"Yesterday's Wine [Remaster]" (08/05/2003) Country Nelson, Willie, BMG HeritagePersonnel: Willie Nelson (vocals, guitar); Jerry Stembridge, Herman Wade, Jr., Dave Kirby, David Zettner (guitar); Weldon Myrick (steel guitar); Bobby Thompson (banjo); Norman K. Spicher (fiddle); Charlie McCoy (harmonica); Hargus "Pig" Robbins (piano, organ); Roy M. Huskey, Jr. (bass); Willie Ackerman, Jerry Carrigan (drums). Recorded at RCA's "Nashville Sound" Studio, Nashville, Tennessee in May 1971. Includes liner notes by Rich Kienzle. Originally released on RCA. Originally released in 1971, YESTERDAY'S WINE was Willie Nelson's final album at RCA Records, for whom he recorded between 1965 and 1971. The album also marked Willie's farewell from Nashville--after a frustrating decade in Music City, Nelson packed up and moved back to Texas before YESTERDAY'S WINE was released. Adding to its historical significance, YESTERDAY'S WINE is also the first Willie Nelson "concept" album and thus paved the way for PHASES AND STAGES, RED HEADED STRANGER, and other Nelson classics. YESTERDAY'S WINE tells the story of a man watching his own funeral and reflecting on his life. The album includes a number of Nelson standards, among them the title track, "Family Bible," "December Day," and a perfect kiss-off to Nashville, "Me and Paul." The all-star studio band includes "Pig" Robbins on piano, Charlie McCoy on harmonica and Roy Huskey Jr. on bass, but because Nelson wrote most of the material the weekend prior to recording, both the playing and arrangements are muted. A great album that foreshadows the path Nelson would follow to superstardom.

"The Great Willie Nelson" (04/06/2004) Country Nelson, Willie, Madacy DistributionThis double-CD collection of Willie Nelson classics features tracks recorded as publishers' demos, as well as songs that Nelson recorded for the Liberty label in the early 1960s, in an ultimately futile quest to make it as a solo artist in Nashville. The stripped down, primitive quality of many of these recordings naturally accentuates Nelson's quirky phrasing and attractively weathered voice, focusing attention on the songs, which include the miniature gem "A Moment Isn't Very Long," the sentimental "Home Is Where You're Happy," and the acidic "Blame It on the Times."

"Oh Boy Records Classics Presents: Willie Nelson" (10/17/2000) Country Nelson, Willie, Oh BoyIncludes liner notes by Harlan Howard. Digitally remastered by Denny Purcell (Georgetown Masters, Nashville, Tennessee). Liner Note Author: Harlan Howard. Editor: Carlos Grier. Photographer: Connie Nelson. Although the CD booklet has next to no information about when these tracks were recorded, they appear to date from the early '60s, around the time that Nelson's songs started to be covered by other artists and he began to record for Liberty Records. Some of these are full-bore studio efforts, like a nice honky-tonkish version of "Crazy" with great piano and steel guitar; others are obvious demos, like "Country Willie" and "Three Days," which are just Nelson and an acoustic guitar. Highlights include gorgeous full-band versions of "Funny How Time Slips Away" and "Pretty Paper" (a 1964 hit for Roy Orbison).

"The Essential Willie Nelson [Columbia] [Limited]" (04/01/2003) Country Nelson, Willie, Legacy RecordingsThis CD commemorates Willie Nelson's 70th Birthday (April 30, 2003). Personnel includes: Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Emmylou Harris, Ray Price, Leann Womack, Julio Iglesias, Leon Russell, Merle Haggard, Aerosmith. Producers include: Felton Jarvis, Arif Mardin, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Booker T. Jones. Compilation producers: Nich Shaffman, Al Quaglieri. Recorded between 1961 & 2002. Audio Mixers: Michael Brauer; Steven Berkowitz. Recording information: ??/1961-12/2001. The catalog of Willie Nelson is so vast and rich that assembling an "essential" collection of only one or two discs seems nearly impossible. RCA's single-disc 1995 attempt was admirable and worthy, but doomed by space limitations. With a bit more room to move, Legacy's roomier two-disc collection is about close as anyone could hope to come. We get the full view of the great singer/songwriter's artistic journey. "Hello Walls" and the evergreen "Crazy" hail from the days when Nelson was tooling around Nashville as a songwriter for hire but mystifyingly unable to connect as a solo artist. His transformation into a counterculture icon via the '70s "outlaw country" movement is marked by the likes of "Me and Paul" and "Bloody Mary Morning." His tremendous skill as in interpreter can be heard in such standards as "Blue Skies" and "Georgia on Mind," which helped make him a crossover success in the STARDUST era. Latter-day collaborations with everyone from Aerosmith ("One Time Too Many") to U2 ("Slow Dancing") show Willie's mercurial, eclectic nature. Add it all up and a portrait comes together of a man whose artistic vision has carried him across decades and stylistic shifts aplenty and seen him through in style.

