You then have the choice to continue watching the show from that point or fast forward and catch up to the action in real time. Clicking another button allows you to create your own instant replays.What also makes TiVo exciting is how easy it isto program it to record shows and other programming. TiVo's interface is built around an on-screen program guide that shows you what programs are available for the next 13 days (the program guide is updated through the unit's built-in modem late at nightvia a phone line). Just scroll through the guide and check off what programs you want TiVo to record and it will do it automatically. You can even have it record your favorite show every week by selecting the "season pass" option. As the hard drive fills up, newer recordings sweep out old programming, though you can opt to have certain recordings permanently saved.The HDR312 comes with a 27.2GB drive, which equates to 10-30 hours of recording time, depending on the quality setting. Replay's mid-levelmodel, the Replay 2003 ($899 list), offers less recording capacity (only up to about 14 hours), but has more inputs, including a FireWire connection for potentially connecting FireWire-enabled devices, such as digital video (DV) camcorders.Although TiVo charges a subscription fee for its service ($9.95 a month), you can opt for the lifetime subscription fee of $199. That means TiVo's HDR312 will run you a total of $1199.TiVo also makes a unit with less storage capacity, the HDR112. It has a 13.6GB hard-drive and can store up to 14 hours of video at the lowest quality setting.
