The F505 is a camera which combines elements from many different digicam designs to present us with what is undoubtedly Sony's best digital camera to date. Gone are the days of no-name lenses, a common gripe against Sony digital cameras was the quality of the lens systems used, often resulting in dull, flat or fuzzy images and lots of chromatic aberrations. Not on the F505, which utilizes very good quality five times (equiv. 35mm - 190mm) Carl Zeiss lens with an excellent aperture of F2.8 (35mm) - F3.3 (190mm). And it shows, the lens barrel completely dominates the design of this digicam, it's also the heaviest part of the camera. But you really won't mind that, after all it's one, if not the most important component in a digicam.

The Sony DSC-S50 offers many of the same features of Sony's earlier digicams but in a much more compact and portable form factor. It's small enough to fit into a large coat pocket or purse but still hefty enough to provide a nice firm hand grip on the right side. The most interesting design element on the camera is the rotating LCD panel that lifts up off of the back panel and upwards to 180 degrees. Once detached from the back panel, the LCD monitor can also swivel around on its neck about 270 degrees. This is very useful when composing a self-portrait and the ability to lift up the LCD panel also helps in various other shooting situations. When not in use, the screen can be turned to face into the camera body and latched in place, protecting it from scratches when the camera is slipped into a pocket or purse. Another design feature was the combination of the battery compartment and MemoryStick slot on the hand grip side of the camera. This makes battery changes while mounted to a tripod a snap.
