Richey (background vocals). Recording information: Masterfonics, Nashville, Tennessee. Although Vince Gill is renowned as a country performer, the Oklahoma native actually got his start playing in traditional bluegrass bands. This 1996 album finds Gill getting back in touch with his roots without abandoning his easy-going, pop-tinged style. In fact, although much of the record features a pleasant, down-home vibe, only the title track, which appears in two versions, boasts a decent shot of true bluegrass. While the first rendition of the tune shines a spotlight of Gill's adept guitar playing, the second take has Alison Krauss and Union Station lending their instrumental expertise to the lilting number. Other highlights of HIGH LONESOME SOUND include the Lyle Lovett-esque "One Dance with You," the gentle "Pretty Little Adriana," and the lovelorn "Worlds Apart." Though Gill's albums were no longer hitting multi-platinum marks by this point, HIGH LONESOME SOUND reveals that the singer/songwriter was willing to follow his muse, regardless of commercial appeal or Nashville trends.

The Key by Vince Gill (Cassette - 08/11/1998)
"The Key" (08/11/1998) Country Gill, Vince, MCA NashvillePersonnel includes: Vince Gill, Patty Loveless (vocals); Dawn Sears, Dennis William Wilson, Lisa Silver, Marabeth Jordan, John Mark Ivey, Lisa Cochran, Michael Eldred, Sara Evans, Lee Ann Womack, Liana Manis, Curtis Young, Shelby Lynne, Jeff White, Billy Thomas, Sonya Isaacs, Alison Krauss, Faith Hill (background vocals). All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. "If You Ever Have Forever In Mind" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance and was nominated for Best Country Song. "My Kind Of Woman/My Kind Of Man" was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Country Collaboration With Vocals. "Don't Come Cryin' To Me" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. Vince Gill's THE KEY is essentially a crash course on the history of country music. Inspired by the death of his father to return to the classic country of his youth, Gill has created a primer of traditional country styles. Each song highlights a different style, from Western swing and the Bakersfield sound to waltzes and great male/female duets. But Gill's talents as a guitarist and vocalist keep THE KEY hanging together as a unified whole. Guest vocalists Faith Hill, Lee Ann Womack, Sara Evans and Alison Krauss are used to great effect--particularly Womack, on the jukebox weeper "Kindly Keep It Country." A standout is "My Kind of Woman/My Kind of Man," Vince's first full-fledged duet with Patty Loveless. But the album's centerpiece is Gill's autobiographical song about his dad, "The Key to Life." It underscores the fact that, as well as being a fine album, THE KEY is also a heartfelt tribute to the man who first inspired Gill to make music.
Breath of Heaven: A Christmas Collection With Patrick Williams and His Orchestra by Vince Gill (Cass
"Breath of Heaven: A Christmas Collection With Patrick Williams and His Orchestra" (09/01/2001) Country Gill, Vince, MCA NashvillePersonnel includes: Vince Gill (vocals, guitar); George Doering, Dean Parks (guitar); Mike Lang (piano); Michael Omartian (keyboards, percussion); Chuck Berghofer (bass); Gregg Field (drums); Larry Bunker (percussion); The Patrick Williams Orchestra. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. BREATH OF HEAVEN: A CHRISTMAS COLLECTION WITH PATRICK WILLIAMS AND HIS ORCHESTRA was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. "Breath Of Heaven (Mary's Song)" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocal(s). This is a DTS CD, which features DTS 5.1 Surround Sound technology and is playable on a DTS-capable 5.1 Surround Sound system. Vince Gill does Sinatra? Well, sort of. His second holiday collection, BREATH OF HEAVEN is a collaboration with Ol' Blue Eyes' former arranger Patrick Williams, and Gill describes it as his chance to "be like Nat King Cole or Sinatra, and snap my fingers and drink martinis." Replace "martinis" with "eggnog" and you've got an apt description of what is surely one of the most original Christmas country albums ever. Gill, a prodigious guitar player and songwriter, does neither on BREATH OF HEAVEN. He simply applies his high, sweet voice to a range of timeless standards, from "Silver Bells" to "O Come All Ye Faithful," many of which have been recast in a Sinatra/Dean Martin style. On secular numbers like "Winter Wonderland" and especially "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow," Gill has a swingin' time with the jazzy, loose-limbed arrangements. On the religious material like "A Cradle In Bethlehem" and the Amy Grant-penned title track, his voice takes on a hushed reverence that stands out against the massed voices of the backing choir. And when Gill soars to hit the high notes on the goosebump-inducing "O Holy Night," you really can "hear the angel voices."
Turn Me Loose by Vince Gill (Cassette - 05/10/1994)
Pocket Full of Gold by Vince Gill (Cassette - 03/05/1991)
"Pocket Full of Gold" (03/05/1991) Country Gill, Vince, MCA Records (USA)By the time POCKET FULL OF GOLD was released in 1991, Vince Gill was a full-fledged country superstar, thanks to the runaway success of WHEN I CALL YOUR NAME. While GOLD sticks with the strengths of its predecessor, it also proves to be a slightly more dynamic outing, with more upbeat moments added to the mix, including the twangy opener, "I Quit" (which recalls the contemporaneous work of Dwight Yoakam), the rollicking "A Little Left Over" (a showcase for Gill's deft guitar playing), and the sunny, romantic "Sparkle." The Oklahoma-born singer/songwriter also eases into a handful of affecting ballads, most notably the melancholy title track and "The Strings That Tie You Down," which rides a slow, steady pop-influenced beat. Gill's knack for adding pop/rock elements into his music without compromising its country credibility is one of his finest talents, and it's highlighted remarkably well on this solid and entertaining album.

