Although digital video recording is still a little rough around the edges, it offers some distinct advantages over VHS recording, like the abilities to watch and record different programs simultaneously and to create searchable indices of your favorite programs. The PV-HS1000 is Panasonic's first entry into the PVR (personal video recorder) realm. Its 20-gigabyte hard drive allows for 20 hours of video recording at the highest compression (lowest quality) and for 6.5 hours of recording at the highest quality. An on-screen menu and programming guide are updated nightly by telephone (the unit automatically calls for updates.) The programming guide can be configured to record your favorite programs or to record programs which it "thinks" you might like based on your past viewing and keywords. A PVR lets you rewind live TV broadcasts because it's constantly recording a buffer of the program. This unit also has a 30-second skip button for zipping through commercials in recorded programs and a 7-second repeat button for instant replays. If you've got an extra $100 you may as well go for a bigger hard drive. The step-up PV-HS2000 has a 30-GB hard drive. Both models are packaged with universal remote controls. -- EM

The TiVo HDR312 personal TV receiver, which is made by Philips, is part of the emerging new category of tapeless video recorders or PVRs (personal video recorders). At the heart of TiVo is a huge hard drive that stores and plays back several hours of video -- just how many hours depends on what level of recording quality you choose. The better the quality, the less video you can store.TiVo, like its competitor Replay, has two exciting features which make it one of the most compelling new products of the year. First, you can pause live TV. Just click a button on the remote, the picture freezes, and you can take a bathroom or snack break. When you click the pause button a second time, the show you were watching begins playing from where you stopped it. You then have the choice to continue watching the show from that point or fast forward and catch up to the action in real time. Clicking another button allows you to create your own instant replays. What also makes TiVo exciting is how easy it isto program it to record shows and other programming. TiVo's interface is built around an on-screen program guide that shows you what programs are available for the next 13 days (the program guide is updated through the unit's built-in modem late at nightvia a phone line). Just scroll through the guide and check off what programs you want TiVo to record and it will do it automatically. You can even have it record your favorite show every week by selecting the "season pass" option. As the hard drive fills up, newer recordings sweep out old programming, though you can opt to have certain recordings permanently saved. The HDR312 comes with a 27.2GB drive, which equates to 10-30 hours of recording time, depending on the quality setting. Replay's mid-levelmodel, the Replay 2003 ($899 list), offers less recording capacity (only up to about 14 hours), but has more inputs, including a FireWire connection for potentially connecting FireWire-enabled devices, such as digital video (DV) camcorders.Although TiVo charges a subscription fee for its service ($9.95 a month), you can opt for the lifetime subscription fee of $199. That means TiVo's HDR312 will run you a total of $1199.TiVo also makes a unit with less storage capacity, the HDR112. It has a 13.6GB hard-drive and can store up to 14 hours of video at the lowest quality setting.