"The Very Best of Willie Nelson" (03/02/1999) Country Nelson, Willie, Legacy RecordingsPersonnel includes: Willie Nelson, Leon Russell, Waylon Jennings, Dolly Parton, Tracy Nelson, Merle Haggard, Julio Iglesias. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Photographers: Ross Marino; Robert Alford; Chuck Pulin; John Reggero; Jon Sievert. Arranger: Willie Nelson. Willie Nelson is the man who, along with Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings, virtually defines the term of "Outlaw" in country music. An outlaw, in the country music sense of the word, is a maverick determine to go his own way, and in doing so, helps redefine country music itself. VERY BEST OF compiles many of the best and most well known of Nelson's recordings for Columbia in the 1970s and '80s. His craggy yet sweet, world-weary vocals have made hits (and standards) of "On The Road Again" and "Whiskey River," while his covers of "Georgia On My Mind" and "All Of Me" introduced contemporary listeners to the glory days of America's Tin Pan Alley. Nelson's style of country has always had more to do with the dusty, earthy sounds of Texas as opposed to the polish of Nashville. He's also always had a willingness to sing duets with singers, like Julio Iglesias, Tracy Nelson (no relation) and Leon Russell, not usually related to the country genre. This is not only THE VERY BEST of Willie Nelson--it's some of the best American music, period.

"Pancho & Lefty [Bonus Tracks]" (10/21/2003) Country Nelson, Willie, Legacy RecordingsPersonnel: Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson (vocals, guitar); Reggie Young, Johnny Christopher, Grady Martin, Chips Moman, Lewis Talley (guitar); Johnny Gimble (fiddle, mandolin); Mickey Raphael (harmonica); Don Markham (saxophone); Bobby Emmons, Bobby Wood (keyboards); Mike Leech (bass); Gene Crisman (drums). Producers: Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Chips Moman. Recorded at Pedernales Studio, Spicewood, Texas and Moman's Recording Studio, Nashville, Tennessee. Originally released on Epic (37958). Includes liner notes by Rick Kienzle. Personnel: Merle Haggard (guitar, background vocals); Johnny Christopher, Willie Nelson (guitar, background vocals); Chips Moman, Grady Martin, Lewis Talley, Reggie Young (guitar); Johnny Gimble (mandolin, fiddle); Mickey Raphael (harmonica); Don Markham (saxophone); Bobby Wood (keyboards, background vocals); Bobby Emmons (keyboards); Gene Chrisman (drums). Audio Mixer: David Swope. Recording information: Moman's Recording Studio, Nashville, TN; Pedernales Studio, Spicewood, TX. Photographers: Joe Bangay; Kenneth McGowan; Sandy Speiser; David Redfern; Bobby Wood. This duet between two of country music's biggest contrarians includes four Willie Nelson originals and one by his partner, Merle Haggard. But the most notable inclusion is Townes Van Zandt's title track, the story of two outlaws at the end of the line, which became the album's signature hit in 1983. In addition to their remarkable interpretations of the album's contemporary songs, Nelson and Haggard's weathered voices are ideally suited to their more vintage material, including California country music pioneer Stuart Hamblen's "My Mary," and two Texas Playboys covers, "Still Water Runs the Deepest" and "My Life's Been a Pleasure." The album's relaxed feel is enhanced by its being done at Nelson's own Pedernales studio outside Austin. The remastered, expanded edition of Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson's 1982 classic, Pancho & Lefty, was well worth the wait. First, there's the sound. In the title cut, there are voices and guitars listeners have never heard before either on LP or CD. There are stunning little surprises like a keyboard or a marimba in "My Mary," or the subtle organ shadings in "Reasons to Quit," or the extra reverb on Hag's electric on "No Reason to Quit." These might seem like audiophile nitpickings to some, but they actually change the way one hears this recording -- and it wears its legendary status very well indeed. The bonus tracks are winners, too. In those days country records only had ten songs on them because the labels didn't want to pay the publishing. "Half a Man" is a slow Nelson waltz written in his trademark style; this is an unissued version of the song minus Hag. It's full of slinky honky tonk pianos, a slowly walking bassline, and a gorgeous Mickey Raphael harmonica solo. "My Own Peculiar Way" is a familiar song to Nelson fans; he's played it in his live sets forever, as it dates from 1965. But this is a completely fleshed-out, reworked version with many surprises instrumentally and vocally. For the price tag, this is ultimately an unbeatable -- and necessary -- item for the country collection. ~ Thom Jurek