When Love Finds You by Vince Gill (Cassette - 06/07/1994)
"When Love Finds You" (06/07/1994) Country Gill, Vince, MCA Records (USA)Personnel: Vince Gill (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar, mandolin); Randy Scruggs (acoustic guitar); Steuart Smith (guitar); John Hughey (steel guitar); Stuart Duncan (fiddle); Barry Beckett, Matt Rollings (piano); John Barlow Jarvis (piano, electric piano, Hammond B-3, keyboards, synthesizer); Steve Nathan (Hammond B-3); Pete Wasner (Wurlitzer, keyboards, synthesizer); Willie Weeks, Michael Rhodes (bass); Carlos Vega, Milton Sledge (drums); Tom Roady (percussion). Background vocals: Billy Thomas, Jonell Mosser, Jeff White. Recorded at Soundstage Studios, Nashville, Tennessee. All songs written or co-written by Vince Gill. "When Love Finds You" won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. "When Love Finds You" was also nominated for Best Country Song, and WHEN LOVE FINDS YOU was nominated for Best Country Album. "Go Rest High On That Mountain" won 1996 Grammy Awards for Best Male Country Vocal Performance and Best Country Song. "Go Rest High On That Mountain" won the 1996 Country Music Association Award for Song Of The Year. A country singer who melts hearts with his voice, and not with tight jeans and a big hat, is a rare commodity. Vince Gill, who possesses one of the most beautiful voices in popular music, effectively distills the varied elements of country music's roots and has become Nashville's leading man. Gill, a bluegrass virtuoso and rock guitar master (he was asked to join Dire Straits), has created a niche for himself as the man who best gives voice to the pain of heartache and longing through his spine-tingling high notes. This Oklahoma tenor melds his harmonies with the likes of Patty Loveless and Trisha Yearwood and comes out with a single-voiced backdrop for some of country's most intense heartbreak ballads. His athletic guitar solos on the up-beat cuts, "What The Cowgirls Do" and "South Side Of Dixie" (a Southern version of "California Girls"), are a perfect counterpoint to the soaring, soulful, ethereal ballads like "When Love Finds You." Vince and his wife, Janis (of Sweethearts Of The Rodeo), even share an autobiographical writing collaboration on "Maybe Tonight." Gill's closing song, his original, modern spiritual, "Go Rest On The Mountain," sums it up the best, when he sings, "I wish I could see the angel's faces, when they hear your sweet voice." Sweet voice, indeed.
Next Big Thing by Vince Gill (Cassette - 02/11/2003)
"Next Big Thing" (02/11/2003) Country Gill, Vince, MCA NashvillePersonnel: Vince Gill (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, mandolin); Al Anderson (acoustic & electric guitars); Mac McAnally (acoustic guitar); Dean Parks (electric guitar); Tom Britt (slide guitar); John Hughley (steel guitar); Stuart Duncan (fiddle); Jim Hoke (autoharp, harmonica, accordion); The Nashville String Machine (strings); Kirk Whalam (alto saxophone); Jim Horn (baritone saxophone); Charles Rose (trumpet); Steve Herrman (trombone); Pete Wasner, John Hobbs (keyboards); Willie Weeks (bass); Chad Cromwell (drums); Eric Darken (percussion); Amy Grany, Lee Ann Womack, Dawn Sears, Leslie Satcher, Billy Thomas, Harry Stinson, Bekka Bramlett, Kim Keyes, Jenny Gill, Emmylou Harris, Michael McDonald, Andrea Zonn, Jeff White (background vocals). Recorded at Ocean Way, Seventeen Grand and Sound Kitchen Studios, Nashville, Tennessee. "Next Big Thing" won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. This album's title is an ironic one, since Vince Gill has spent plenty of time as the Big Thing in country music. He started out as a hot-pickin' bluegrass guitarist before going solo in the mid-'80s. Some 20 years down the line, Gill has nothing to prove but still plenty to say. As always, his sound is a mix of Rodney Crowell-style '80s New Traditionalism, white soul, and pop, with a touch of that bluegrass influence coming through in his keening tenor. He's still the Mr. Nice Guy of contemporary country, soft-pedaling both the songs and the singing in a manner not unlike the Timothy B. Schmit portion of the Eagles' catalogue. "Young Man's Town" ups the soul influence and adds a touch of Springsteen sentimentalism, while the aptly named "Old Time Fiddle" shows Gill's traditional roots, and "Without You" ventures into Ray Price-meets-Bob Wills territory. The marimba-laden "We Had it All" is something of a Marty Robbins update, and things close out tastefully with the gentle, soulfully sung "In These Last Few Days." If you're looking for gaudy power ballads or rock with a cowboy hat, try elsewhere. Honest emotions delivered with class are still a BIG THING with Gill.