"Stars & Guitars" (11/05/2002) Country Nelson, Willie, Lost Highway RecordsPersonnel includes: Willie Nelson (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar); Dan Dugmore (acoustic & steel guitars); Jody Payne (guitar, background vocals); Bill Evans (saxophone); Bobbie Nelson, (piano); Jim Cox (keyboards); Glenn Worf (bass); Chad Cromwell (drums); Sheryl Crow, Toby Keith, Lee Ann Womack, Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, Ray Price, Hank Williams III, Keith Richards, Norah Jones, Aaron Neville, Brian McNight, Patty Griffin, Matchbox Twenty, Emmylou Harris, Ryan Adams, Family, Vince Gill. Personnel: Jody Payne (guitar, background vocals); Jackie King (guitar); Richard Bennett (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Dan Dugmore (acoustic guitar, steel guitar); Mickey Raphael (harmonica); Bill Evans (saxophone); Bobbie Nelson (piano); Jim Cox (keyboards); Chad Cromwell (drums); Paul English (snare drum); Billy Gene English (percussion); Robert Bailey, Jr. , Vicki Hampton, Kim Fleming (background vocals). Audio Mixer: Chuck Ainlay. Recording information: Ryman Auditorium, Nashville, TN (05/27/2002). Photographer: Rahav Segev. Considering STARS & GUITARS's pop idol-heavy list of guests, one might expect the album to be just a live retread of Willie Nelson's 2002 studio effort, THE GREAT DIVIDE. Fortunately, unlike that album, which attempted to fit the artist into the same pop box that helped Carlos Santana out of a career slump, this is ol' Willie's show through and through. As anyone who has seem him live knows, Nelson's onstage personality is such a powerful force of nature, no one can hope to tame it. STARS AND GUITARS shows, once again, that though Willie Nelson is capable of playing any type of music he chooses, his musical personality is so strong that most guest artists can only hobble along behind him, thanking their lucky stars for the opportunity. Notable exceptions are Willie's contemporaries Ray Price and Aaron Neville, both of whom make the reasons for their legendary status abundantly clear. Overall, the album has the relaxed feel of a jam session (as if Willie could do it any other way). Though it may not be an essential addition to Nelson's catalog, STARS & GUITARS is an interesting curio that shows how different artists deal with the enigma that is Willie Nelson.

"Gospel Favorites" (09/13/1994) Country Nelson, Willie, Universal Special ProductsPersonnel: Willie Nelson (vocals, guitar). Those whose knowledge of country music history begins with Travis Tritt (or even Hank Williams, Jr.) probably have a hard time understanding what "outlaw country" meant in the late-'60s/early-'70s. Willie Nelson, along with people like Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson pioneered the movement, offering a gritty, rootsy, long-haired, rock-informed alternative to the Billy Sherrill-produced, strings-and-choir-laden Nashville pap that was being pumped out to the country audience. Nelson had already been kicking around for quite a while, penning hits for others (most notably Patsy Cline's "Crazy" and Faron Young's "Hello Walls"), but unable to make a mark as a solo artist. Eventually, he decided to see what would happen if he let his hair down (both figuratively and literally) to appeal to the younger generation. On milestone albums like PHASES AND STAGES and RED HEADED STRANGER, his approach defined "progressive country," retaining a raw, authentic sound without adhering to Nashville strictures. By the '70s, he had become a unique stylist who owed little to any one genre. His jazzy nylon-string guitar and relaxed croon proved infinitely adaptable. He tackled standards to fine effect on STARDUST and SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW. By the '80s, he was a pop icon on a par with Sinatra or Streisand, cutting duets with decidedly non-country artists like Julio Iglesias, as well as collaborating with Kristofferson, Jennings and Johnny Cash in the country supergroup the Highwaymen.

"Willie Nelson and Friends: Live and Kickin'" (06/24/2003) Country Nelson, Willie, Lost Highway RecordsPersonnel: Willie Nelson (vocals, guitar); Ray Charles, Kenny Chesney, Eric Clapton, Elvis Costello, Norah Jones, Toby Keith, Diana Krall, Lyle Lovett, Shelby Lynne, John Mellencamp, Ray Price, Leon Russell, Paul Simon, Shania Twain, Steven Tyler, ZZ Top (vocals); Biff Watson (acoustic & electric guitars); Brent Mason (electric guitar); Wyclef Jean, Andy York (guitar); Dan Dugmore (steel guitar); Miriam Sturn (violin); Stuart Duncan (fiddle); Mickey Raphael (harmonica); John Hobbsm, Matt Rollings, Robert Aaron (keyboards); Michael Rhodes, Jerry Duplessif (bass); Kenny Aronoff, Donald Guillaume, Dane Clark (drums); Shannon Forrest (percussion); Julia Waters, Maxine Waters, Corky Churke (background vocals). "Wurlitzer Prize" was nominated for Best Country Collaboration With Vocals. "Beer For My Horses" was nominated for Best Country Collaboration With Vocals and for Best Country Song. Personnel: Willie Nelson (vocals, guitar); Wyclef Jean (vocals, guitar); Diana Krall, Eric Clapton, John Mellencamp, Kenny Chesney, Leon Russell, Norah Jones, Paul Simon, Ray Price, Shania Twain, Shelby Lynne, Steven Tyler, Toby Keith, ZZ Top, Elvis Costello (vocals); Andy York (guitar); Biff Watson (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Brent Mason (electric guitar); Dan Dugmore (steel guitar); Miriam Sturm (violin); Stuart Duncan (fiddle); Mickey Raphael (harmonica); John Hobbs, Matt Rollings, Robert Aaron (keyboards); Donald Guillaume, Kenny Aronoff, Dane Clark (drums); Shannon Forrest (percussion); Cory Churko, Julia Waters, Maxine Willard Waters (background vocals). Audio Mixers: Julian King; Mike Wanchic; Paul Mahern; Thom Cadley. Recording information: The Beacon Theatre, New York, NY (04/09/2003). Photographer: Kevin Mazur. For his 70th birthday gala, Willie Nelson decided to celebrate by inviting a cast of musical stars to join him in duets on a televised concert. In keeping with Willie's eclecticism, only a few of the famous participants (Shania Twain,Toby Keith, old pal Ray Price) are country artists. How much is added to Nelson's classic "Crazy" by guests Diana Krall and Elvis Costello (hot celeb couple of the moment) is an open question; what's really important is the well deserved recognition Nelson receives from the musical world's biggest names. If you're a hardcore Willie fan, you've probably already got a couple of earlier live versions of, for example, "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain," but part of LIVE AND KICKIN's purpose is to expose fans of Nelson's duet partners to the magic they've been missing out on for many decades.

"Teatro" (09/01/1998) Country Nelson, Willie, IslandPersonnel: Willie Nelson (vocals, acoustic guitar); Emmylou Harris (vocals); Tony Mangurian (guitar, drums, percussion); Daniel Lanois (electric guitar, mandolin, omnichord, bass); Brian Griffiths (guitar, slide guitar, mandolin); Bobbie Nelson (strings, piano, Wurlitzer piano, organ); Micky Raphael (harmonica, bass harmonica); Brad Mehldau (piano, Hammond Organ, vibraphone); Malcolm Burn (organ); Tony Hall (bass); Victor Indrizzo (drums, percussion); Willie Green (drums); Cyril Neville (congas). All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. TEATRO was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Long Form Music Video. Personnel: Willie Nelson (vocals, acoustic guitar); Emmylou Harris (vocals, background vocals); Brian Griffiths (guitar, slide guitar, mandolin); Daniel Lanois (mandolin, omnichord); Bobbie Nelson (strings, organ, Wurlitzer organ); Mickey Raphael (harmonica); Brad Mehldau (piano, vibraphone); Malcolm Burn (organ); Tony Mangurian, Victor Indrizzo (drums, percussion); Willie Green (drums); Cyril Neville (congas). Audio Mixer: Mark Howard. Recording information: Teatro. Editor: Tony Mangurian. Photographers: Daniel Lanois; Rocky Schenck. Unknown Contributor Role: Emmylou Harris. After working his atmospheric magic on Bob Dylan (TIME OUT OF MIND) and Emmylou Harris (WRECKING BALL), producer Daniel Lanois takes on another American original: Willie Nelson. The result is an album that's at once timeless and up-to-the minute. Lanois brings Willie's instantly recognizable voice front and center, but underscores his acoustic guitar picking with complex percussion and drums, as well as organ and harmonica. The Lanois-written "The Maker" is the most fleshed-out instrumentally, and sounds like an outtake from Harris' WRECKING BALL. Harris herself appears on 11 of the 14 songs, handling the difficult task of singing harmony with Willie's distinctive around-the-beat style phrasing. Half the songs were written by Willie in the sixties, when his career was on the rise but his personal life was in ruins. The material is almost uniformly despairing, with titles like "I've Just Destroyed The World" and "Darkness on the Face of the Earth." The newer songs, like "Everywhere I Go," have a Spanish lilt, perhaps reflecting the fact that the album was recorded in a converted California theater that once specialized in Mexican movies. While TEATRO may be case of teaching an old dog new tricks, Willie's certainly an apt pupil.

"16 Biggest Hits: Waylon Jennings & Willie Nelson" (02/21/2006) Country Jennings, Waylon, Legacy RecordingsPersonnel: Waylon Jennings (vocals, guitar); Willie Nelson (vocals, guitar). RLG/Legacy's 2006 release 16 Biggest Hits is a compilation of the biggest hits from the biggest duo in outlaw country, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson. Not surprisingly, this disc draws heavily on their blockbuster 1978 record Waylon & Willie, containing seven of its 11 tracks, adding two cuts from their 1982 sequel WWII along with scattered songs from their individual solo albums cut between 1977 and 1991, as well as their version of Steve Earle's "Nowhere Road" from the 1996 20th Anniversary Edition of Wanted! The Outlaws. While this is not by any means a complete chronicle of duets by Waylon and Willie, it is an excellent collection of their very best work as a duo (even with the absence of "The Wurlitzer Prize (I Don't Want to Get Over You)" which, admittedly, was more of a Waylon solo track), and is, track-for-track, a better listen than either of the official Waylon and Willie albums. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"Honeysuckle Rose [Remaster]" (06/24/2003) Country Original Soundtrack, Legacy RecordingsComposed by Willie Nelson. Originally released as Columbia (36752). Includes liner notes by Jonny Whiteside. The soundtrack to Honeysuckle Rose is an anomaly in the genre. It is really a collection of songs by Willie Nelson and his Family band as well as a host of friends like Jody Payne, Johnny Gimble, Amy Irving, Hank Cochran, Jeannie Seely, Kenneth Threadgill, Dyan Cannon, and Emmylou Harris, all of it set in a concert-like atmosphere and performed live in front of an audience. Now it's true that Nelson is the hero of the movie, but the movie hardly matters when it comes to the soundtrack because it stands so well as a document on its own. Cochran's performances are as inspiring as anything he ever did in his life. Nelson's readings of his own tunes like "Bloody Mary Morning," "On the Road Again," "Pick Up the Tempo," "Heaven or Hell," and others are solid, inspired, and rollicking. His versions of tunes written by Kris Kristofferson ("Loving Her Was Easier Than Anything I'll Ever Do Again"), Rodney Crowell ("Angel Eyes"), and Lee Clayton ("If You Could Touch Her at All") blow away the studio versions. And the duets with Cannon, Harris, and Irving are moving and direct. The sound is much improved on this remastered version with a real bass presence and far less crowd noise during the performances. ~ Thom Jurek

"Spirit" (06/26/1996) Country Nelson, Willie, IslandPersonnel: Willie Nelson (vocals, guitar); Jody Payne (guitar, background vocals); Johnny Gimble (fiddle); Bobbie Nelson (piano). Recorded at Pedernales Recording, Austin, Texas. Personnel: Willie Nelson (vocals, guitar); Johnny Gimble (fiddle); Bobbie Nelson (piano). Audio Mixer: Joe Gracey. Recording information: Pedernales Recording, Austin, TX (11/04/1995). Illustrator: Dave Zettner. Photographer: Chris Buck. On his debut for Island Records, Willie Nelson returns to the song-cycle concept that served him well two decades earlier on RED HEADED STRANGER and PHASES AND STAGES. At age 63, Nelson uses the stripped-down, drumless SPIRIT to look back at his relationships with God and with women. "Matador," a beautiful, flamenco-flavored instrumental, begins and ends the record. In between, the Red Headed Stranger reminisces about all the good things the Creator has done ("I Thought About You, Lord"), and makes his peace in a direct conversation ("Too Sick To Pray"). Nelson's limber acoustic guitar resonates throughout, while sister Bobbie's distinctive piano playing is at the center of tales of lost love ("She Is Gone," "I'm Waiting Forever"). And Bobbie rambles alongside the joyous noise of long-time Nelson fiddler Johnny Gimble in another instrumental, "Spirit Of E9," a Tex-Mex-flavored waltz.
